  • 3D reconstruction of a human face from an image sequence remains an important problem in computer vision. We propose a method, based on a factorization algorithm, that reconstructs a 3D face model from short image sequences exhibiting rotational motion. Factorization algorithms can recover structure and motion simultaneously from one image sequence, but they usually require that all feature points be well tracked. Under rotational motion, however, feature tracking often fails due to occlusion and frame out of features. Additionally, the paucity of images may make feature tracking more difficult or decrease reconstruction accuracy. The proposed 3D reconstruction approach can handle short image sequences exhibiting rotational motion wherein feature points are likely to be missing. We implement the proposal as a reconstruction method; it employs image sequence division and a feature tracking method that uses Active Appearance Models to avoid the failure of feature tracking. Experiments conducted on an image sequence of a human face demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Molecular reorientation of oblate symmetric top molecules in the presence of internal rotation is investigated and an analytic expression for the spin-rotational relaxation rate of a nucleus attached to the internal rotor is obtained as a function of the internal angular momentum correlation time. The overall reorientation of the symmetric top is treated by the anisotropic rotational diffusion and the internal rotation is assumed to undergo modified extended rotational diffusion. The result is compared with the previous work for the prolate symmetric top molecule and it is shown that both results reduce to the same expression in the spherical top limit.

  • The rotational barriers of thioacetamide (TA) and acetamide (AA) were studied using the ab-initio molecular orbital theory and NMR spectroscopy. The calculated rotational barriers using MP2/6-31G**//MP2/6-31G** for TA was 72.26 kJ/mol and 58.19 kJ/mol for AA, respectively. These results are good agreement with the experimental data. The tendency for the change of structural parameters is consistent with the result of formamide. In both amides, the rotational barrier arises from the pyramidalization of nitrogen. The chemical shifts of both amides are shifted upfield when temperature is raised, which confirms pyramidalization of nitrogen. The lineshape of 1H-NMR spectra of TA shows quintet which is contributed from two triplet spectra. This means that the distribution of electrons around the nitrogen is rather symmetric. Ab-initio calculations of electric field gradient for both amides confirm the above results. The above experimental results are well understood by Keith's view on thioamides, which excludes the contribution of resonance structure and considers the origin of rotational barrier to be the same in both thioamides and in corresponding amides.

  • Experimental tests on cellular beams with sinusoidal openings showed two main failure modes around the openings. They concern the formation of four plastic hinges and the local instability of the sinusoidal part of the opening. In parallel, numerical analysis of the sinusoidal part of the opening revealed the existence of an elastic rotational restraint between the intermediate web-post and the adjacent opening panel. The aim of the present study is to present an approach to quantify this rotational restraint. Through the response surface method, a mathematical model is proposed. It shows a great ability to predict the rotational restraint value as a function of the geometrical parameters of the opening. This model can be used to perform an extensive study with various geometrical configurations of beams with the aim to develop a reliable and realistic analytical model predicting the resistance of the sinusoidal openings.

  • This paper presents manufacturing and evaluation of a non-contact rotational torque measurement system which consists of torque cell, telemeter system, transmitter and receiver coil, transmitter, receiver and telemeter indicator. Static calibration test results show that the system has a maximum uncertaintry of 05% or less. A standar calibration system for rotational torque is used to evaluate the measurement system, As a result, the maximum uncertainty for measuring rotational torque by this system is 2% or less. We may conclude that the measurement system is sufficient to measure rotational torque of shaft in industry.

  • In this paper, a novel polishing tool mechanism with 3-axis compliance is presented, which consists of 2-axis rotational and 1-axis linear compliances in series. The 2-axis rotational compliance mechanism is made up of four cantilever beams for adjusting rotational stiffness and one flexure universal joint at the center for constraining the z-axis deflection. The 2-axis rotational compliance can mechanically adjust the polishing tool to machined surfaces. The polishing press force can be simply controlled by using a linear spring along the z-axis. The 2-axis rotational and 1-axis linear compliance design is decoupled. The stiffness analysis of the 2-axis compliance mechanism was performed based on link compliance matrix and rigid body transformation. A 3-axis polishing tool was designed by configuring the 2-axis compliance mechanism and one linear spring.

  • In order to improve the rotational performances of NC lathe spindle system in high speed range, a new type(Floating-type driven by V-belt)spindle system was optimally designed and experimented. Through the results of the experiments, the rotational performances of the new type spindle system was discussed and compared with the three equivalent conventional lathe spindle systems. The spindle rotational accuracy( radial error motion of spindle axis), the accelation and the temperature rise of the front spindle bearings for the non-cutting operation were considered as the spindle rotational performances. The radial error motion of the spindle axis was measured by applying the modified L.R.L. method. Compared with the equivalent conventional spindle systems, the following results were obtained. (1) The new type spindle system reduces the radial error motion of the spindle axis in high speed range(1800rpm-2000rpm). (2) The new type spindle system reduces the acceleration and the temperature rise of the spindle bearings considerably with increasing the spindle speed. It is also confirmed that, by this new type spindle system, the max. allowable speed can be increased with satisfying the spindle rotational performances.

  • The Rotational/Translational Actuator (RTAC) benchmark problem considers a fourth-order dynamical system involving the nonlinear interaction of a translational oscillator and an eccentric rotational proof mass. This problem has been posed to investigate the utility of a rotational actuator for stabilizing translational motion. In order to experimentally implement any of the model-based controllers proposed in the literature, the values of model parameters are required which are generally difficult to determine rigorously. In this paper, an approach to the least-squares estimation of the parameters of a system is formulated and practically applied to the RTAC system. On the other hand, this paper shows how to model a nonlinear system as a linear uncertain system via nonparametric system identification, in order to provide the information required for linear robust $H_\infty$ control design. This method is also applied to the RTAC system, which demonstrates severe nonlinearities, due to the coupling from the rotational motion to the translational motion. Experimental results confirm that this approach can effectively condense the whole nonlinearities, uncertainties, and disturbances within the system into a favorable perturbation block.

  • High speed machining has become the main issue of metal cutting. Due to increase of the rotational speed of the spindle, problems, such as the run-out errors, reduced stiffness, must be overcome to improve the machining accuracy. In order to solve the problems, it is important to determine the appropriate clamping unit and tooling system. This paper presents an investigation into an evaluation of contact interval which is the interface between spindle taper hole and tool holder shank of the spindle. Finite element analysis is performed by using a commercial code ANSYS according to variation of clamping forces and rotational speeds. This paper proposed fit tolerance in order to evaluate the effects of clamping force and rotational speed on the contact interval in the spindle interface. From the finite element results, it has been shown that the rotational speed rather than clamping force mostly influence on the variation of the contact interval.
