  • This study examined the physical and chemical properties of soil in Jang-San wetland in Busan Metropolitan City. The wetland covers wide and flat area comparing to its outside. The samples of the wetland soil were collected and analyzed in order to identify the profiles and chemical properties. According to the analyses of soil moisture and particle size distribution, the wetland soil mostly belongs to sandy loam with the soil moistures of 14.9-153.2%. The soil profiles are configured with O, A, B, and C horizons from the land surface. The organic matter content (2.38-16.7%) at most sampling locations decreases downwardly with the highest at 0-20 cm depth. The organic matter content has a good positive relationship with soil moisture content. According to X-ray diffraction analysis, the wetland soils contain quartz and feldspar (the main components of rhyolite porphyry) as well as montmorillonite, gibbsite, and kaolinite (the weathered products of feldspar). The wetland soil displays the highest iron concentration (average 22,052 mg/kg), indicating oxidation of iron. High concentrations of potassium (average 17,822 mg/kg) and sodium (average 5,394 mg/kg) originate from the weathering of feldspar. Among anions, sulfate concentration is highest with average 9.21 mg/kg that may originate from sulfate minerals and atmosphere.

  • The present study was made based on the zero extension line theory and the well-known Mononobe-Okabe's to determine the dynamic earth pressures acting on the retaining walls. The zero extension line theory, which was proposed by Roscoe et al., assumes the coincidence between the loci of failure and the zero extension lines in soil mass. ln order to compute the dynamic earth pressure developed by an earthquake, it was assumed that for the vertical retaining walls with no surcharge, the backfill materials are dense and cohesionless sandy soils, there are no changes in soil parameters during earthquake, and the horizontal earthquake intensity is considered. The effects of horizontal earthquake intensity, internal friction angle of soil, wall friction angle and dilation angle, on the earth pressure coefficients were analysed. Final1y, the presented theories were successfully compared with the Mononobe-Okabe's as well.

  • High mortality and slow growth of seedling generally occurred in tray due to cold, foggy weather and severe seedling blight. Mechanical transplanting is hampered, farmers having economic loss. A sustainable method for raising mat type seedling is necessary. Experiments were conducted on disease control and seedling growth in dry seasons. Fungicides treated/untreated seeds were sown 120-130g in each tray containing pulverized fine grain loam/sandy loam soils. Seed covered with a thin layer of soil and irrigated. It was polythene covered (PC) for 72h and then every night along with 2/3 sprinkler irrigation (SI) per day. Untreated seedlings infected 53-93%. Pyraclostrobin, Azoxystrobin and Azoxystrobin+Difeconazole treated seeds/sprayed (72h) seedlings had no disease. Seedling height was 11.7-13.2 cm with compact and thick root mat at 25 days. Seeds treated at 0.2-0.3% (18-20h) showed no disease but severely in untreated seeds in all locations. Seedling height (13.8 cm), leaf age (3.7) and root number (8.5) were better when NPK were applied at 3-4-3 g/tray. Spraying of urea (1%) in addition with MOP, theovit and $ZnSo_4$ at 0.6-0.6-0.2% on 7 and $15^{th}$ days was also effective. PC showed significant growth (29.1-34.5%). Root mat was not good in flooded irrigation (FI). Disease was higher in SI (66.7-97.3%) than FI (0.7-3.7%) in untreated seeds regardless of polythene use. The protocol would be effective for raising mat type seedling in cold environment.

  • A direct shear test is classified roughly by one side simple shear test of confining horizontal displacement type and torsional shear test of non-confining one. Direct shear test that has been widely used so far has some problems with test apparatus, testing and the analysis, and in particular that its strength value is everestimated in sandy soils. Also, progressive failure of shearing process happens from shear apparatus restriction and because the shear strain and shear stress are erratic in specimen, we can not define the shear strain value. In the meantime, a simple shear test having advantage of direct shear test is an ideal test method that can get stress-strain relation on shear because it can deliver constant shearing deformation to specimen. However, simple shear test cannot be used practically, because its structure makes tester manufacturing difficult. This paper described a on outline of test apparatus, improvement of test method, and constant pressure test results based on the obtained from improved direct shear apparatus and the standardization of JGS soil testing method.

  • Cracks in soil provide significant preferential pathways for contaminant transport and rainfall infiltration. Water exchange between the soil matrix and crack is crucial to characterize the preferential flow, which is often quantitatively described by a water exchange ratio. The water exchange ratio is defined as the amount of water flowing from the crack into the clay matrix per unit time. Most of the previous studies on the water exchange ratio mainly focused on cracked sandy soils. The water exchange between cracks and clay matrix were rarely studied mainly due to two reasons: (1) Cracks open upon drying and close upon wetting. The deformable cracks lead to a dynamic change in the water exchange ratio. (2) The aperture of desiccation crack in clay is narrow (generally 0.5 mm to 5 mm) which is difficult to model in experiments. This study will investigate the water exchange between a deformable crack and the clay matrix using a newly developed experimental apparatus. An artificial crack with small aperture was first fabricated in clay without disturbing the clay matrix. Water content sensors and suction sensors were instrumented at different places of the cracked clay to monitor the water content and suction changes. Results showed that the water exchange ratio was relatively large at the initial stage and decreased with the increasing water content in clay matrix. The water exchange ratio increased with increasing crack apertures and approached the largest value when the clay was compacted at the water content to the optimal water content. The effective hydraulic conductivity of the crack-clay matrix interface was about one order of magnitude larger than that of saturated soil matrix.

  • Series system reliability analysis of non-reactive contaminant transport is performed in a two dimensional horizontal domain with two different limit state functions: (1) concentration threshold and (2) exposure time threshold. The transient source transport model is combined with the system reliability model to evaluate the probability that a specified maximum concentration at a node of interest would be exceeded or that a moderate concentration would exceed some exposure limit over a given period of time. The results give probabilities of exceedence greater than probability of each component and they tend to be dominanted by the component with larger probability. Transverse dispersivity turns out to be an important parameter in addition to hydraulic conductivity in a two-dimensional contaminant transport model with transient source. System sensitivity is found to reflect the corresponding sensitivity of both components, with the component with larger probability having a greater influence.

  • A field study was conducted to investigate and ascertain the effects of boron and molybdenum with recommended N P K S Zn fertilizers (RFD) for sustained sugarcane yield in the sandy acidic soil in Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain of Bangladesh. Results revealed that the treatment $T_7$ having recommended fertilizers of N 120, P 35, K 100, S 25 and Zn 2kg $ha^{-1}$ + B 2kg $ha^{-1}$ + Mo 2 kg $ha^{-1}$ produced significantly higher number of millable cane (126.96\times10^3\;ha^{-1})$ except in $T_9$ with RFD + B 2 kg $ha^{-1}$ + Mo 4kg $ha^{-1}$, and higher cane yield (92.83 Mg $ha^{-1}$) among all except in $T_3$ with RFD + B2 kg $ha^{-1}$, $T_5$ with RFD + Mo 2kg $ha^{-1}$ and $T_9$ where the effects were statistically identical. The increase in cane yield by $T_7$ was $164.6\%$ over control. The treatment $T_7$ having RFD + B 2kg $ha^{-1}$ + Mo 2kg $ha^{-1}$ further gave the highest additional net economic benefit of Taka 16, 500.00 for added Band Mo at 2kg $ha^{-1}$ among all the treatments in the study.

  • This experiment was conducted on relatively acid sandy loam soil at Choong-ju campus, Kon-kuk University aimed at clarifying the influence of urea and ammonium nitrate on the effect of potassium to Chinese cabbage in soils either limed or unlimed with calcium silicate. The results are summarized as follows: a. Calcium silicate application enhanced cabbage growth and under this condition, the difference in effect of urea and ammonium nitrate can hardly be observed. b. Without calcium silicate application, the response of Chinese cabbage to ammonium nitrate was more distinctive than that to urea. This was partially attributable to the greater use of soil born potassium at ammonium nitrate treatment. c. Added potassium was not only affective in increasing cabbage yield but also contributed in improving quality of cabbage by producing greater edible portion of the cabbage. Such K effect was particularly pronounced on the acid soil where calcium silicate application was neglected. d. Potassium was easily translocated from outer leaves to inner leaves and thus, the concentration of K content in outer leaves played as a limiting factor of cabbage yield. Less than 20 me/100gr of K content in harvested dried outer leaves resulted in a linear reduction of cabbage yield.

  • Objectives: This study examines the relationships between indoor radon concentrations and distribution from soil geological mapping in the Hwacheon and Jangsu areas. Methods: GIS and a pivot table were used for inquiries about indoor radon contents, soil characteristics, and geological differences. Results: The Hwacheon area was characterized by the presence of normal and reverse faults as a passage of runoff for radon, sufficient occurrences of minerals containing uranium within granite as a radon source, a high concentration of radon within the granite area and clear differences of radon concentrations between granitic and metamorphic areas. The Jangsu area was characterized by the presence of normal faults, wide distributions of alluvium, and ambiguities on radon concentrations indoors among areas of geological differences. Considering the granite area and alluvium surrounded with granite areas, the characteristics of radon concentrations within soils and indoors in the Jangsu area are similar to those of the Hwacheon area. High concentrations are found with entisol and inceptisol in the Hawcheon area, but with entisol, inceptisol, and ultisol in the Jangsu area. High radon concentrations are found in sandy loam and/or loam. High concentrations are found in recently constructed or brick buildings, but low concentrations in traditional or prefabricated houses showing a high possibility of outward flow. Conclusions: The overall results suggest that radon concentrations in the Hwacheon and Jangsu area are dominantly influenced by geological characteristics with additional artificial influences.
