  • This paper concerns the analytical modeling and dynamic analysis of advanced rotating blade structure implemented by a dual approach based on structural tailoring and viscoelastic materials technology. Whereas structural tailoring uses the directionality properties of advanced composite materials, the passive materials technology exploits the damping capabilities of viscoelastic material(VEM) embedded into the host structure. The structure is modeled as a composite thin-walled beam incorporating a number of nonclassical features such as transverse shear, warping restraint, anisotropy of constituent materials, and warping and rotary inertias. The VEM layer damping treatment is modeled by using the Golla-Mushes-McTavish(GHM) method, which is employed to account for the frequency-dependent characteristic o the VEM. The displayed numerical results provide a comprehensive picture of the synergistic implications of the application of both techniques, namely, the tailoring and damping technology on vibration response of thin-walled beam structure exposed to external time-dependent excitations.

  • Heat transfer data are presented which describe characteristics of the transitional thermal boundary layers on the NACA0012 airfoil with upstream wakes. The wakes are generated periodically by circular cylindrical rods which rotate around the airfoil like a squirrel cage. The unsteady wakes simulate those produced by the upstream rotating blade rows in axial turbomachines. The pressure or suction side of the airfoil is also simulated according to the rotating direction of circular rods. As the Reynolds number and the number of rotating rods increase, the boundary layer transition occurs earlier and the Nusselt number increases. The difference of heat transfer coefficient is less on the pressure side than on the suction side. At a constant Reynolds number, the Nusselt number is larger and smaller, respectively, before and after transition as the Strouhal number increases.

  • This paper deals with a theoretical method for the design of a biased asymmetric preswirl stator propulsion system which has been used to increase efficiency by the recovery of a propeller slipstream rotational energy by the counter rotating flow of a stator. In the case of full slow-speed ship, the upward flow is generated at the propeller plane by the after body hull form. The generated upward flow cancells the rotating flow of the propeller at the starboard part while it increases at port part. A biased asymmetric preswirl stator propulsion system consists of three blades at the port and one blade at the starboard which can recover the biased rotating flow effectively. This paper provides the design concept which gives more simple and a high degree of efficiency. The model tests for the designed compound propulsion system will be carried out later.

  • Tube axial fans were designed to provide effective cooling for a personal computer by using $DasignFan^{TM}$ software. With basic input parameters of flow rate, pressure rise, rotating speed, and fan diameter, three dimensional geometry of blade is automatically generated and its performance and overall sound pressure level are predicted. In this steady, the newly developed fans of 60 mm and 80 mm diameters were proved to provide a very promising mode of low noise, compared with manufactured products.

  • The purpose is to evaluate the structural characteristics of 750 mm diameter injection spiral blades under various operating conditions. A fiber-glass reinforced polypropylene material was employed to the injection blades, and mechanical tests on two kinds of glass-reinforced polypropylene were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties and to select a suitable candidate material. Also, three kinds of spiral blade geometries were studied to observe the influence of fixing rods between blades. For this, structural analyses were conducted to understand the role of fixing rods under a range of rotating speed. In addition, modal analysis was performed to confirm the resonance in the operating speed range. One-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis was carried out to know its mechanical integrity under dangerous wind speed conditions. Through this work, the structural characteristics of the proposed spiral blade geometries were studied under various operating conditions, and the requirements of mechanical properties of blades were determined.

  • Wind turbine blades are increasing in magnitude without a proportional increase of stiffness for which reason geometrical and inertial nonlinearities become increasingly important. Often these effects are analysed using a nonlinear truncated expansion in undamped fixed base mode shapes of a blade, modelling geometrical and inertial nonlinear couplings in the fundamental flap and edge direction. The purpose of this article is to examine the applicability of such a reduced-degree-of-freedom model in predicting the nonlinear response and stability of a blade by comparison to a full model based on a nonlinear co-rotating FE formulation. By use of the reduced-degree-of-freedom model it is shown that under strong resonance excitation of the fundamental flap or edge modes, significant energy is transferred to higher modes due to parametric or nonlinear coupling terms, which influence the response and stability conditions. It is demonstrated that the response predicted by such models in some cases becomes instable or chaotic. However, as a consequence of the energy flow the stability is increased and the tendency of chaotic vibrations is reduced as the number of modes are increased. The FE model representing the case of infinitely many included modes, is shown to predict stable and ordered response for all considered parameters. Further, the analysis shows that the reduced-degree-of-freedom model of relatively low order overestimates the response near resonance peaks, which is a consequence of the small number of included modes. The qualitative erratic response and stability prediction of the reduced order models take place at frequencies slightly above normal operation. However, for normal operation of the wind turbine without resonance excitation 4 modes in the reduced-degree-of-freedom model perform acceptable.

  • This paper presents numerical analysis and design optimization of various turbine blade cooling techniques with three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) analysis. The fluid flow and heat transfer have been performed using ANSYS-CFX 11.0. A fan-shaped hole for film-cooling has been carried out to improve film-cooling effectiveness with the radial basis neural network method. The injection angle of hole, lateral expansion angle of hole and ratio of length-to-diameter of the hole are chosen as design variables and spatially averaged film-cooling effectiveness is considered as an objective function which is to be maximized. The impingement jet cooling has been performed to investigate heat transfer characteristic with geometry variables. Distance between jet nozzle exit and impingement plate, inclination of nozzle and aspect ratio of nozzle hole are considered as geometry variables. The area averaged Nusselt number is evaluated each geometry variables. A rotating rectangular channel with staggered array pin-fins has been investigated to increase heat transfer performance ad to decrease friction loss using KRG modeling. Two non-dimensional variables, the ratio of the eight diameter of the pin-fins and ratio of the spacing between the pin-fins to diameter of the pin-fins selected as design variables. A rotating rectangular channel with staggered dimples on opposite walls are formulated numerically to enhance heat transfer performance. The ratio of the dimple depth and dimple diameter are selected as geometry variables.
