  • This paper presents a design of novel 2-phase 6/5 switched reluctance motor (SRM) for an air-blower application. This type of motor is suitable for the applications that require high speed and only one directional rotation as air-blower. The desired air-blower is unidirectional application, and requires a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone. In order to get a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone during phase commutation, asymmetric inductance characteristic with non-uniform air-gap is considered. The proposed motor can be operated at any rotor position. The proposed 6/5 SRM uses short flux path technique that achieved by means of winding configuration and lamination geometry. The purpose of short flux path is to reduce the core loss and the absorption MMF in the stator. The proposed 2-phase 6/5 SRM is verified by finite element method (FEM) analysis and Matlab-Simulink. In order to verify the design, a prototype of the proposed motor was manufactured for practical system.

  • A prototype of Flywheel Energy Storage System with high Tc superconducting bearings was fabricated and tested to verify its applicability for the energy industry. The moment of inertia of assembled wheel with rotor magnets is about 1.072${\times}$10$^{-1}$ Kg-m$^2$. The wheel was designed to withstand its integrity up to the rotation speed of 20,000 rpm. YBCO bulk superconductors prepared by seed growth method were used as bearing to levitate and stabilize the rotating wheel. High speed rotation of the flywheel without mechanical contact was achieved by using specially designed Halbach type motor. The flywheel system showed very high stability during test operation performed up to the speed of about 10,000rpm. The energy loss measured by free decay test performed between 9,300 rpm and 7,000 rpm was calculated as about 45 W.

  • The effects of guide vanes and tip clearances on the characteristics nf axial flow fans are investigated both computationally and experimentally. Performance test of fans carried out in full scale shows considerable effects of tip clearance between rotor tip and duct on the characteristics of fans. The tested results are compared with the computation based on the finite volume method to solve the Navier-Stoke equations with $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The comparison shows good agreements between experimental and computational results. In addition, the effects of shape of guide vanes are numerically studied. The results show that increased volume of separated region around the guide vane reduces the recovery of tangential component of kinetic energy in the wake, resulting in loss of efficiency

  • A hydrogen cooling method is used in a power generator for removing the unnecessary heat due to the windage loss of a rotor and the joule heat of a stator. A MEA (Membrane Electrolyte Assembly) hydrogen generator has been developed and applied as a hydrogen supplying system for the cooling of a 350MW power generator. As a field application result, the average potential of eleven cells and the voltage efficiency were measured 2.26V/cell and 65.4% (Higher Heating Value) respectively at the hydrogen pressure of 6 Bar, the hydrogen flow rate of 9.1L/min, and the current of 150A.

  • In this paper, the feasibility of applying a position sensorless control technique to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) is practically evaluated. The proposed position estimator has a straightforward structure with properties that combines the model and the saliency tracking-based rotor position estimation for interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs). The proposed method can be used in the event of sensor loss or sensor recovery to sustain continuity of operations. The developed system takes into account the estimated position transition between two distinct sensorless methods. The transition is enhanced by introducing a synchronized transition algorithm based on a single tracking observer. Extensive experimental results are presented to verify the principles and show a reliable estimation performance over the entire speed range including standstill under 150% load conditions.

  • In this investigation, the aerodynamic performance evaluation of a 1MW class blade has been performed with the purpose of the verification of target output and its clear understanding of flow field using CFD commercial code, ANSYS FLUENT. Before making progress of CFD analysis the HERACLES V2.0 software based on blade element momentum theory was applied for confirmation of quick and approximate performance in the preliminary stage. The blade was designed to produce the target output of a 1MW class at a rated wind speed of 12m/s, which consists of five different airfoils such as FFA W-301, DU91-W250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418 and NACA 63415 from hub to tip. The mechanical power by CFD is approximately 1.195MW, which is converted into the electrical power of 1.075MW if the system loss is considered to be 0.877.

  • Cycle simulation of Ground Source Heat Pump[GSHP] system was carried out to determine the design specification of basic components such as turbo compressor and heat exchangers. Part load operation characteristics of the designed GSHP system was estimated using the compressor and heat exchanger performance data. A 50RT class turbo compressor for GSHP system is now under development, in which R134a refrigerant is adopted as working fluid. The compressor with variable cascade diffusers is designed to work both in cooling and heating modes so that it can actively keep up with the climate change with high efficiency. The normal running speeds of the compressor are 59000rpm for heating mode and 70000rpm for tooling mode respectively. It has two identical impellers at both ends of the rotor so as to minimize aero-induced thrust force effectively. GSHP system was coupled with a vortical type heat exchanger, and heat gain and heat loss from ground were evaluated per a bore hole. For the optimal integration of the heat pump system, its header for circulating fluid was combined with the ground heat exchangers in parallel and series configuration.

  • In this paper, a study on the noise reduction in a mobile fuel cell system is presented. Among various fuel cell systems around 20W capacities designed for mobile electronic devices, the active direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) systems have been recently developed. In such systems, the primary noise source is the air pump which provides sufficient air flow ($5{\sim}6$ liter/min) for electrochemical reaction with methanol fuel while the noise contributions from other auxiliary parts are relatively small. Especially, the discrete noise tones generated by the air pump are dominant and those frequency peaks related to the rotor harmonics are needed to be suppressed by a silencer. Therefore. the Herschel/Quinke (HQ) tubes, which use the out-of-phase cancellation of acoustic waves propagating through direct and indirect pathways, are applied to the inlet of the air pump. Performance of noise reduction with HQ silencer is analytically estimated by calculating the transmission. The length and number of thin HQ tubes are optimized to decrease the radiated noise. As a result, the sound pressure level could be successfully reduced by about 10 dB after applying three serially connected HQ tubes.

  • In this study, a prototype remote controlled weeder using solar module was developed and the evaluations of weeding, side walking and weeding performance were conducted to see if actual application was feasible in the paddy field. When traveling, the loss electric current was 8 to 15 A depending on operating and soil conditions. The average traveling speed was 0.25 m/s and the average slippage was 18%. When it side walked row by row, electric current consumption was 7 A on the average. When wheel rotors line went initially up and last down, electric current consumption was 12 to 15 A due to soil resistance. Electric current consumption when shifting wheel rotors line was less than 5 A due to no resistance. Field efficiency was 105 min/10a based on the test field. Operation was able to be done for 4.16 hours continually by 52 AH battery based on 300 W average maximum power consumption and 4.6 hours under sunny day considering solar module.
