  • Material characteristics and lifetime evaluation are very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability of the rubber components. In this paper, the material test and accelerated heat aging test were carried out to predict the useful life of NBR and EPDM rubber mount for a compression motor which is used in a refrigerator. In order to investigate the effects of heat-aging on the material properties, crosslink density, modulus at 100% strain, stress-strain curves were obtained from uniaxial and equi-biaxial tensile tests. The change of compression set were used for assessment of the useful life and the time to threshold value were plotted against the reciprocal of absolute temperature to give the Arrhenius plot. The useful life at variable temperatures are obtained in the Arrhenius relationship.

  • Silica-filled rubber compound needs longer mixing time compared to carbon black-filled one since it has poor dispersion or the filler. Influence of the mixing procedure on the properties of natural rubber compound filled with both silica and carbon black was studied. The discharge temperature of the master batch (MB) mixing was $150^{\circ}C$. The mixing time was longer when silica and carbon black were loaded separately than when loaded simultaneously. The mixing time was longer when silica was loaded first than when carbon black is loaded first. The compounds prepared by one MB step (conventional mixing) were compared with the compounds prepared by two MB steps (two-step mixing). Scorch times of the two-step mixing compounds were longer than those by the conventional mixing ones. Bound rubber contents of the formers were lower than those of the tatters. The two-step mixing vulcanizates had longer elongation at break, higher tensile strength, and better fatigue life.

  • Zinc methacrylate(ZMA) was incorporated into ethylene-propylene diene rubber(EPDM) by direct mixing of the metal salt with the rubber or was in-situ prepared in the rubber matrix through neutralization reaction of zinc oxide(ZnO) and methacrylic acid(MAA). Tensile and tear tests showed that ZMA had a great reinforcing effect for the EPDM. It was also found that ZMA reinforced EPDM vulcanizates can retain their mechanical properties under thermo-oxidative aging. Moreover the incorporation of ZMA induces a substantial improvement in the adhesive strength of the EPDM onto aluminum substrate. The reinforcing effect and an enhancement in adhesion was greatly manifested when the ZMA is in-situ formed with an excess amount of ZnO. The extraordinary improvement in the properties is supposed to be related with the formation of ionic crosslink as well as the degree of dispersion or ZMA domain in the rubber matrix.

  • In this study, double bond, unsaturated group was introduced to the main chain of EVA by chemically treating EVA, nondiene polymer. Benzene sulfonic acid, ENB and DCPD were used as a third element. Also, from blending CR and SBR, conventional synthetic rubber we prepared vulcanizates and examined their physical properties. The datum lead to the following conclusion that some problems were modified; limited temperature in use and mechanical properties like hardness, tensile strength, tensile stress, and elongation rate of thermoplastic EVA, keeping the following advantages of original EVA; green strength, injection molding by Pressure, adhesion, tackiness, dimensional stability, and ozone resistance, etc. It is expected that continuous research of the modification between nondiene and diene polymer will improve what were shown disadvantages in synthetic polymer; processing, oxidation resistance, and adhesion. In addition, it will be possible to continue process of rubber products by utilizing possible fluidity for fusion of EVA.

  • This study was related with the effect of elevated temperature on the tensile strength of edge-cut samples. There was a different tensile strength behavior of uncut samples and pre-cut samples under different test temperatures. Tensile strength of uncut sample decreases with increasing test temperature. When pro-cut size(C) is larger than critical cut size($C_{cr}$), tensile strength or pre-cut specimen at $80^{\circ}C$ is higher than that of pre-cut specimen at room temperature (RT). Test specimens under $80^{\circ}C$ condition exhibited more secondary cracks at the crack tip region compared to room temperature conditions. However, secondary cracks of pre-cut specimens are not clearly developed at $110^{\circ}C$. Differences in tensile strength induced by different test temperature seem to be responsible for the strain-induced crystallization and micro-cracking patterns.

  • The ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends with acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) were prepared by mechanical mixing method. Mooney viscosity, cure behaviors, compression set and dynamic mechanical properties were subsequently examined. Dynamic characteristics of the entire blends determined from a Rheovibron generally showed two glass transitions (T'$_{g}$s), -43$^{\circ}C$ and -4$^{\circ}C$ for NBR and EPDM, respectively. The tan $\delta$ peak monotonically shifted toward the higher temperature with increasing NBR content. It was also found that the optimum cure time was significantly decreased with loading of NBR.

  • In vulcanizates of NR/SBR blending compounds, the physical properties decrease as the contents of SBR increase for the most part. but the abrasives showed reverse performance. However, since these conditions enough satisfy the requirements of tread, carcass and sidewall of tire, we found it was possible to take use of the quantity of SBR contained high on tire manufacturing.

  • After imposing a large pre-strain, anisotropy increases with increasing residual extension ratio. Gums have very low residual extension ratio and exhibit little anisotropy, while black filled SBR and especially sulfur-cured carbon black filled NR have large set and anisotropy. For carbon black filled rubber, samples subjected to tensile loading in perpendicular to the pre-strain direction have the same stress-strain curves shape as the sample without pre-strain (=isotropic samples), but slightly lower modulus. However, compared to isotropic or perpendicular directional samples to pre-strain direction, samples subjected to tensile loading in parallel to the pre-strain direction show low stress at low deformation, but have high stiffness at high deformation. Normalized anisotropy changes with strain. The normalized anisotropy for various deformations is a linear function of residual extension ratio.

  • The characteristics of IR and IR blended elastomers, for footwear by means of blending with NR and SBR, have been studied. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The mastication of IR was almost not required, where as NR and SBR are necessary. Therefore mixing time was much reduced because of speedy filler feeding. 2. Disadvantage of low Mooney viscosity was covered by blending with NR and SBR, and by loading filler. Superior flow property in comparison to other polymers was worthy and valuable in providing formulas for mould flow, 3. The elongation property of green stocks and vulcanizates was shown smooth surface for extruded and calendered stocks, and facilitated fabrication processes. 4. Because of slow vulcanization, IR is required to control vulcanization time by adding proper accelerators. This property, in turn, made possible to improve the storing stability of green stocks by controlling scorch time.

  • The purpose for this study is to examine the vulcanization characteristics, especially the damping, elastic modulus and viscous modulus properties of filler 50phr filled NR compounds and to find out the compounds which can be used as damping materials in industry. For this study, compounds were prepared with filler filled compounding formula. Their vulcanization characteristics, elastic modulus, viscous modulus and damping properties were examined by mean of the rheometrics dynamic spectrometer. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The elastic modulus values of the maxium under the condition of 1Hz frequency, showed the order as follows, $HAF>Silica>FEF>GPF>SRF>Clay>CaCO_3\;coated>CaCO_3$. 2. The damping values of the maxium under the condition of 1Hz frequency, showed the order as follows $Silica>HAF>FEF>GPF>SRF>Clay>CaCO_3\;coated>CaCO_3$.
