  • Separation process of heavy minerals was performed with sand from Dunjang beach of Jaeundo, Shinangun, Chonnam, and the feasibility study separating heavy minerals was carried out, and their properties were studied. Samples were selected in three parts, which were upper part, middle part and lower part, with depth. Samples of heavy mineral groups separated with the spiral separator were chosen as starting materials, and they were separated with 3 times of table separation. Heavy minerals presenting in this area were ilmenite, zircon, rutile, anatase, monazite, and xenotime. In the results of 3 times of table separation, minor content of quartz, orthoclase, albite and muscovite were existed as gangue minerals. Accordingly, we concluded that additional specific gravity separation was needed. In the results of separation of heavy minerals by hand picking, it was confirmed that heavy minerals had various genesis because of their various roundness and color.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the difference of semantic network about sedimentary environment between science gifted students and non-gifted students through field trip. The fifteen high school science gifted students and non-gifted students were participated in the field trip for this study. The geological field trip was performed in Chaseokgang, which suitable learning place for sedimentary environments. Data included field trip observation and students' inquiry activity reports. The inquiry activity reports were analyzed using the semantic network analysis method. The results of this study were as follows: First, the semantic network of science gifted students was larger and complex structures than that of the non-gifted students. Second, science gifted students were interpreted that changes of sedimentary environment was connected with the sorting and the roundness. On the other hand, semantic network of non-gifted students were become fragmented because they were not interpreted sedimentary environment related to scientific concepts.

  • Gravels forming part of the base of flexible pavements experience abrasion and crushing as a result of static and dynamic loads. Abrasion takes place when the sharp corners of the particles of gravel are removed as a result of compressive and shear loads. As a result of abrasion, the particles change in shape. Crushing is caused by the fragmentation of the particles into a mixture of many small particles of varying sizes. In this study, the abrasion and crushing of gravels are evaluated experimentally and analytically. The laboratory component of this study involves gravels that were subjected to abrasion and dynamic compression tests. The evaluation of the abrasion and crushing experienced by the gravel was carried out using fractals. In this study, the fractal dimension concept from fractal theory is used to evaluate: (a) the changes in shape, and (b) the crushing (fragmentation) of the original particles of gravel. It was determined that the fractal dimension of the profile of the particles decreased as a result of abrasion. With respect to crushing, the fragmentation fractal dimension was found to increase with the degree of breakage of the gravel. To understand the influence of crushing on the permeability of the gravels, the hydraulic conductivity of the gravels was measured before and after crushing. The hydraulic conductivity of the gravels was found to decrease with an increase in their level of crushing. Also, changes in the angle of friction of the granular materials as a result of abrasion was calculated using the Krumbein's roundness chart. The angle of friction of the granular materials was found to decrease as a result of abrasion.

  • This study aimed to compare complete ruptured tendon healing between two different repair methods using the Achilles tendon of New Zealand white rabbits. Thoracolumbar fascia (TF) padded Kessler suture, polypropylene mesh (PM) padded Kessler suture, and Kessler suture only were performed on the completely transected lateral gastrocnemius tendon, and biomechanical and histologic characteristics were assessed after 8 weeks. For biomechanical assessment, the tensile strength of each repaired tendon was measured according to the established methods. For histomorphometric analysis, hematoxylin and eosin staining for general histology, and Masson's trichrome (MT) staining for collagen fibers, Alcian blue (AB) staining for proteoglycans were performed and analyzed. Significant increases in tensile strength with remarkable decreases in the abnormalities against nuclear roundness, cell density, fiber structure, and fiber alignment and significant decreases in the mean number of infiltrated inflammatory cells and AB-positive proteoglycan-occupied regions with increases in MT-positive collagen fiber-occupied regions were demonstrated in the Kessler suture with PM or TF padding groups as compared to those of the Kessler suture group. Both of PM and TF provided potent tensile strength and supported healing with the evidence of histological examinations. This means that augmentation with PM is useful for repairing a completely ruptured Achilles tendon, without additional surgery for autograft material harvesting.

  • Coastal terrace was developed at 7.2m height near Shinchon village in Geoje Island. It is located on the east side of southern coast in Korean Peninsula, where sea-level changes caused by ebb and flow of the tide, embayment are relatively low. Due to the breccia layer by mass-movement, dark grayish clayey formation, marine origin's rounded gravel are deposited sequentially in a cross-section of coastal terrace, so it provides a good example which understand Holocene sea level changes to determine the effect on the various sedimentary environments. For the purpose of identifying the morphogenetic process, Grain size, Roundness, XRD, AMS dating analysis was attempted. As a result, after last glacial age, Holocene sea level rise to +5.6m(4,740±100yrs BP). At that time, various geomorphological features are considered to be formed.

  • The Sinyangri Formation crops out in the vicinity of the Seongsan Peninsula, Cheju Island. Based on sedimentary structures, texture and composition, the lithologic sequence has been classified, in ascending stratigraphic order, into three lithofacies: parallel laminated sandstone facies (Facies I): conglomerate facies(Facies Il); and cross stratified sandstone facies (F acies Ill). Wedge-to-parallel, seaward-inclined in low angle less than 10$^{\circ}$lamina -sets with alternations of coarseand fine-grained sediments in the Facies I are the characteristic sedimentary structures in the foreshore depositional environment. Grains of this faciesare well sorted with good roundness compared with the other two facies, partly showing inverse graded bedding. Facies II,largely composed of claset-supported,very poorly-sorted conglomerates, does not pinch out but occurs continuously along the Sinyangri beach.Interstitial spaces between the clasts are mostly infilled with volcanic-ash and small amounts of well-rounded shell fragments.Maximum bed thickness as well as the size of imbedded basaltic clasts decreases to the south(toward Sinyangri). Large clasts with parallel lamination originated from the underlying Facies i,are generally elongated parallel to the bedding plane and display no systematic horizontal variations in size indicative of in-situ clasts. In view of the facts above it seems that large gravels from the basaltic rocks are transgressive lag conglomerates which are partly affected by the combination of longshore currents and propagating wave.Local occurrence of cross-strata dipping toward the south in the upper part of Facies IIreinforces the evidence of the action of longshore currents. Facies IIIis characterized by bidirectional trough cross-starifiction and wave ripples associated with the upper shoreface(surfzone) environments. In summary, the Sinyangri Formation represents the depositional environments of foreshore to upper shoreface truncated by disconformity between Facies Iand II.

  • 135 and 136 pine cones were sampled from age class of II to VI Korean pine trees for the study of their physical properties in 1991 and 1992, respectively. The length, width, weight, volume, and the largest projected area of cones were measured, and the specific gravity, apparent volume ratio sphericity, and roundness were calculated. Regression analysis were performed for the weight, volume, and projected area to the cone length and width. The length, and major and minor diameters of the cone stalks were measured and analyzed. 1. The range of the length of cone stalks was 0 to 47.3mm. The average length of stalks were 9mm ('91) and 10mm('92), respectively. Cross section of the stalks was ellipse with average major and minor diameters of 9.1mm and 10.1mm, and 8.6 and 8.7mm in 91 and 92, respectively. 2. The length of pine cones distributed from 8cm to 17cm and the average length were about 13cm('91, '92). The width varied from 5cm to 9.5cm and the average width were 6.7cm('91) and 6.9cm('92). The ratios of the length to the width were 0.56('91) and 0.65('91) and the shape of the cones were found to be ellipse with minor diameter of 1/2 to 2/3 of the major diameter. 3. The roundnesses and sphericity of cones were 0.74 and 0.75('91), 0.63 and 0.67('92), respectively. The average of the largest projected area of cones were $85.3cm^2$('91) and $93.1cm^2$('92) and the criterion areas were $71.0cm^2$ and $74.5cm^2$, respectively. 4. Cone weights were from 83g to 467g('91 and '92) and averages were 186g('91) and 220g('92). The average specific gravities were 0.89 and 0.96('91 and '92). The true volumes were $212cm^2$('91) and $230cm^2$('92), and the average bulk volume was $321cm^2$('91, '92). The average apparent volume ratios of cones were 35% ('91) and 28% ('92), respectively. 5. The weight and the volume were proportional to the length of the cone multiplied by the width squred and the largest projected area was proportional to the length multiplied by the width of cones.

  • In recent years, printing paper with a function of information delivery and aesthetic value has attracted a great attention with increasing market demand for coated paper that is capable of high quality printing. The coated paper for inkjet printing with high-quality of photorealistic grades requires the coating layer with a good wettability and porous surface structure in order to improve the printability of ink. In this study, the coated paper was prepared using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and surface treated nano silica sol with silane coupling agent. It was confirmed that the coating layer with surface treated nano silica sol showed a uniform pore distribution and flat surface roughness. Glossiness of the prepared printing paper was similar to that of commercial high quality photo paper. Especially, the coated paper with surface treated nano silica sol showed improved printability with excellent roundness of the printed dot of ink. These results indicates that the coating layer with excellent wettability and uniform pore distribution can be formed by using the nano-silica particles with improved dispersibility through the surface treatment of the silane coupling agent.

  • To improve the newly designed HKS(hinge kit system) in common refrigerators, it was investigated the new robust methodologies. There were the study of failure modes, mechanisms in the marketplace, and the design parameters of HKS with various improvements using accelerated life testing. Based on the claimed marketplace product returns and 1st ALT reproduction, the fracturing and cracking occur in the housing of the HKS. The missing design parameters of the failed HKS in the design phase of the refrigerator was the housing hinge kit structure. The corrective action plans are the modifications of the housing hinge kit structure from the open supporting to all supporting structure. Based on 2nd ALTs, the fracturing and cracking occur in the torsion shaft. The missing design parameter was the roundness of torsion shaft. After a sequence of ALT testing, the levels of the missing design parameters were setup. The yearly failure rate and B1 life of the redesigned HKS, based on the results of ALT, were over 0.01 percent and 10 years, respectively. The parameter design through the inspection of the failed product, load analysis, and three rounds of ALT, was very effective in the new robust design methodologies of the mechanical system and this method can be applied to other design system.

  • This study examined the factors for sorting miscellaneous cereal crops using a rice-sorting device by analyzing the physical characteristics according to the moisture content. The initial moisture contents of miscellaneous cereal were 16.3, 19.8, and 16.5%, respectively. The samples were used in the experiment after drying to five levels. The width, length, and area of the samples increased with increasing moisture content except for the roundness, and all the prediction models were developed with a first-order linear equation. The bulk density of Italian millet and sorghum increased with increasing moisture content, whereas the bulk density of common millet was unaffected by the change in moisture content. The terminal velocity of the samples increased with increasing moisture content, and a first-order linear equation was used to develop the prediction models. The measured physical properties of the miscellaneous cereal crops based on the changes in the moisture content could be expressed using a first-order experimental model equation. Therefore, the rice-sorting device could be applied to the terminal velocity, but the other device applying the geometrical characteristics and bulk density was required to change the design of the process depending on the type of grain.
