The interspecific hybrid of Salix caprea and Salix gracilistyla has never been identified or studied in Korea. Accordingly, this study investigated the flower morphological characteristics of the interspecific hybrid between S. caprea and S. gracilistyla and compared the interspecific hybrid with S. caprea and S. gracilistyla, respectively. The female flowers were investigated for 12 characteristics and the male flowers were investigated for nine. For the female flowers, those of the hybrids were larger than those of S. caprea and S. gracilistyla in terms of catkin length (CL), bract length (BL), and bract width (BW). The hybrids are intermediates between S. caprea and S. gracilistyla in terms of ovary length, width, and stipitate length as well as gland length (GL). For the male flowers, those of the hybrids were bigger than those of S. caprea and S. gracilistyla in terms of CL, BL, and BW. The hybrids are intermediates between S. caprea and S. gracilistyla in terms of catkin width and stamen length (SL). A principal component analysis (PCA) of the female data showed that the first principal component (PC) explained 57.5% of the total variation. The first PC highly correlated the ovary stipitate and pistil style lengths. The analysis was divided into three groups of S. caprea, S. gracilistyla, and the hybrid by the first PC. The results of a PCA of the male data showed that the first PC explained 35.7% of the total variation. The first PC highly correlated with the adelphous SL and was divided into three groups of S. caprea, S. gracilistyla, and the hybrid. The results of the discriminant analysis showed that S. caprea, S. gracilistyla, and the hybrid were distinguishable by flower morphological characteristics. Therefore, the hybrid was distinctly separated from S. caprea and S. gracilistyla by flower characteristics.
This study was carried out to survey the growth and the photosynthesis of Salix gracilistyla, the reduction rate of nitrogen and phosphoric acid by the plant grown in waterway soil. The results were summarized as follows; I. The contents of nitrogen and phosphoric acid at waterway soils of Mangyeong river showed the highest level in the around Samrye railway bridge where was located in the downstream and livestock complex. 2. The Salix gracilistyla which grown in waterway soil showed that the growth of stem length and diameter were 170~215% and 42.3~79.3%, respectively. In addition the growth rate of Salix gracilistyla was increased with increasing nitrogen concentrations in waterway soils. 3. The rate of photosynthesis was high in waterway soil contained high nitrogen and it appeared the highest in August. 4. The nitrogen and phosphoric acid by Salix gracilistyla grown in waterway soil were removed about 14~15% and 9~11 %, respectively. The Salix gracilistyla was effective removing nitrogen more than phosphoric acid.

Salix gracilistyla has a characteristic of fast growth especially in the river side or infertile soil, showing a lot of lateral branches and a strong root system among the Salix. spp. On the basis of results observed, we provide several growth characteristics of S. gracilistyla among some selected provenances. In two-year results, root collar diameter ranged from 33.5 mm to 56.7 mm. Taeback showed the lowest value, and Jeongseon and Hoengseong were higher than the other areas in the traits above. Height growth was the lowest in Samcheok and the highest in Wonju. To examine growth and development of lateral branches is important because S. gracilistyla has a lot of lateral branches which account for high biomass production. Length of lateral branch showed high variation, in which the highest number was observed in Yeongwol and the lowest in Samcheok. Many lateral branches were shown in Wonju. Preliminary study on biomass resources evaluation, we analyzed correlation between volume and length, and volume and root diameter. High correlation was observed between root diameter and plant volume. And we compared the observed volume with the caculated volume by regression formula. To evaluate Salix species as biomass resources, it is needed to survey growth characteristics continuously and adopt selection of individuals or families of high biomass and caloric values by reliable data. In addition, Salix spp. can be also applicable to selection breeding regime because of feasible propagation and fast growth.
We analyzed the vegetation environment at the stream section of habitat in which Cottus koreanus lives. The plant communities were classified into Fraxinus rhynchophylla community, Acer ginnala-Salix koreensis community, Phragmites japonica-Salix gracilistyla community, Salix gracilistyla community, Phragmites japonica community, Robinia pseudo-acacia community, and Oenanthe javanica-Persicaria thunbergii community. The frequency of Phragmites japonica-Salix gracilistyla community was the most. And also the frequencies of Fraxinus rhynchophylla community and Salix gracilistyla community were high. In stream bank zone and terrace zone, the typically represented vegetation was the Fraxinus rhynchophylla community and Acer ginnala-Salix koreensis community and Phragmites japonica-Salix gracilistyla community, respectively. The rNCD of the top-priority plants applied to restoration of the vegetation in stream bank zone came out by the order of Ulmus davidiana var. japonica, Salix koreensis, Acer ginnala, Salix gracilistyla, and Fraxinus rhynchophylla. The rNCD in terrace zone was arranged by the order of Salix gracilistyla, Phragmites japonica, and Artemisia princeps. The spatial distribution of vegetation was the most greatly influenced by cross-sectional position of the surveyed stream, and this aspect is believed to be due to the habitat's physical stability. Species diversity also obviously makes a great difference depending on their surrounding physical stability.

This study was carried out to verify the distribution patterns of Salix gracilistyla and Phragmites japonica communities known as obligatory riparian species according to physical factors such as micro-landforms, substrates, etc., at Soo-ip stream corridor. Firstly four vegetation types - Salix gracilistyla dominant type, Phragmites japonica dominant type, mixed type of two species, and mixed type of two species to other species, were classified by cluster analysis based on UPGMA-Euclidean distance. Also these vegetation types showed many different distribution patterns in response to the longitudinal and lateral view along the stream corridor and substrate composition. Salix gracilistyla was major component of dominant vegetation types developed at attack point of bending reach and on substrates composed of rock fragments, but contrastly Phragmites japonica was most important component of dominant vegetation types at point bar of bending reach and floodplain, and on substrates composed of soil materials. Secondly the species and environment biplot form CCA strongly supported the vegetation types divided by classification. Namely Salix gracilistyla was closely correlated with rock fragments and steep slope, which is resistant to physical action even though located near running water. But Phragmites japonica showed a high correlation with soil particles sedimented at floodplain by divergent flow.

Salix gracilistyla is widely distributed along riversides in Korea and very good for biomass production by SRC because of its excellent germination ability, but it is necessary to measure drying tolerance for cultivation. The drought tolerance of S. gracilistyla was tested using cuttings, and growth and physiological analysis were performed after irrigation was stopped. The growth inhibition of S. gracilistyla was observed from the day irrigation was stopped, and the soil moisture content decreased to less than 10% on the 25th day after irrigation was stopped. Over 50% of the seedlings turned brown 25 days after watering was stopped. The chlorophyll content of S. gracilistyla decreased dramatically after 25 days of stopping of irrigation. RWC values were unchanged until day 12 after irrigation was stopped but decreased rapidly until day 21, but there was a slightly decreasing trend after that. RWL levels increased slightly during irrigation stops. The proline content of plants subjected to drought stress was 0.91-2.63 mg/0.05 g, 2.75 times higher than that of the control treatment. The sugar content of the drought stress treatment group was 29.77 to 350.66 mg/0.05 g, which increased 12.24 times that of the control treatment. As a result of this study, S. gracilistyla was found to have a drought tolerance almost comparable to that of evergreen broad-leaved trees growing on the land. This study is expected to contribute to the resource utilization S. gracilistyla, a native willow tree of Korea, and the mass production of biomass by SRC.
Removal efficiency and potential of N and P by Salix gracilistyla Miq. are determined in continuous flow tanks as a function of hydraulic retention time (HRT, days) and nutrient concentration (NC). Results show that the removal efficiency was longer HRT and lower nutrient solution. And also removal potential was higher at shorter HRT and higher nutrient concentration, and the regression equations were estimated. Mean above ground biomass of Salix gracilistyla Miq. in the middle reaches of Suip stream was 4880.81 g/$m^2$, and estimated removal by this vegetation from biomass and estimated equation above were 0.49~15.49 NH$_4$-N kg/day, 5.83~405.39 NO$_3$-N kg/day, 7.57~23.22 PO$_4$-P kg/day in Suip stream, respectively when HRT was 0.59~5.21, inflow concentration was 0.05~0.4, mg/L NH$_4$-N, 1.42~11.36 mg/L NO$_3$-N, 0.1~0.27 mg/L PO$_4$-P. According to this study, it is concluded that Salix gracilistyla Miq. are contribute by their high biomass and for water quality improvement of stream through nutrient removal potential.

This study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant and whitening activities of Salix gracilistyla extracts. The total polyphenol contents of the extracts were 142.60-151.95 mg GAE/g and total flavonoid contents were 83.43-92.60 mg CE/g. In 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, the 30% methanol extract showed the highest antioxidant activity ($IC_{50}$; $19.68{\mu}g/mL$). Tyrosinase inhibitory activity was similar in all four solvent extracts, and the highest inhibitory activity (35.18%) was obtained at a concentration of $200{\mu}g/mL$ of 30% ethanol extract. In addition, methanol extracts did not affect cell viability at all treatment concentrations and were found to significantly reduce the melanin content of B16F10 cells. As a result, it is considered that Salix gracilistyla extracts can be used as an effective cosmetic ingredient having antioxidant and whitening activity.
This study was carried out to investigate the feasibility of Salix gracilistyla production for cosmetic use through mycelial fermentation. The efficacy of this method was confirmed by fermentation using the mycelia of Ganoderma lucidum (a representative medicinal mushroom). Total polyphenol and flavonoid content and DPPH radical scavenging activity of S. gracilistyla extract (SGE) were found to be higher than those of G. lucidum fermented S. gracilistyla extract (GLSGE). GLSGE had relatively lower collagenase activity than SGE. However, GLSGE increased HDFn cell viability more potently than SGE, and increased the biosynthesis of type I procollagen. Thus, GLSGE could be used as an anti-aging cosmetic active ingredient. These results indicate that extract fermentation using G. lucidum mycelia can effectively enhance some beneficial effects of functional materials.

This study was carried out to select the useful plants for the revegetation of flooded slopes in dams, lakes and streams. In this study, four woody plants were investigated for their survival and growth in nursery with various flooding conditions. The results are as follows: Salix gracilistyla showed a very high survival rate and grew continuously under the complete flooding condition. Especially, it grew better under partly flooding condition than non-flooding condition. Amorpha fruticosa showed growth disorder when the flooding period was over 30 days, but the part of stem which was flooded in water adapted itself by branching the adventitious roots. Wisteria floribunda showed respectively high flooding tolerance until 30 days. Lespedeza bicolor were very weak in excessive moisture and flooding conditions. This study confirmed Salix gracilistyla, Amorpha fruticosa and Wisteria floribunda are efficient woody plants for covering the flooded slopes of dam and various impoundment sites.
