Objectives : The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between salivary flow, palate recognition threshold, DMFT index and oral health influence point (OHIP-14) of the adults over 40 years old. Methods : Salivary flow and taste recognition threshold were measured in 220 adults over 40 years old from three dental clinics in Daegu from January 3 to February 4, 2012. A total of 208 questionnaires were analyzed. Results : The adults recognized the sour taste in low concentration level when the salivary flow was faster. DMFT index was low in those who recognized sweet and sour taste that affected OHIP-14. Conclusions : Tooth decaying food must be restricted because of its high acidity in the past despite the individuals' taste recognition threshold was neglected. Before the diet control, it is necessary to measure the taste threshold of the individuals. Training for improving salivary flow is very important to prevent dental caries and to preserve good taste.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of multibanded orthodontic appliances on dental caries activity. The subjects consisted of 50 males and females with multibanded orthodontic appliance and the same number of caries free group. The following conclusions were obtained, 1. There was significant difference between the experimental group and control group in the tests of Snyder colorimetric test, acid :buffering capacity and oral glucose clearance test (at $5\%$ level of significance). 2. There was no significant difference between the experimental group and control group in the tests of unstimulated salivary flow fate, stimulated salivary flow rate and salivary viscosity test (at $5\%$ level of significance). 3. Dental caries activity was higher in experimental group than in control group.
The present study aims to confirm the influence of a horse-riding lesson program (HRLP) on the stress level of horses and riders by respectively analyzing their salivary cortisol concentration. Twenty-four healthy horses and 23 riders participated in this study. The horses were randomly classified into two groups for the horse riding lesson program: Class 1 (for the beginner lesson) and Class 2 (for the intermediate lesson). The Class 1 group consisted of 12 horses and 12 riders, while the Class 2 group consisted of 12 horses and 11 riders. Salivettes cotton wool swabs were used for saliva collection and the saliva analyses were conducted using a two-way analysis of variance for repeated measures with SAS version 8. As for the results, the average salivary cortisol concentration of all horses before HRLP significantly increased compared to the baseline (p<0.001) while it decreased after the HRLP. The results of the salivary cortisol concentration of the riders were similar to the horses' results. However, there was no difference during the HRLP between Class 1 and Class 2 in the horse or rider groups. The results suggest that the HRLP did not influence the stress level of the horses or riders. Thus, this study provides the necessary information and guidelines for future studies on stress in horses during riding and gives insight into better horse welfare and management options.
This study was conducted to examine my hypothesis that how teacher's teaching style influences emotional and physiological states of students in the secondary school science classroom. Sixty healthy secondary school students were participated in this study and divided into two groups: manipulation and non-manipulation. Each group underwent different styles of teaching on the scientific hypothesis-generating of com starch experiment. Before and after the class, the strength of emotion was measured using adjective emoticon check lists and they extracted their saliva sample for salivary hormone analysis. Here are the results of this study. First, the intensity of positive emotions in the manipulation group was significantly stronger than the one in the non-manipulation group, whereas the intensity of negative emotions in the non-manipulation group was significantly stronger than the one in the manipulation group. Second, the cortisol level, an indicator of stress, was decreased in the manipulation group whereas it was increased in non-manipulation group. Third, the quality of scientific hypotheses which is generated by students during the class had no connection with types of instructions. Fourth, this study found significantly negative correlation between students' emotional intensity of interest and concentration changes of salivary cortisol. Therefore, the different teaching styles have influence upon students' attitude and interest in science.
We investigated the culture condition and effects of various growth factors on the culture of salivary gland acinar cells. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats (about 6 weeks old) were sacrificed and their submandibular, sublingual, and parotid glands were used as specimens. High oxygen level more than 90% and coating of Matrigel on culture dish were important factors to help increase the survival time of acinar cells, Proper concentration of enzymes such as collagenase and hyaluronidase during isolation steps was also important. Addition of various growth factors such as dexamethasone, insulin, transferrin, selenous acid, reduced glutathione, epidermal growth factor, isoproterenol, and putrescine in culture medium helped to increase lifetime of cultured salivary acinar cells.
Salivary testosterone levels in Korean adults were quantitatively measured for the first time by liquid chromatography-electrospray-tandem mass spectrometry (LC ESI MS/MS). Salivary testosterone was separated on a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) chromatogram within 7 min. The LC ESI MS/MS assay was validated over the linearity range of 0.01-2.00 ng/ml (r=0.99987) using testosterone-$d_3$ as an internal standard. The lower limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.01 ng/ml. The intra- and inter-assay precisions were 1.54% to 4.09% and 0.96% to 4.29%, respectively. The mean recovery was 93.32% (range 88.43-98.05%). The validated assay was then applied to measure the salivary testosterone levels of Korean adults. In men, the salivary testosterone level collected between 9:00-11:00 am was approximately 2.8 times higher than that in women (P < 0.0001). Salivary testosterone levels in both sexes negatively correlated with age. The present assay would also be useful in measuring salivary testosterone levels in clinical laboratories.
Purpose: Purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Mindfulness Meditation program on perceived stress, ways of coping, salivary cortisol level, and psychological stress response in patients with breast cancer. Methods: This was a quasiexperimental study with a non-equivalent control group pre-post test design. Participants in this study were 50 patients who had completed breast cancer treatment (experimental group, 25, control group, 25). The experimental group received the Mindfulness Meditation program for 3 hours/session/ week for 8 weeks. Data were analyzed using $X^2$-test and t-test for subject homogeneity verification, and ANCOVA to examine the hypotheses. Results: The experimental group had significantly lower scores for perceived stress, emotional focused coping, salivary cortisol level, and psychological stress response compared to the control group. However, no significant differences were found between two groups for the scores on problem focused stress coping. Conclusion: According to the results, the Mindfulness Meditation program was useful for decreasing perceived stress, emotional focused coping, salivary cortisol level, and psychological stress response. Therefore, this program is an effective nursing intervention to decrease stress in patients with breast cancer.

Mosquitoes secrete saliva that contains biological substances, including anticoagulants that counteract a host's hemostatic response and prevent blood clotting during blood feeding. This study aimed to detect heparin, an anticoagulant in Aedes togoi using an immunohistochemical detection method, in the salivary canal, salivary gland, and midgut of male and female mosquitoes. Comparisons showed that female mosquitoes contained higher concentrations of heparin than male mosquitoes. On average, the level of heparin was higher in blood-fed female mosquitoes than in non-blood-fed female mosquitoes. Heparin concentrations were higher in the midgut than in the salivary gland. This indicates presence of heparin in tissues of A. togoi.
Purpose: Transglutaminase 2 (TGase 2) is expressed by tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ in various carcinoma. The role of TGase 2 expression in salivary gland tumors is not clear yet. Established slaivary gland tumor (SGT)cell line has been used to study the pathogenesis of salivary gland adenocarcinoma on a cellular level in vitro. The pupose of this study were to examine mRNA expression of TGase 2 in SGT cell line compared to other tumor cell lines, and to apply these results to the pathogenesis of salivary gland tumor. Materials and Methods: After SGT, SCC-15, HN 4, and HeLa tumor cell lines were cultured under preconfl uency, and 3 days after postconfl uency, the cells were harvested for total RNA extraction and cDNA preparation. Result: Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for semiquantitative mRNA analysis was done. TGase 2 mRNA expression was not induced by confl uency in all the cell lines. TGase 2 mRNA expression was variable but markedly enhanced in SGT cell line. Conclusion: mRNA expression of TGase 2 should play an important role in the pathogenesis of SGT cell line originated from ductal cell.
Background: Myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome (MPDS), otherwise called myofascial pain is one of the most common temporomandibular disorders, which in turn is the most common cause of orofacial pain of non-dental origin. Its etiology is multifactorial and still poorly understood. Psychological factors have been shown to play a role in the etiology. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between anxiety and salivary cortisol levels in patients with myofascial pain. Methods: Twenty patients suffering from myofascial pain were recruited as the study group. The same number of age and sex matched healthy individuals were taken as the control group. The salivary samples collected between 9-9:15 am from both groups were analyzed for cortisol levels with the competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. Anxiety levels of 40 patients were measured using Hamilton's anxiety scale. Results: The mean serum cortisol level of the MPDS group showed a highly significant difference (P < 0.001) from the controls. The mean anxiety scores of the MPDS group showed a highly significant difference (P < 0.001) from the controls. A positive correlation was found between anxiety and the salivary cortisol levels in MPDS patients. Conclusions: These findings suggest that anxiety plays a vital role in the etio-pathogenesis of MPDS; thus, besides pharmacological treatment, psychological support is also needed.
