  • The Pythagorean formula for baseball postulated by James (1982) indicates the winning percentage as a function of runs scored and runs allowed. However sometimes, the Pythagorean formula gives a less accurate estimate of winning percentage. We use the records of team vs team historic win loss records of Korean professional baseball clubs season from 2005 and 2014. Using assumption that the difference between winning percentage and pythagorean expectation are affected by unusual distribution of runs scored and allowed, we suppose that difference depends on mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation of runs scored per game and runs allowed per game, respectively. In conclusion, the discrepancy is mainly related to the coefficient of variation and standard deviation for run allowed per game regardless of run scored per game.

  • We use a Markov chain model to analyze the Korean Baseball League. We derive the distributions of the number of runs scored and the number of batters that complete their turn at bat in a baseball game using the time inhomogeneous Markov chain. The model is tested with real data produced from the 2011 Korean Baseball League.

  • OPS is a sabermetric baseball statistic calculated as the sum of a player's on base percentage (OBP) and slugging percentage (SLG). One of the frequently cited problem with OPS is that OPS gives equal weight to its two components, OBP and SLG. In fact, OBP contributes significantly more to scoring runs than SLG does. This paper provides some exploration into the correct weighting of OBP to SLG when adding the two together. By correlating different coefficients of OBP to runs scored per game, the weighted OPS that weighting OBP 56% in two place more than SLG produced the highest correlation. We found that the weight of OBP increases as RPG increases. Also we suggest the linear regression equation of the best OBP coefficient against RPG.

  • The Pythagorean won-loss formula postulated by James (1980) indicates the percentage of games as a function of runs scored and runs allowed. Several hundred articles have explored variations which improve RMSE by original formula and their fit to empirical data. This paper considers a variation on the formula which allows for variation of the Pythagorean exponent. We provide the most suitable optimal exponent in the Pythagorean method. We compare it with other methods, such as the Pythagenport by Davenport and Woolner, and the Pythagenpat by Smyth and Patriot. Finally, our results suggest that proposed method is superior to other tractable alternatives under criterion of RMSE.

  • This research is to comprehensively evaluate offensive abilities of baseball players who are expected to produce as many runs as possible by their hitting and running. To this end, we establish a simulation program to obtain the so-called scoring index of an individual player. The scoring index of a player is defined as an expected number of runs scored by an imaginary team that is composed of nine copies of the player. As a simulation input, we use 2014 season data of Korean pro-baseball. As a result, we present the scoring indices of top 10 players, 9 Korean pro-baseball teams, and overall 2014 season. The scoring index can serve as a comprehensive evaluation of offensive ability of a player or a team, selection of players for a (national) team or for a starting line-up, estimation of player's worth, and so on.

  • The Pythagorean theorem for baseball based on the number of runs they scored and allowed has been noted that in many baseball leagues a good predictor of a team's end of season won-loss percentage. We study the convergence characteristics of the Pythagorean expectation formula during the baseball game season. The three way ANOVA based on main effects for year, rank, and baseball processing rate is conducted on the basis of using the historical data of Korean professional baseball clubs from season 2005 to 2014. We perform a regression analysis in order to predict the difference in winning percentage between teams. In conclusion, a difference in winning percentage is mainly associated with the ranking of teams and baseball processing rate.

  • Run expectancy (RE) is the mean number of runs scored from a specific base runner/outs situation of an inning to the end of the inning. Win expectancy (WE) is the probability that a particular team will win the game at a specific game state such as half-inning, score difference, outs, and/or runners on base. In this paper, we derive RE and WE for the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) League based on six-year data from 2007 to 2012 using a Markov chain model.

  • In any military services, young leaders are superiors to another and the leaders must be equipped with not only command and control(C2) and management capabilities but with a skill set that addresses their service members' problems and hardships throughout a counseling approach. These young leaders other than regular professional counselors are wearing dual hats as a commander and a counselor to address their service member's issues. There are couple of hours to give a lecture about counseling during the basic training course, however, we noticed that there are some limitations to cover up the uniqueness of counseling during the course, since we cannot rule out the unique vertical situation within military system that runs by its hierarchy. Therefore, we developed education program in order to enhance commander's counseling skills, refined the program with thorough review and commentary by professions and military commanders, and provided 10 events of program to the young leaders. As a result, the leaders scored high on self-effectiveness, communication skills, and counseling development-level. If we adjust minor changes to the program, it will be the outstanding program to improve young leaders' counseling capability.
