  • Effects of type and loading level of process aids on the rheological and mechanical properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compound were investigated. Five commercial grades of process aids composed of fatty acids and their various derivatives such as metal salts, esters, alcohols and amides were selected. The reduction in Mooney and shear viscosities was higher for metal salt-type process aids but lower for the process aids containing high molecular weight fatty acid alcohols and esters with increasing the loading of process aids. Tensile modulus generally decreased, while heat-build-up increased with increased process aids content. No considerable effect was observed for ulimate properties such as tensile strength and elongation at break.

  • This paper introduced a new preparation method of a composite rubber by mixing BR (butadiene rubber) and CIIR (chloro-isobutyl rubber) for the purpose of improving frictional property of BR. Since BR has high abrasion and low frictional properties, its frictional property needs to be enhanced in order to be used as an outsole of a sport shoe. Such enhancement was difficult to achieve by simple blending of CIIR. In here, CIIR was added into BR matrix after CIIR was pre-crosslinked for a time period, and both high frictional and high abrasion resistance properties were achieved. Our experiments showed that the composite rubber blend of 60% of BR and 40% of pre-crosslinked CIIR had desired BR's frictional and abrasion resistance properties for sport shoes.

  • It is well known that EPDM(ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber has inherently excellent resistance to the weathering, ozone, heat, cold and moisture, whereas crosslinked IIR (isobutylene isoprene divlnyl benzene terpolymer) shows proper resistance to the water and gas permeation. Various characteristics of EPDM blend with crosslinked IIR such as curing characteristics, mechanical properties, dispersion of minor component and gas impermeability were explored. The optimum curing time $(t_{90})$ examined with peroxide was decreased by adding small amount of crosslinked IIR to the EPDM rubber. Mechanical properties of blends such as tensile strength, hardness and elongation at break were enhanced by increasing EPDM content. These results might be explained with the affinity of carbon black to the EPDM rubber. On the other hand, the physical properties were not changed significantly after aging, and the increase of crosslinked IIR fraction caused the decrease of compression set to small rate. EPDM rubber shows different behavior with crosslinked IIR in oxygen permeability. By adding 30wt.% crosslinked IIR to the EPDM rubber, the resistance to the oxygen permeation was improved up to three times than that of pure EPDM rubber. Conclusively, EPDM blend containing 30wt.% crosslinked IIR might be commercially applied to the o-ring and electric parts because of its proper resistance to the weathering, ozone and oxygen permeability.

  • The dynamic characteristics of natural rubber bearings, which are used as isolator, are dependent on the main rubber's dynamic behaviors and nonlinear properties. Rubber materials tend to undergo an aging process under the influence of mechanical or environmental factors, so they inevitably end up facing damage. A main cause of aging like this is known to be oxidization, which occurs through the heat of reaction at high temperatures. Accordingly, in this study an accelerated thermal aging test was carried out in order to compare the characteristic values of the bearings before and after thermal aging occurs. As a result of this experiment, it was found that a thermal aging phenomenon could have some effects on shear stiffness, energy absorption, and equivalent damping coefficients of the bearings. Furthermore, a deterioration in the dynamic properties of the natural rubber bearings caused by the thermal aging was applied to an actual bridge and then the effects of such thermal aging on the seismic performance of the bridge were also compared and analyzed based on numerical analysis. As a result of this analysis, it was found that the changes in the basic properties of the natural rubber bearings caused by the thermal aging bring only a minor effect on the seismic performance of bridges.

  • ${\gamma}$-Glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy slilane, CTBN rubber(carboxyl terminated butadiene acrylonitrile rubber) and GMA(glycidyl methacrylate) were reacted with the surface of silica one by one in existence of TEA(triethylamine) or BPO(benzoyl peroxide). The amount of reactant was 2.5~5.8% of treated silica weight. The treated silica was mixed with epoxy resin and MTHPA(methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride) in the range of 0~60% (wt. %) of total component. The flexural and thermal properties were tested for cured products. In filler content 35~55%, the using of silica treated with silane/rubber or silane/rubber/vinyl represented 25% higher flexural strength, 5% lower flexural modulus and 13% higher than mixing liquid rubber 3% with epoxy resin containing untreated silica.

  • In this study, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate-styrene-butadiene terpolymer (DEAEMA-SBR), in which diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) was introduced to the SBR molecule as a third monomer, was synthesized by cold emulsion polymerization. It is expected that amine group introduced to a rubber molecule would improve dispersion of silica by the formation of hydrogen bond (or ionic coupling) between the amine group and silanol groups of silica surface. The chemical structure of DEAEMA-SBR was analyzed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Then, various properties of DEAEMA-SBR/silica composite such as crosslink density, bound rubber content, abrasion resistance, and mechanical properties were evaluated. As a result, bound rubber content and crosslink density of DEAEMA-SBR/silica compound were higher than those of the SBR 1721 composite. Abrasion resistance and moduli at 300% elongation of the DEAEMA-SBR/silica composite were better than those of SBR 1721 composite due to the high bound rubber content and crosslink density. These results are attributed to high affinity between DEAEMA-SBR and silica. The proposed study suggests that DEAEMA-SBR can help to improve mechanical properties and abrasion resistance of the tire tread part.

  • Rubber seat is extensively used to reduce the vibration of machine or structure. Over the years an enormous effort has been put into developing procedures to provide properties of rubber material for design function. However, there are still a lot of difficulties to analyze static characteristics of rubber components with hyper elasticity and nonlinear large deformation. In this paper material property is obtained by strain-stress curve using a tension test. Mooney-Rivlin Coefficients are gotten by fitting strain-stress curve. The visco-elastic characteristics of refrigerator rubber mount is determined by using ANSYS. And to minimize the rubber stiffness, the rubber seat shape optimization is performed.

  • Rubber materials are extensively used in various machine design application, mainly for vibration/shock/noise control devices. Over the years an enormous effort has been put into developing procedures to provide properties of rubber material for design function. However, there are still a lot of difficulties in the understanding of dynamic characteristics of the rubber components in compression. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of rubber materials for anti-vibration under compression were investigated. Dynamic and static tests for rubber material with 3 different hardness were performed. In dynamic tests, non-resonance method, impedance method, was used to obtain the complex modulus(storage modulus and loss factor) and the effects of static pre-strain on the dynamic characteristics were investigated. Also, a relation equation between linear dynamic and nonlinear static behavior of rubber material was discussed and its usefulness to predict their combined effects was investigated.

  • The effect of curing temperature increase and sulfur amount added were studied with natural and synthetic rubbers. Also, the effects of TMTD, MBTS and mixture of zinc soaps of high molecular fatty acids added to natural rubber were investigated respectively. The experimental results showed that, in the case of the conventional curing ($145^{\circ}C$), natural rubber, compared with synthetic rubber, gave higher values in elongation, tensile strength, cure rate, and lower values in modulus change. But, at high temperature curing ($180^{\circ}C$), natural rubber showed faster reversion rate, and higher heat build-up compared to synthetic rubber, than in the conventional curing. Also, natural rubber produced at high temperature showed severe degradation in hardness and tensile strength before heat-aging as well as in hardness, modulus and tensile strength after heat-aging. Improved reversion effect was obtained with natural rubber either by blending mixture of zinc soaps of high molecular acids or by applying semi-efficient vulcanization system.
