  • In this study, we report for the first time a hybridization between Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas in South Korea. On 7th May 2012, a sea turtle (Jeju sea turtle 01, JST01) was found in the east coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. The morphological characteristics of JST01 were compared with those of C. caretta and C. mydas that were frequently observed in Korean Seas. Interestingly, JST01 showed similar morphological characters such as body color, appearance of carapace, shape of upper beak, serration on marginal scute, and two claws with those of C. caretta. On the other hand, JST01 showed also similar patterns in several characteristics including the numbers of marginal, inframarginal and costal scute, smooth carapace without keel, no contact between costal scute and nuchal scute with those of C. mydas. From these results, we suggest that JST01 is one of hybrid animals bred between C. caretta and C. mydas, because JST01 has species-specific characters from both species. We anticipate that our study would be useful and have significant impact onto study inter-specific hybridization in the groups of sea turtle.

  • Four leptocephali (TL 109.8~129.7 mm) of the family Ophichthidae, collected from Sangju in the South Sea of Korea, were identified using morphological and molecular methods. Our four leptocephali were similar to Ophichthus sp. based on morphological characters: the melanophores present in series of eight gut swellings; total myomeres 144~151; body depth in total length less than 10%; eight or nine black horizontal bands present from anus to caudal fin base. On the other hand, our four leptocephali were identified to Pisodonophis sp. based on 826 base pairs of 12S rRNA gene nucleotide sequences. Our results showed that morphology-based identification did not agree with molecular identification, indicating difficulty in differentiating morphologically between Ophichthus and Pisodonophis leptocephali. We, herein, firstly describe morphological characteristics of Pisodonophis sp. leptocephali from Korea.

  • A single specimen of the ophichthid Muraenichthys gymnopterus (254.6 mm TL) was collected from the middle Yellow Sea off Incheon, Korea. It represents the first record of the species, the genus, and the subfamily from Korea. This species is characterized by the following combination of characters: a constricted midlateral gill opening; dorsal fin origin before anus, closer to the anus than to the gill opening; blunt teeth, jaw teeth in bands, and multiserial dentition; third preopercular pore present; single infraorbital pore between anterior and posterior nostrils; brownish colour; depth and width of gill opening 43.2 times and 33.7~65.3 times in total length, respectively; eye diameter 15.0~31.0 times in head length and total vertebrae 154~161. New Korean names are proposed, "Gaet-mul-baem-a-gwa" for the subfamily Myrophinae, "Gaet-mul-baem-sok" for the genus Muraenichthys, and "Gaet-mul-baem" for M. gymnopterus.

  • From the 1890s to the 1900s, Modern Japan investigated the sea of Korea (Joseon Dynasty) several times. The records of investigation result were "Fishery Circumstances of Korean Sea"(1893), "Official Trip Report on Wonsan Area of Korea"(1895), "Nautical Publication of Korea"(1894), "Patrol Reports of Korea Fishery Association"(1898~1900), "Fishery Guide for Korean Sea"(1903) and "Chronicles of Korea Fisheries"(1908~1911). Although these surveys were conducted more than 100 years ago, they provide a glimpse into the fishing situation of Korea as well as the lives of residents in the coastal areas. In particular, Chronicles of Korean Fisheries is a vast collection of four volumes, and it has much to do with the history and culture of Korea, including marine products from the coastal waters, the population of coastal villages, the number of people engaged in fishing, and the number of fishing boats and nets. From the perspective of the development of fisheries studies, the modern classification of marine products after Linne has already been applied, and the classification of those days is quite different from that of the present classification, so it can be said to be an interesting data from the viewpoint of animal and plant taxonomy.

  • The manoeuvrabilities of a ship are decided by the values of her manoeuvring indices. The manoeuvring indices consist of two kinds: indices K and T. The former decides a ship's turning ability and the latter, the length of time delay to a steady turning motion after her rudder has finished the turn of an ordered angle. In this paper, the author figured out the values of the manoeuvring indices of the m. s. 'SAEBADA' (GT: 2,275,7 ton), the training ship of tile National Fisheries University of Busan through her Z test and analyzed these values and the other data which were obtained from her Z test to study her manoeuvrabilities. The results of]tamed are summarized as follows: 1. The manoeuvring indices K' of the m. s. 'SAEBADA' were $1.052(at\;10{\circ}\;Z\;test)\;0.925(at\;20{\circ}\;Z\;test)\;and\;0.877(at\;30{\circ}\;Z\;test)$. Her manoeuvring indices $0.815(at\;10{\circ}\;Z\;test)\;0.502(at\;20{\circ}\;Z\;test)\;and\;0.441(at\;30{\circ}\;Z\;test)$. Her above calculated values K', T' showed that her obeying ability to the turn of her rudder was more increased when her rudder was used to large angle than to small angle, but on the other hand in this case her turning ability was slightly reduced. 2. As it appeared that the calculated K'-values of the m.s. 'SAEBADA' were slightly smaller than the standard K'-values of the fishing boats similar in length, and her overshoot angles at her Z test were greater than other general ships, her turning ability was found to t]e slightly lower. 3. When the m. s. 'SAEBADA' took a turn at her $10^{\circ}\;Z$ test, running distance was about 8.6 times her own length and didn't exceed the standard manoeuvrability distance, 5 to 11 times general ships' own length, therefore she was considered to have a good manoeuvrability synthetically.

  • The diet composition of chub mackerel Scomber japonicus were studied using 959 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea from January to November 2022. The size of the specimens ranged from 22.8 to 45.8 cm in total length. S. japonicus were fed mainly on euphausiids that constituted 77.7% in IRI. Fishes were the second largest prey component. Its diet also includes small quantities amphipods, copepods, shrimps, crabs and cephalopods. The diet composition of S. japonicus showed changes in season. The euphausiids feeding rate was highest in summer, whereas the proportion of fishes was higher in winter than in other seasons. The proportion of fishes has increased as the body size of S. japonicus increased, whereas the proportion of euphausiids decreased gradually. As the body size of S. japonicus increased the mean weight of prey per the stomach (mW/ST) tended to increase significantly (One-way ANOVA, P<0.05).

  • The seasonal and vertical biomass of marine forest seaweeds were examined to select a suitable species at 12 sites of the South Sea in Korea between 2018 and 2019. The Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) was also calculated in terms of biomass for six species (three kelp and three Sargassum species). A total of 16 marine forest-forming species including four kelp and 12 Sargassum species were observed at the 12 sites. The average annual seaweed biomass by season and depth ranged from 843.73-2,925.85 g wet wt. m-2 at the eastern South Sea and from 343.87-4,580.10 g wet wt. m-2 at the western South Sea. In the kelp species, the Ecklonia cava biomass was predominant, followed by E. stolonifera. The macroalgal species with the greatest biomass was Sargassum macrocarpum, followed by S. horneri. The HSI values of E. stolonifera were between 0.76-1.0 at eight sites and those of E. cava were 0.58-0.92 at four sites, indicating that E. stolonifera was more suitable than E. cava. In the HSI values of the Sargassum species, S. horneri ranged between 0.84-1.0 at all 12 sites and the S. macrocarpum values were between 0.68-0.99. The results indicate that E. cava and S. macrocarpum were the most suitable for the marine forest construction in terms of the seaweed biomass, and E. stolonifera and S. horneri in terms of the HSI values. Thus, we suggest that seaweed biomass and HSI values should be considered when choosing suitable forest-forming species.

  • The seven leptocephali (14.6~68.0 mm in total length) of the family Ophichthidae, from the East Sea of Korea, were identified using 12S rRNA 861-bp sequences and their morphological development were described. Our seven leptocephali were identified to Echelus uropterus based on genetic distance (d=0.000) being well consistent with that of adult E. uropterus. Our seven leptocephali of E. uropterus are characterized by morphological combinations: caudal fin present; the melanophores present in series of nine gut swellings; total myomeres 154~158; body depth in total length less than 10%; eight black horizontal bands present from anus to caudal fin base. Our morphological and molecular results suggest that E. uropterus may be an intermediate group between subfamily Ophichthinae and Myrophinae.
