  • This study carried out three-dimensional finite element analysis and structural safety evaluation of attachable roadside barriers. The effects of diaphragm distance and the number of bolts on displacements and maximum stresses for various parameters are studied using the LS-DYNA finite element program for this study. In this study, the existing finite element analysis of barriers using the LS-DYNA program is further extended to study static behaviors and structural safety of the barrier with module structures connected by anchor bolt inserted through concrete bridge decks. The numerical results for six parameters are verified by comparing different models with displacements and stress distribution occurred in the barrier and shows good structural performance.

  • Recently hydrogen fuel cell buses have been deployed for the public transportations. In order to introduce buses fueled by hydrogen successfully, the research results of hydrogen bus safety should be discussed and investigated significantly. Especially, Korean government drives research in terms of various applications of hydrogen energy to replace the conventional fuel energy resources and to improve the safety evaluation. Thus it is necessary to examine vehicle crashworthiness under side impact loadings. This study was focused on the simulation result evaluation of full bus model and simplified bus model with hydrogen fuel tank module and mounting system located below floor structure due to the significance of bus side impact accidents. The finite element models of hydrogen bus, fuel tank system and side impact moving barrier were set up and simulation results reported model performance and result comparison of two side impact models. Computational results and research discussion showed the conceptual side impact framework to evaluate hydrogen bus crashworthiness.

  • Hydrogen is gaining attention as a sustainable and renewable energy source, potentially replacing fossil fuels. Its high diffusivity, wide flammable range, and low ignition energy make it prone to ignition even with minimal friction, potentially leading to fire and explosion risks. Workplaces manage ignition risks by classifying areas with explosive atmospheres. However, the effective installation of a blast wall can significantly limit the spread of hydrogen, thereby enhancing workplace safety. To optimize the wall installation of this barrier, we employed the response surface methodology (RSM), considering variables such as wall distance, height, and width. We performed 17 simulations using the Box-Behnken design, conducted using FLACS software. This process yielded two objective functions: explosion likelihood near the barrier and explosion overpressure affecting the blast wall. We successfully achieved the optimal solution using multi-objective optimization for these two functions. We validated the optimal solution through verification simulations to ensure reliability, maintaining a margin of error of 5%. We anticipated that this method would efficiently determine the most effective installation of a blast wall while enhancing workplace safety.

  • In this study, the subframe of passenger car is developed by typical analysis and carsh simulations. According this results, energy absorption and barrier froce is very important to control passenger safety and deformation shape. For that purpose, it is most effective to absorb energy more tailor welded blanks(TWB) subframe than non-TWB. The subframe with TWB is simulated, in which reduced stamping parts, weight reduction and cost down.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary corn resistant starch (RS) on the intestinal morphology and barrier functions of broilers. Methods: A total of 320 one-day-old broilers were randomly allocated to 5 dietary treatments: one normal corn-soybean (NC) diet, one corn-soybean-based diet supplementation with 20% corn starch (CS), and 3 corn-soybean-based diets supplementation with 4%, 8%, and 12% corn resistant starch (RS) (identified as 4% RS, 8% RS, and 12% RS, respectively). Each group had eight replicates with eight broilers per replicate. After 21 days feeding, one bird with a body weight (BW) close to the average BW of their replicate was selected and slaughtered. The samples of duodenum, jejunum, ileum, caecum digesta, and blood were collected. Results: Birds fed 4% RS, 8% RS and 12% RS diets showed lower feed intake, BW gain, jejunal villus height (VH), duodenal crypt depth (CD), jejunal VH/CD ratio, duodenal goblet cell density as well as mucin1 mRNA expressions compared to the NC group, but showed higher concentrations of cecal acetic acid and butyric acid, percentage of jejunal proliferating cell nuclear antigen-positive cells and delta like canonical Notch ligand 4 (Dll4), and hes family bHLH transcription factor 1 mRNA expressions. However, there were no differences on the plasma diamine oxidase activity and D-lactic acid concentration among all groups. Conclusion: These findings suggested that RS could suppress intestinal morphology and barrier functions by activating Notch pathway and inhibiting the development of goblet cells, resulting in decreased mucins and tight junction mRNA expression.

  • With the recent rapid growth of RFID technologies, the Application of RFID systems into the medical or the military industries as well as into the distribution and logistics industry are now attempted continuously. The government and private sectors plan to carry out various small and large scale projects related to RFID systems. However, many companies attempting to apply RFID systems applications into their organizations are encountering many several difficulties because of the lack of installation experience and the absence of an useful guideline. This paper focuses on identification and classification of typical barriers to the successful application of RFID systems according to the five-step method of system application process. Moreover a "barrier map" is produced by conducting a survey and interviews by specialists. In addition, a practical guideline to overcome such barriers is presented and discussed.

  • Nuclear containment structure is the last barrier for being secure from any nuclear power plant accident. Even though the safety requirements of nuclear power plant have been focused on removing accidental situations, nuclear containment structure must reserve the sufficient resisting capacity to any accident because it works as the last barrier. The acceptable nuclear containment structure makes possible to limit the effect of internal accidents and to avoid radioactive release. In this study, to conduct the numerical analysis for the structural safety of a containment structure, loss of coolant accident (LOCA) is considered as the basic accidental load, and Wolsong containment structure is considered as a target structure. The CANDU containment structure, such as Wolsong containment structure, is a prestressed concrete shell structure which has dome and is reinforced with bonded tendons. The evaluation of ultimate pressure capacity was conducted by nonlinear analysis of a prestressed concrete containment structure.

  • In the present work, the measurement method of residual stresses in thermal barrier coatings(TBCs) which are received the thermal shock is performed numerically. For this, the internal residual stresses are predicted by commercial FEM software ABAQUS because the hole drilling strain gage method measures residual stresses only near the surface of a material. As the results of this study, the residual stresses are linearly increased when the surface temperatures are over $1,200^{\circ}C$. It is also found that the values of residual stress are increased as the coating thickness is thin.

  • The objective of this study was to construct the spring-mass models for the car-to-car frontal impact crash. The SISAME software was utilized to extract the spring-mass models using the data from US-NCAP frontal crash tests. The spring-mass models of a compact car and a midsize car could effectively approximate the crash characteristics for the full frontal barrier impact and the car-to-car frontal impact scenarios. Compared to the barrier crash tests, the dummy injuries of midsize car decreased, while the dummy injuries of compact car increased, under the frontal car-to-car crash circumstances.

  • In order to improve occupant protection in frontal crash, the IIHS introduced a small overlap frontal crash test in 2012. When the front corner of a car collides with another car or object, such as utility pole the test replicated the sequence of events. Because occupants move simultaneously forward and toward the side of the vehicle this test is challenging for some airbag and safety belt designs. In the small overlap frontal test, a car travels at 64 km/h toward a rigid barrier. A hybrid III dummy is positioned in the driver seat. 25% of the total width of the car strikes the barrier on the driver side. After review of small overlap frontal test protocol and overall rating, six run-throughs were performed according to the original test method.
