Purpose: The present research is a descriptive study aimed at understanding clinical nurses' Video display terminal (VDT) syndrome and identifying the factors that affect their VDT syndrome. Methods: Data were collected from 239 clinical nurses working in two metropolitan cities. Research tools included subject's VDT syndrome assessing musculoskeletal, ophthalmic, dermal, psychiatric, and whole body syndromes. The data were analyzed using frequency analysis, average and standard deviation, t-test, One-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis with the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. Results: The subjects' VDT syndrome score was 1.34 out of 5. There were significant differences in participating subjects' VDT syndrome, hospital's size, working unit, health status, diagnosis of illness, having an Order Communication System (OCS), having an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) System, continuous VDT working for more than one hour, break time during VDT use, VDT use time, comfort of the chair, adjustability of the height of the chair, size of the VDT's desk, distance between the monitor and the user's eyes, resolution of the monitor, and frequency of eye exercise during VDT use. According to the research, influencing factors on VDT syndrome in clinical nurses included size of the VDT's desk, frequency of eye exercise during VDT use, having an EMR system, break time during VDT use, diagnosis illness, and having an OCS' system. Conclusion: The findings from this study can be used as a basis for future VDT syndrome prevention education and programs for clinical nurses.
Objectives : The first object is to reveal the mechanism of diarrhea based on exterior heat syndrome for Taeumin as explained in Donguisusebowon's Taeeumingansuyeoliyeolbyeonglon. The second objective is to review the treatment for Taeumin as explained in Leejema's Galgeunnabogjatang because the drug composition of Galgeunnabogjatang, the drug that treats this syndrome, is not written. Methods : As the first step, the paper will review the disease pathology for Taeumin written, and check the existence of disease path that can be viewed as exterior heat syndrome. As the second step, the paper will review the probability of exterior heat syndrome deriving from Taeumin disease path and morph into the exterior heat syndrome. Results : Using the first step to discover the direct correlation between exterior heat syndrome and the theory of disease for Taeumin led to a failure, but through the second step, the paper was able to confirm the probability that exterior heat syndrome could derive from Wiwansuhanpyohanbyeong's Wiwanhanjeung. Based on this, the paper was able to determine the Galgeunnabogjatang suitable for the treatment of exterior heat syndrome. Conclusions : Exterior heat syndrome is created when healthy qi is stimulated to quickly build up the pathogen of Taeumin exterior heat syndrome, but only exterior heat is generated and the cold remains. Its main symptoms are fever, excessive sweating, and difficult painful red-urination. Exterior heat syndrome diarrhea refers to the diarrhea which is generated from the Taeumin's disease pathology. The paper determined that Galgeunnabogjatang, which is listed in Donguisusebowon the seventh edition Boyubang.
Objectives: Literature Study of clinical cases with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as reference for Korean medicine based treatment of juvenile patients with Down's syndrome. Methods: 4 TCM journals with the highest impact factors were searched and selected among the journals listed in www.cnki.net. The search keywords were "蒙古症", "唐氏症(産生唐氏症)", "唐氏症候群", "先天愚型", "伸舌樣痴呆", "21三体綜合徵", "三染色体症", "Down's syndrome", and "Mongolism". Accordingly, searched papers were analyzed. Results: Total 6 studies were selected: RCT(5), case report(1). Among the RCT related studies, 2 studies tested the effect of Electroacupuncture (電鍼), 1 study tested the effect of Electroacupuncture and Pharmacopuncture (藥鍼) treatment together, and 2 studies tested the effect of Electroacupuncture and Herbal Medicines (藥物) co-treatment. In all the studies, the study groups showed significantly improved intelligence quotient (IQ) in comparison with the control groups. The case report showed improvement of cognitive ability and other clinical parameters as a result of Acupuncture (鍼) and Herbal Medicines co-treatment in juvenile patients with Down's syndrome. Conclusions: Clinical studies testing the effect of TCM for the treatment of Down's syndrome have been conducted in small scales, and all the studies showed a certain level of brain function improvement of the patients in the study groups. These results implicate that the methods in Korean medicine can be highly potential treatment options for the treatment of Down's syndrome. Conduction of accurate and well-controlled studies in large scale would be required to prove the effect of Korean medicine for the treatment of patients with Down's syndrome.
Objective: The main symptoms of the Wallenberg's syndrome are ataxia of gait, clumsiness of ipsilateral limbs, nausea and vomiting, vertigo, visual disturbance such as difficulty in focusing blurred vision diplopia, numbness, dysphagia, hoarseness, hiccup, nystagmus, Homer's syndrome. The purpose of this paper is to report the patient with the Wallenberg's syndrome who was improved by oriental medical treatment. Methods: In terms of exuberance of Yang(vital function) of the liver and stagnation of the liver Ki(energy), we let the patient take Chunghunhwadam-Tang, Hwangryeonhaedok-Tang and Dangkwihwalhyeol-Tang, at the same time, treated with acupuncture, Sa-Am and Dong-Si acupuncture therapy twice a day. Results: We could know that symptoms of the Wallenberg's Syndrome were improved after observing left sensory paralysis was almost recovered, hiccup was completely healed and vertigo was reduced to 1/10. Conclusions: We confirmed that oriental drugs and acupuncture by differentiation of syndromes make the patient with the Wallenberg's Syndrome reduce and improve symptoms he has.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Korean mothers in parenting children with Hunter's syndrome, an X linked recessive genetically inherited disease usually affecting boys. Methods: Data were collected from 14 mothers having children with Hunter's syndrome, through two focus group interviews and individual in-depth interviews. Qualitative data from the field notes and transcribed notes were analyzed using the grounded theory methodology developed by Strauss & Corbin (1998). Results: The core category about the process of rearing children with Hunter's syndrome was identified as "navigating in the maze". The process of rearing children with Hunter's syndrome passed through three phases; 'entering an unknown region', 'struggling to escape from the unknown region', 'settling down in the unknown region'. Conclusion: In this study "navigating in the maze", as the core category deeply showed joys and sorrows of mothers in the process of rearing their children with Hunter's syndrome. In this rearing process they gradually adjusted themselves to their given condition. Also they gained initiatively coping strategies to care for, and protect their children. Therefore health care providers can establish supportive programs in the clinical field to empower these mothers by reflecting their proactive coping strategies.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effectiveness of Korean medicine, especially Gami-onchung-eum, for treatment of a patient with Sjogren's syndrome. Methods: The patient, diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome, was suffering from systemic symptoms accompanied by dry mouth, dry eye, and fatigue. We treated her with Korean medicine involving a herbal decoction, acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping. We used the European League Against Rheumatism $Sj{\ddot{o}}gren^{\prime}s$ Syndrome Patient Reported Index for assessment. Results: Based on the European League Against Rheumatism $Sj{\ddot{o}}gren^{\prime}s$ Syndrome Patient Reported Index, after 28 days of treatment, dry mouth decreased to a score of 5, dry eye decreased to 2, and fatigue decreased to 3. Conclusions: Korean medicine, including Gami-onchung-eum, may be an effective treatment for Sjogren's syndrome.
The current study examines PCC (percentage of correct consonant), speech intelligibility, and oral motor function between the group of typically developing children and the group of children with Down's syndrome. To 15 children with Down's syndrome (mean CA: 9;7) and 15 typically developing children on receptive language age, the following tests were administered: K-WPPSI (2001), Picture Vocabulary Test (Kim et al., 1995), Oral and Speech Motor Control Protocol for total oral functional score (Robbins et al., 1987), DDK and Assessment of Phonology and Articulation for Children (APAC, Kim et al., 2007) for PCC and speech intelligibility. Pearson correlation coefficients were computed for the total oral functional score, PCC and DDK of each group. The statistical analysis showed that there is no significant difference in total functional score and DDK when IQ was controlled. There was a significant correlation between total oral functional score and PCC in the Down's syndrome group and a significant correlation between total oral functional score and intelligibility in the Down's syndrome group whether IQ was controlled or not. The findings suggest that both cognitive ability and overall oral motor function need to be considered for the intervention to enhance PCC or speech intelligibility of children with Down's syndrome.
Objectives To assess the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy in patients with Tourette's syndrome. Methods We queried nine electronic databases using the keywords "Tourette's Syndrome" and "tuina OR chuna" to identify RCTs that investigated the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy in patients with Tourette's syndrome. Results Thirteen RCTs were selected according to the inclusion criteria. A systematic review showed that Chuna manual therapy can have a curative effect on patients with Tourette's syndrome. Conclusions In this study, 13 RCTs reported that Chuna manual therapy was effective for Tourette's syndrome. These findings provide a basis for its clinical use. However, all studies involved populations belonging to the same country. Many studies lacked details of the research methodology. Therefore, further studies are required to produce high-quality evidence.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and diagnostic components in adult women. Methods: The subjects of this study were 12,016 women that were aged twenty years or older and underwent an annual health check-up for National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) from 2009 to 2013. Data including blood pressure, waist circumstance, fasting glucose, triglyceride, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were received from the NHIS. This data was analyzed through the use of descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test, and multiple logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome and diagnostic components increased with age. In the five diagnostic components of the metabolic syndrome, the prevalence of low HDL-C was highest in 20s to 40s. The prevalence of high blood pressure was highest in the people aged fifty or older. The risk of metabolic syndrome in 2013 was higher in women with abnormal diagnostic component of metabolic syndrome in 2009 and highest in women with abnormal waist circumstance in 2009. Conclusion: There was a need to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome components according to age. Education on metabolic syndrome was required for those that had one or two abnormal diagnostic components. The risk of abdominal obesity related to metabolic syndrome needs to be emphasized. Moreover the education for management of abdominal obesity also needs to be emphasised.
