  • ASTM T23 steel with a composition of Fe-2.25%Cr-1.6%W corroded at 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ for 5-70 h in $N_2$/(0.5, 2.5)%$H_2S$-mixed gas at 1 atm. It corroded rapidly, forming the outer FeS scale and the inner (FeS, $FeCr_2O_4$)-mixed scale. The ensuing outward diffusion of $Fe^{2+}$ ions during corrosion led to the protrusion of FeS platelets over the outer FeS scale. The formation of FeS at the surface facilitated the oxidation of Cr to $FeCr_2O_4$ in the inner scale. Since the nonprotective FeS scale existed over the whole scale, T23 steel displayed poor corrosion resistance in the $H_2S$-containing atmosphere.

  • It is inevitable to evaluate the life of turbine rotor because the operating periods of power plants need to be extended. The magnetic methods utilizing Magnetic Barkhausen noise curve were applied to detect the degradation caused by thermal aging. The Magnetic property of material depends on the domain dynamics and it is affected by the microstructure of material. Therefore the magnetic property is very sensitive to the microstructure change of the material. It is, thus, very useful to detect the state of degradation of varying materials. The test specimen made of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel was used widely for turbine rotor material, and seven kinds of specimens with different degradation levels were prepared by the isothermal heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. With the increase of degradation, BHN was decreased. The result was compared with coercive force and vickers hardness.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new sampling and analytical method for the determination of airborne hexavalent chromium, Cr(Ⅵ), in a field plating operation. The procedures of this new method (Shin & Paik's Method) are as the following: Airborne hexavalent chromium is collected on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filter according to the National Institute iota Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 7600, and the filler sample is placed in a screw-capped vial and soaked with 2% NaOH/3% Na₂CO₃ solution immediately after sampling. The Cr(Ⅵ) sample is analyzed by ion chromatography/visible spectrophotometry (IC/VS) according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 218.6. The airborne Cr(Ⅵ) concentrations measured by this method were compared with those determined by three reference methods: One (NIOSH/EPA Method) consisted of sampling airborne Cr(Ⅵ) on PVC filters and storing the sample filters in strew-capped vials according to the NIOSH method, and analyzing Cr(Ⅵ) in samples using IC/VS according to the EPA method. The second method (Impinger Method/NaHCO₃) consisted of absorbing airborne Cr(Ⅵ) into 0.02 M NaHCO₃ solution in midget impinger, and analyzing the Cr(Ⅵ) in samples using IC/VS. The third method was the OSHA Method ID-215. Using these four different methods, lour replicates of air samples were collected at an electroplating process and analyzed simultaneously. Two-way ANOVA and paired t-test were used to test difference among values determined by the methods. There was no significant difference and a strong correlation (r²:0.99) between Cr(Ⅵ) concentrations measured by the Shin & Paik's Method and an impinger method (p>0.05). However, Cr(Ⅵ) concentrations determined by Shin & Paik's Method were significant1y different from those by the NIOSH/EPA Method (p<0.05) or the OSHA method (p<0.05). The Cr(Ⅵ) concentrations of Shin & Paik's Method were significantly higher than those of the NIOSH/EPA Method or the OSHA method. This result indicated that the Shin & Paik's Method may prevent Cr(Ⅵ) losses caused by reduction and give more reliable results of airborne Cr(Ⅵ) concentrations in work environments.

  • Pistachio shell (Pistacia vera) (PS), a low-cost material, has been utilized for the removal of the Cr(VI) ions after treatment with citric acid. Batch experimental steps were applied to obtain Cr(VI) ion adsorption details for the equilibrium between Cr(VI) and modified pistachio shell (MPS). The influences of contact time, pH, adsorbent dose and initial chromium concentration on the adsorption performance of MPS was investigated in detail. The results displayed that adsorption of Cr(VI) by MPS reached to equilibrium after 2 h and after that a little change of Cr(VI) removal efficiency was observed. The sorption percent is higher at lower pH and lower chromium concentration. Two possible mechanisms for reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) can be suggested in Cr(VI) removal. In the first mechanism, Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III) by surface electron-donor groups of the adsorbent and the reduced Cr(III) forms complexes with adsorbent or remains in the solution. This Cr(III) is not adsorbed by adsorbent at pH 1.8. But in second mechanism, the adsorption-coupled reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) occurred on the adsorbent sites. The equilibrium sorption capacity of Cr(VI) ion after 2 h was 64.35 mg/g for MPS.

  • In this paper, we study about wear properties for the metal matrix composites fabricated by low pressure infiltration process. Metal fiber preform reinforced aluminum alloy composite were fabricated by low pressure casting process under 0.4MPa. Infiltration condition was changed the pressure infiltration time of 1 s, 2 s and 5 s under a constant pressure of 0.4MPa. The molten alloy completely infiltrated the FeCrSi metal perform regardless of the increase in the pressure acceleration time. However, the infiltration time at the pressure acceleration time of 1s was shorter than at the pressure acceleration time of 2s or 5s. The FeCrSi/A366.0 composite was investigated the porosity. The porosity is reducing as the pressure acceleration time compared with the pressure acceleration time of 2s and 5s. The FeCrSi/A366.0 composites were investigated the wear resistance. FeCrSi/A366.0 composite at pressure acceleration time of 1s has excellent wear resistance.

  • The effectiveness of fly ash-, quicklime-, and quicklime-fly ash-based stabilization/solidification(S/S) in chromium(Cr) contaminated soils was investigated using modified semi-dynamic leaching tests. Artificial soil samples composed of kaolinite or montmorillonite contaminated with chromium nitrate(4000 mg $Cr^{3+}\;kg^{-1}$ of solid) were prepared and then subjected to S/S treatment using quicklime, fly ash, or quick lime-fly ash. The effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated by assessing the cumulative fraction of leached $Cr^{3+}$ as well as, by computing the effective diffusivity ($D_e$) and the leachability index (LX) of the treated samples. The reduction in $Cr^{3+}$ release for the untreated samples was more pronounced in the presence of montmorillonite, which was attributed to sorption. Treatment with quicklime, fly ash, or quick lime-fly ash was significantly effective in reducing $Cr^{3+}$ release most probably due to the formation of pozzolanic reaction products and $Cr(OH)_3$ precipitation. The most effective treatment was observed in montmorillonite-sand soil samples treated with quicklime-fly ash (99.8% removal). The mean $D_e$ decreased significantly and the mean LX was greater than 9 for all treated samples, indicating that the treated soils were acceptable for "controlled utilization". The mechanism controlling $Cr^{3+}$ leaching from all treated samples during the first 5 days appeared to be diffusion.

  • Electronic structures of Fe overlayers on Cr(Fe/Cr) films, with an Fe coverage of $1-20{\AA}$, have been investigated by using photoemission spectroscopy. Experimental results are compared with supercell band structure calculations for a system with monolayer (ML) Fe on each side of five layer Cr, Fe(1ML)/Cr(5ML)/Fe(1ML). The extracted Fe 3d partial spectral weight in Fe/Cr exhibits very interesting features for very thin Fe overlayers. First, a sharp emissionnear the Fermi energy is observed, which is expected to originate primarily from hybridization between Fe and Cr 3d electrons at the Fe/Cr interface, and partially from the Fe 3d surface states in the Fe overlayer. Second, other structures are observed at higher binding energies which resemble the Cr 3d valence bands, also suggesting large hybridization between Fe and Cr 3d states at the Fe/Cr interface. These conjectures are confirmed by band structure calculations for Fe(1ML)/Cr(5ML)/Fe(1ML).

  • Chromium compounds are widely used in diverse industries including pigment manufacturing, painting, metal plating and leather tanning. With the wide uses of chromium, various adverse effects of the compounds on the environment and human health have been reported. Among them, hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)], which is a carcinogenic heavy metal, has been widely studies. Epidemiological investigations have shown that respiratory cancers had been found in workers who had been occupationally exposed to Cr (VI). In this study, cell toxicity and induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by Cr (VI) (1, 2, 4, $8{\mu}M$) in cultured human bronchial epithelial cells were investigated. Exposure of the cells to Cr (VI) led to cell death, ROS increase, and cytosolic caspase-3 activation. The ROS increase was related with the decreased level of GSH. Chromatin condensation and fragmentation were occurred by Cr (VI) when evaluated by DAPI staining or agarose gel electrophoresis of the extracted DNA. Expression of ROS related genes including glutathione S-transferase, heme oxygenase-1, metallothionein were significantly induced in Cr (VI) treated cells. This result suggests the toxicity in cultured cells by Cr (VI) was expressed through the apoptotic process with ROS induction.

  • To evaluate the metabolic changes in normal adult brains due to alterations SENSE and NEX (number of excitation) by multi voxel MR Spectroscopy at 3.0 Tesla. The study group was composed of normal volunteers (5 men and 8 women) with a mean ($\pm$ standard deviation) age of 41 (${\pm}11.65$). Their ages ranged from 28 to 61 years. MR Spectroscopy was performed with a 3.0T Achieva Release Version 2.0 (Philips Medical System-Netherlands). The 8 channel head coil was employed for MRS acquisition. The 13 volunteers underwent multi voxel spectroscopy (MVS) and single voxel spectroscopy (SVS) on the thalamus area with normally gray matter. Spectral parameters were as follows: 15 mm of thickness; 230 mm of FOV (field of view); 2000 msecs of repetition time (TR); 288 msecs of echo time (TE); $110{\times}110$ mm of VOI (view of interest); $15{\times}15{\times}15$ mm of voxel size. Multi voxel spectral parameters were made using specially in alteration of SENSE factor (1~3) and 1~2 of NEX. All MRS data were processed by the jMRUI 3.0 Version. There was no significant difference in NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr ratio between MVS and SVS likewise the previous results by Ross and coworkers in 1994. In addition, despite the alterations of SENSE factor and NEX in MVS, the metabolite ratios were not changed (F-value : 1.37, D.F : 3, P-value : 0.262). However, line-width of NAA peak in MVS was 3 times bigger than that in SVS. In the present study, we demonstrated that the alterations of SENSE factor and NEX were not critically affective to the result of metabolic ratios in the normal brain tissue.
