  • An abnormal storm by the typhoon of RUSA in 2002th year was broken out with tremendous flood demages and inundations on the basin of Chogangcheon located in the upper middle part of Guem river's upstream. This flood could not be engaged because it was so big that the stage engaging Songcheon station stuck to Songcheon bridge was destroyed by submerging. In this study the quantity of the flood was calculated by use of Manning's equation and suitable roughness coefficient was suggested.

  • The effect of characteristic of surface roughness and roughness patterns on friction was studied experimentally in boundary lubrication with reciprocating tribometer. Roughness was changed from Ra=0.2($\mu\textrm{m}$)to Ra=1.2($\mu\textrm{m}$). Three roughness pattern-transverse, oblique, longitudinal- were tested for various load and velocity. The experimental results show that the scuffing resistance of surfaces with transversal roughness pattern is higher than that of surface with longitudinal and obliq pattern. under the conditions of the roughness values of Ra=0.2, 0.5,1.0 and 1.2. surfacer roughness (Ra) was decreased with the normal load increased before scuffing occurred. oblique pattern and longitudinal pattern with Ra=0.2 and Ra=1.0 was higher scuffing load under low sliding velocity, but with Ra=0.5 was higher scuffing load under high sliding velocity.

  • The magnetic abrasive polishing (MAP), for online monitoring with AE sensor attachment, was performed in this study. To predict the surface roughness after the magnetic abrasive polishing of NAK80, the signal data acquired from the AE sensor were analyzed. A dimensionless coefficient, which consisted of average of AErms and standard deviation of AE signal, was defined as a characteristic of the MAP and a prediction model was obtained using least square method. A neural network, which had multiple input parameters from AE signals and polishing conditions, was applied for predicting the surface roughness. As a result of this study, it was seen that there was very close correlation between the AE signal and the surface roughness in the MAP. And then on-line prediction of the surface roughness after the MAP of the NAK80 was possible by the developed prediction model.

  • In accordance with the high precision of mechanical elements, it has been required to high precision in surface roughness measurement and, therefore, stylus tip radius is manufa- ctured less than 2 .mu. m through ion sputter machining. In this experiment, by suing ion sputter machined stylus pf fine tip, radius and lapping machined stylus, surface roughness of standard specimens, silicon wafer were measured and then Rmax, Ra, RMS value were investi- gatedaccording to the variation of tip radius of stylus. As a result, measuring error due to the variation of stylus tip radius in surface roughness measurement was decreased by using ion sputter machined stylus and also the measuring accuracy was improved. And the measuring variation of Ra, RMS calculated from correlation coefficient lager than 0.9 on the wave of short period and amplitude using ion sputter machined stylus of fine tip radius.

  • Revetment Mattress/Filter is the porous structure filled fillers in meshed structure so that it cail use the fillers of various sizes and form various pores. The porous structure of the Mattress/Filter increases drainage so that it decreases the energy and erosion of flow therefore the tractive force is decreased and the erosion of revetment is mitigated. The filler of Mattress/Filter uses gravels, waste concretes and slags so that the surface is rough and the roughness coefficient increases and the increase of the roughness coefficient decreases flow velocity and tractive force. On the other hand Mattress/Filter and vegetation are combined so that the increase of roughness coefficient and flow velocity still more progress therefore the effect of decrease of tractive force is increased after a few months have passed since the Mattress/Filter is constructed so that the vegetation is developed and be stabilized. The vegetation channel of Mattress/Filter is set tip and the inspection comes into operation by varing flowrate and vegetation spacing to examine these characters of the Mattress/Filter The coefficient of flow velocity U/U*' is decreased exponentially as vegetation esity aH' or $\lambda$ is increased and the coefficient of friction f is increased as vegetation desity aH' is increased but decreased as the coefficient of flow velocity U/U*' is increased. The effective tractive force $F_0$ is decreased exponentially as the vegetation desity aH' is increased. From the inspection the results are obtained that the porous and vegetation structure of the revetment Mattress/Filter system increases the coefficient of friction of revetment so that flow velocity and effective are decreased therefore greatly contributes the stability of the revetment.

  • Direct shear tests were carried out on the rock joints and artificial discontinuities to investigate the influence of joint roughness on the shear strength and deformation behaviour. Single direct shear testing apparatus used in experiment was designed and manufactured. Its capacity is 200 tons of shear load, 20 tons of normal load and 50$\textrm{cm}^2$ of maximum shear area. Test samples were cement mortar with artificial discontinuity and sandstone with natural joint. Peak shear strength was increased as joint roughness or normal stress was increased, especially, linearly increased with roughness angle in cement mortar. If joint roughness angle was constant at low normal stress, shear strength was not affected by width and height of joint roughness in cement mortar. Peak shear strengths obtained from tests were larger than the values calculated by Barton's equation, and shear stiffness was increased with joint roughness coefficient.

  • The roughness of substrate concrete interfaces before new concrete placement has a major effect on the interface bond behaviour. However, there are challenges associated with the consistency of the final roughness interface prepared using conventional roughness preparation methods which influences the interface bond performance. In this study, five quantitative interface roughness textures with different roughness tooth angles, depths, and tooth distribution were created to ensure consistency of interface roughness and to evaluate the bond behaviour at a precast and new concrete interface using the splitting tensile test, slant shear test, and double-shear test. In addition, smooth interface specimens and two separate the pitting interface roughness were also utilized. Obtained results indicate that the quantitative roughness has a very limited effect on the interface tensile bond strength if no extra micro-roughness or bonding agent is added at the interface. The roughness method however causes enhanced shear bond strength at the interface. Increased tooth depth improved both the tensile and shear bond strength of the interfaces, while the tooth distribution mainly influenced the shear bond strength. Major failure modes of the test specimens include interface failure, splitting cracks, and sliding failure, and are influenced by the tooth depth and tooth distribution. Furthermore, the interface properties were obtained and presented while a comparison between the different testing methods, in terms of bond strength, was performed.

  • The friction coefficients of the rubber for clutch master cylinder were experimentally measured in this study. The cylindrical rubber samples for primary cup-seal and secondary cup-seal were tested against the aluminum or the steel plates of master cylinder housing under the various conditions of brake oil temperatures and normal loads. Dry sliding friction coefficients were also measured under various load conditions. The test revealed following results. First, the friction coefficient under fluid lubrication condition in general decreases, as the oil temperature or normal load increases. Second, the steel plate of low surface roughness yielded comparatively low friction coefficient on the range of 0.30∼0.67. On the other hand, the aluminum plate of high surface roughness yielded high friction coefficient on the range of 0.31∼1.15. Third, the friction coefficient of dry surface contact decreases as the normal load increases. This is contrary to the general principle of friction coefficient between metal plates.

  • This is a study on large-scale rock joint roughness measurements using LIDAR (light detection and ranging) and the Split-FX point cloud processing software. The large-scale rock Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) is calculated using the maximum amplitude of joint asperities over the profile length on large-scale Joint surfaces of rock. As the profile length increases, JRC decreases due to scale-effects of rock specimens and is non-stationary. Also JRC shows anisotropy depending on the profile direction. The profile direction is measured relative to either dip or strike of the large-scale joint.
