Bisphosphonate's effect on the tongue in adult male albino rats and the possible protective role of rutin: light and scanning electron microscopic study

  • Alendronate sodium (ALS) is a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate used for the treatment of different bone disorders. However, its adverse effect on oral soft tissue has been detected. Rutin (RUT) is natural flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This work aimed to investigate the possible effect of ALS on the tongue of adult male albino rats and to evaluate the possible protective role of RUT. Forty adult male albino rats were equally divided into four groups: group I (control), group II (RUT): Received RUT 50 mg/kg, group III (ALS): Received ALS 1 mg/kg, group IV (ALS+RUT):(ALS+RUT): Received ALS and RUT with the same doses as pervious groups. The drugs were given once daily for 5 weeks. Tongue specimens were taken and processed for light and scanning electron microscopic inspection. ALS treated group revealed structural changes in the tongue in the form of decrease in the height of the filiform papillae with blunt ends, marked atrophy in some papillae with areas of focal loss, loss of some epithelial cells, pyknotic nuclei and cytoplasmic vacuoles in some epithelial cells. The lamina propria showed inflammatory cellular infiltration with congested blood vessels. Statistically, there were highly significant decrease in the number of proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunopositive cells, area percentage of Bcl-2 immunoexpression and highly significant increase in the collagen content compared to control group. Administration of RUT with ALS minimizes these changes. RUT protected the rat tongue against the histological and immunohistochemical changes induced by ALS through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze rut resistance and moisture susceptibility of warm mix asphalt(WMA) mixture. The deformation strength ($S_D$), which is known to have high correlations with the high-temperature deformation resistance of dense grade mixture, was used as a tool, together with wheel tacking (WT) test, for evaluating warm mix asphalt mixture's rut resistance.

Production of Cellulase by Trichoderma reesei Rut C30 in a Batch Fermenter

  • Cellulase production by batch culture using the Trichoderma reesei Rut C30 strain with various concentrations of Solka Floc with 1 % wheat bran was studied in a 2.5 I fermenter. The cellulase activity increased with Solka Floc concentration up to 5%. When 5% Solka Floc and 1% wheat bran were contained in the medium, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and filter paper (FP) activities were 232.4 U/$m\ell$ and 21.25 U/$m\ell$, respectively. The productivity was 143.6 FPU $1^{-l}h^{-1}$ and the yield was 425 FPU/g. The colonial morphology of T. reesei Rut C30 grown on Avicel agar plates and the changes in mycelial morphology of T. reesei Rut C30 with culture time are also presented.

Development of Feasible Dynamic Stability in Wheel Tracking Test for Asphalt Concrete Mixtures (아스팔트 혼합물 반복주행 시험에서 합리적 동적안정도의 산정 방법)

  • Dynamic stability (DS) in the wheel tracking (WT) test is used as a basic index of rut-resistance for asphalt mixtures. In general, the deeper rut depth is obtained from the weaker mixture, resulting in the lower DS value. On the other hand, the shallower rut depth is obtained from the stronger mixture, resulting in the higher DS. However, it is not always the case when the DS is calculated by the existing method because the DS is simply determined based on the slope at the final stage of the rut depth-cycle curve. Specifically, in the case of the depth-cycle curve showing a steeper slope in the early part but flatter slope in last part, the DS is calculated to be higher than the curve showing a ever-increasing slope throughout the test. As long as the last part of slope is flatter, the deeper final rut depth is evaluated to show a higher DS than the little final rut depth. Therefore, a reasonable method for DS evaluation need to be established. Several new methods were suggested by considering the early, middle and final parts of rut depth to determine a reasonable DS. The results have shown that those new methods have demonstrated a significant improvement in distinguishing similarly performing mixtures. The result also showed that $DS_2$ had better correlation with SD than any other methods , representing the rutting resistance of asphalt mixture very well. The new DS calculation method is relatively simple and easy to follow. More validatin study is required for practical application.

  • Rut-resistance pavement is adopted to prevent pavement from plastic deformation since 1998. The objective of this paper is to investigate performance and economic efficiency between rut-resistance pavement and conventional hot-mix asphalt(HMA) on national highway. The pavement deterioration models incorporated in HDM-4 have been calibrated and adapted to local road conditions based on observed pavement rut-depth data. Based on calibration result of HDM-4, the economic evaluation including road agency cost and user cost is performed for 34 road pavement sections. Furthermore, we presented optimal timing for maintenance and performance levels subject to different budget. We found that rut-resistance pavement is performing better than conventional hot-mix asphalt in most road sections. Furthermore, we confirmed that the application of HDM-4 is useful for pavement project planning and evaluation. More investigation is needed to enlarge the scope of the pavement data and to explore more deeply socio-environmental cost and delay cost.

A Study of Reliability of Predictive Models for Permanent Deformation and Fatigue Failure Related to Flexible Pavement Design (연성포장설계의 소성변형과 피로파괴 예측모델에 대한 신뢰성 연구)

  • PURPOSES: The objective of this paper is to select the confidential intervals by utilizing the second moment reliability index(Hasofer and Lind; 1974) related to the number of load applications to failure which explains the fatigue failure and rut depth that it indicates the permanent deformation. By using Finite Element Method (FEM) Program, we can easily confirm the rut depth and number of load repetitions without Pavement Design Procedures for generally designing pavement depths. METHODS : In this study, the predictive models for the rut depth and the number of load repetitions to fatigue failure were used for determining the second moment reliability index (${\beta}$). From the case study results using KICTPAVE, the results of the rut depth and the number of load repetitions to fatigue failure were deducted by calculating the empirical predictive equations. Also, the confidential intervals for rut depth and number of load repetitions were selected from the results of the predictive models. To determine the second moment reliability index, the spreadsheet method using Excel's Solver was used. RESULTS : From the case studies about pavement conditions, the results of stress, displacement and strain were different with depth conditions of layers and layer properties. In the clay soil conditions, the values of strain and stresses in the directly loaded sections are relatively greater than other conditions. It indicates that the second moment reliability index is small and confidential intervals for rut depth and the number of load applications are narrow when we apply the clay soil conditions comparing to the applications of other soil conditions. CONCLUSIONS : According to the results of the second moment reliability index and the confidential intervals, the minimum and maximum values of reliability index indicate approximately 1.79 at Case 9 and 2.19 at Case 22. The broadest widths of confidential intervals for rut depth and the number of load repetitions are respectively occurred in Case 9 and Case 7.

Feasibility of Estimating Rut Resistance of SMA Mixture by Static Loading Test Using Confined Specimen (공시체 구속 상태에서 정하중 시험에 의한 SMA 혼합물의 소성변형 저항성평가 가능성)

  • It is well-known fact that the stone-mastic asphalt (SMA) mixture has shown superior rut resistance, compared with the dense-graded asphalt (DGA) mixture in highway pavements. However, the SMA is measured to be inferior to DGA mixes when tested by well-known high-temperature test methods, such as the wheel tracking (WT), asphalt pavement analyzer, the Marshall Stability and Kim Test. Therefore, this study examined the reasons why it was measured to be inferior, and devised a potential procedure by which the superiority of SMA could be measured at $60^{\circ}C$. The strength against deformation ($S_D$), which was known to show very high correlation with WT results for DGA mixes, was measured by the Kim Test on the specimen confined in the compacted mold. In standard Kim Test, which used the specimen without confinement, the DGA was measured to show higher $S_D$ than the SMA. But by confining specimen, it was found that the $S_D$ of SMA was measured to be higher than that of DGA. Therefore, the confined static test protocol devised in this study was found to be feasible for evaluating rut resistance of SMA mix.

Determination of Valid Dynamic Stability in Wheel Tracking Test of Asphalt Concretes (아스팔트 콘크리트 반복주행 시험에서의 동적안정도 정립에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to establish valid methodology for determining dynamic stability(DS) of deformation-cycle curve which is obtained through wheel tracking(WT) test, the most widely used method for forecast of rutting tendency of asphalt mixture. Existing Korean and Japanese methods for DS are unrealistic and do not really reflect characteristics of rut resistance of asphalt concretes especially when the slope of deformation-cycle curve is stabilized at the end. It was proved that the new DS developed in this study reflected rut resistance characteristics better than existing methods. It is especially effective to distinguish the mixtures with high DR(depth of rut) but stable slope at the end of curve from the mixture with lower DR and continuous slope. The field evaluation must be followed to prove whether the mixture which shows a high DS value this method perform well in the filed.

Association of Polymorphisms in the Bovine Leptin Gene with Ultrasound Measurements for Improving in Korean Cattle

  • The identification method that inflects real time ultrasound (RUT) and the potential application of marker assisted selection (MAS) for improvement of a cow population of Hanwoo (Korean Native cattle) was studied. The averages of RUT longissimus muscle area, RUT fat thickness, and RUT marbling score scanned at the 13th rib were 55.78 $cm^2$, 3.70 mm and 3.83 scores, respectively. We investigated the effects of the two SNPs (Kpn2 I and Msp I) in the leptin gene on carcass traits for Hanwoo cows by using ultrasound measurements. Genotype CC of the Kpn2 I had a significantly higher effect on back fat thickness (4.23 mm) and longissimus muscle area (57.57 $cm^2$) than genotype TT (3.14 mm, 53.93 $cm^2$, respectively, p<0.05). Genotype AA of the Msp I had a significantly higher effect only on marbling score (5.37) than genotype AB (3.57, p<0.05) and BB (3.37, p<0.05). Significant effects of SNPs in the leptin gene were found for the ultrasound measures of body composition in live cattle.

Evaluation of Permanent Deformation Characteristics of Recycled Asphalt Concretes Made by Improved Binder-Rejuvenation (바인더 회생방식을 개선한 재생 아스팔트 콘크리트의 소성변형 특성 연구)

  • This paper is one of the studies for developing new methodologies for improving performance of hot-mix recycled asphalt mixtures. The objective of this study is to evaluate rut-resistance characteristics of recycled asphalt mixture which was prepared by newly developed mixing method. The new mixing method provided more sufficient rejuvenation of old binder of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), making homogeneous binder viscosity level in a recycled mixture. Two aggregates (gneiss and granite), two RAP contents (15% and 30%) and two contents (none and 6%) of polymer modifier (LDPE) were used. Recycled mixture was prepared with two methods; method A and method F. To examine difference of binder oxidation level by type of material within a recycled mixture, Gel-permeation chromatography(GPC) analysis was performed on the binders mixed with coarse aggregates and matrix separately. Laboratory tests were performed for evaluation of rut resistance characteristics of each recycled mixture and these includes wheel tracking (WT) test and Kim test. Rut depth and dynamic stability were obtained from WT test and deformation strength $(S_D)$ was obtained from Kim test. The results of regression analysis was shown that correlation $(R^2)$ of F mixing mixtures was higher than one of A mixing mixtures. Therefore, F mixing mixtures showed more consistent rut resistance than h mixing mixtures.
