The earn shaft is very important for the safety of automobiles. The earn shaft needs a surface hardening process by high frequency induction to have both strength and toughness. It is required for safety of automobile to consider how the characteristics of tensile strength and toughness are changed according to the condition of surface hardness. In this study, we prepared surface hardened SM53C which is used as cam shaft materials. We examined the tensile strengths according to the depth of surface hardening and the effect of tempering. We also investigated the fracture toughnesses according to the depth of surface hardening(1mm, 2mm).

The abnormal wears such as unfair-wear and early-wear happen in the earn shaft surface of automobiles. These abnormal wears make efficiency of engines decrease and threaten safety of automobiles. The wear characteristics of the cam shaft is very important for the automobile safety. The cam shaft is surface-hardened by the high frequency induction. In this study, we investigated the wear characteristics of the hardened surface with a SM53C steel. The wear characteristics is examined according to the hardened depth and the amount of load.
Recently, interest in ground subsidence in urban areas has increased after a large sinkhole occurred near the high-story building area in Jamsil, Seoul, Korea, in 2014. If a massive sinkhole occurs in an urban area, it is crucial to assess its risk rapidly. Access to humans for on-site safety diagnosis may be difficult because of the additional risk of collapse in the disaster area. Generally, inspection using drones equipped with high-speed lidar sensors can be utilized. However, if the sinkhole is created vertically to a depth of 100 m, similar to the sinkhole in Guatemala, the drone cannot be applied because of the wireless communication limit and turbulence inside the sinkhole. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) scanning system was fabricated and operated using a towed cable in a massive vertical sinkhole to a depth of 200 m. A high-speed lidar sensor was used to obtain a continuous cross-sectional shape at a certain depth. An inertial-measuring unit was applied to compensate for the error owing to the rotation and pendulum movement of the measuring unit. A reconstruction algorithm, including the compensation scheme, was developed. In a vertical hole with a depth of 180 m in the mining area, the fabricated system was applied to scan 0-165 m depth. The reconstructed shape was depicted in a 3D graph.
Recently, the safety in vehicle also has become a hot topic as self-driving car is developed. In passive safety systems such as airbags and seat belts, the system is being changed into an active system that actively grasps the status and behavior of the passengers including the driver to mitigate the risk. Furthermore, it is expected that it will be possible to provide customized services such as seat deformation, air conditioning operation and D.W.D (Distraction While Driving) warning suitable for the passenger by using occupant information. In this paper, we propose robust vehicle occupant detection algorithm based on RGB-Depth-Thermal camera for obtaining the passengers information. The RGB-Depth-Thermal camera sensor system was configured to be robust against various environment. Also, one of the deep learning algorithms, OpenPose, was used for occupant detection. This algorithm is advantageous not only for RGB image but also for thermal image even using existing learned model. The algorithm will be supplemented to acquire high level information such as passenger attitude detection and face recognition mentioned in the introduction and provide customized active convenience service.
In a case of an automobile collision, vehicle damage and injury of the driver and the passenger occur. The scale of the collision which is effected by the extent of vehicle damage and the injury of the passenger, depends on the delta-V. Based on the photograph interpretation o the actual case of accidents in the Seoul and the Incheon area, this study measured the depth of crush and calculated the delta-V. Through verifying the correlation of the depth of crush and the change of velocity, relative equation was evaluated and compared with the prior study results to prove that they are almost identical. Thus, the depth of crush can be used as an index of the degree of impact, which can be utilized as the change of velocity to evaluate the level of injury done to the passengers. However, the period of hospitalization and diagnostics claimed by the injured proves to have no correlation with the delta-V and the extent of vehicle damage, this is due to the non-objective way of diagnosis and the anamnesis of the injured. This study established the absolute limit harmlessness and the choosing limit harmlessness, allowing the appraisal for Yes or No of the injury or the harmlessness based on the prior studies. Moreover, utilizing the relative equation formed between the depth of crush and the delta-V, each case of collision was compared and evaluated in comparison to the limit harmlessness to prove that the 90.4% of the so-called 'claiming-to-be-injured' were exaggerating or fabricating.

Eddy current standard including an artificial slot for the calibration of absolute type surface probe was fabricated. Developed eddy current standard has the electric conductivity and dimensions, and contains artificial slot as established in ASTM E 1629. The width and depth of artificial slot are 0.1 mm and 0.5 mm respectively. This slot was only possible to measure the depth on the two side edges, and impossible for the middle part with general measurement tools. The ultrasonic test method was applied for measuring depth of the middle part of the artificial slot in the standard. Using this method the dimension could be measured successfully with uncertainty about $15\;{\mu}m$. Calibration of eddy current standard for the absolute probe can be performed by this technique.

Developed countries are operating an in-depth database in motor vehicle crashes nationwide. They do not rely solely on the police investigation reports that are responsible for motor vehicle crashes in each country but are developing into a useful database by expanding the categories of data through more indicators addition. In Korea, after implementing comprehensive measures to reduce traffic accident deaths in 2013, the medical centers participated in establishing the actual accident investigation system, which was called as the Korean In-Depth Accident Study (hereinafter KIDAS). This KIDAS database included more in-depth indicators as the types of accidents, types of vehicles, the injury severity, adequacy of safety devices, seating position of passengers. Although there are difficulties in establishing an actual accident investigation system including data collection due to various restrictions, if the system can cooperate with each other such as medical centers, insurance companies, police, fire and rescue services, towing companies, and car repair shops in the future, It would be expected to contribute to the development of safer vehicle, treatment system and traffic safety policy that lower the injury severity of occupant in the event of a motor vehicle crashes.
Accidental anchor drop can cause disturbances to seabed materials and pose significant threats to the safety and serviceability of submarine structures such as pipelines. In this study, a series of anchor drop tests was carried out to investigate the penetration mechanism of a Hall anchor in sand and clay. A special anchor drop apparatus was designed to model the inflight drop of a Hall anchor. Results indicate that Coriolis acceleration was the primary cause of large horizontal offsets in sand, and earth gravity had negligible impact on the lateral movement of dropped anchors. The indued final horizontal offset was shown to increase with the elevated drop height of an anchor, and the existence of water can slow down the landing velocity of an anchor. It is also observed that water conditions had a significant effect on the influence zone caused by anchors. The vertical influence depth was over 5 m, and the influence radius was more than 3 m if the anchor had a drop height of 25 m in dry sand. In comparison, the vertical influence depth and radius reduced to less than 3 m and 2 m, respectively, when the anchor was released from 10 m height and fell into the seabed with a water depth of 15 m. It is also found that the dynamically penetrating anchors could significantly influence the earth pressure in clay. There is a non-linear increase in the measured penetration depth with kinematic energy, and the resulted maximum earth pressure increased dramatically with an increase in kinematic energy. Results from centrifuge model tests in this study provide useful insights into the penetration mechanism of a dropped anchor, which provides valuable data for design and planning of future submarine structures.

In urban areas, blast excavation adjacent to tunnels is carried out frequently. It is generally required to secure static and dynamic stability of nearby tunnel structures for any such activities. Although there is some national guidelines for static safety, there is little guides to risk zoning controling the dynamic behavior of the underground structures. In this study, impacts on the blast-induced vibration are investigated using numerical study. An attempt to define the restricted area of blast adjacent to subway tunnels was also made. Particular concerns were given to tunnel depth and ground types. By carrying out the parametric study on depth and ground patterns, the envelope of blast distance of which dynamic response on the lining is controlled under 1 cm/sec, is established. It is shown that the increase in depth has increased the required safety distance slightly until the distance of 3.5 times of the tunnel diameter. Despite small changes in safety distance, it can be generally said that the effects of depth and stiffness of the ground is not significant in controlling the particle velocity of the tunnel linings.
Fire protection for nuclear power plants should be designed according to the concept of "Defense in Depth" to achieve the reactor safety shutdown. This concept focuses on fire prevention, fire suppression and safe shutdown. Fire prevention is the first line of "Defense in Depth" and the licensee should establish administrative measures to minimize the potential for fire to occur. Administrative measures should include procedures to control handling and use of combustibles. Electrical cables is the major contributor of fire loads in nuclear power plants, therefore electrical cables should be fire retardant. Electrical cables installed in nuclear power plants should pass the flame test in IEEE-383 standard in accordance with NUREG-0800, "Standard Review Plan for the Review of Safety Analysis Reports for Nuclear Power Plants". To assure the fire retardant of electrical cables during design life, both aged and unaged cable specimens should be tested in accordance with IEEE-383. It can be generally thought that the flammability of electrical cables has been increased by wearing as time passed, however the results from fire retardant tests performed in U.S.A and Korea indicate the inconsistent tendency of aging and consequential decrease in flammability. In this study, it is expected that the effective methodology for validation of fire retardant performance would be identified through the review of the results from fire retardant tests.
