  • The equations of motion for rotating contilever beams with a concentrated mass loated in an arbitrary position are derived. For the modeling of the concentrated mass the Dirac delta function is used for the mass density function. Parametric studies are performed with five dimensionless variables ; natural frequencies, angular velocity, hub radius, concentrated mass, and the mass location. The concentrated mass, whereverit may locate, lowers the natural frequencies of a stationaly beam. However, when the beam rotates, the natural frequencies(if they increase or decrease) are dictated by the location of the concentrated mass.

  • The objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of rotating orthotropic axes model in analyzing reinforced concrete planar members under cyclic as well as monotonic loading. The structural members to be addressed are moderately reinforced beams, columns, beam-column joints, and shear walls, whose failure occurs due to compressive crushing after extensive crack propagation, The rotating orthotropic axes model which is usually used for monotonic loading is developed for cyclic loading. With the existing cyclic material models of reinforcing steel and bond-slip, this material model is used for the finite element analysis. For monotonic loading, the analytical results of the rotating orthotropic axes model are compared with reinforced concrete beams which have brittle failure. For Shear wall members under cyclic loading, the analyses are compared with the experiments for the ultimate load capacity, nonlinear deformation, and pinching effect due to crack opening and closing.

  • In the context of finite element method, a computational simulation is presented to study and analyze the dynamic behavior of regularly perforated functionally graded rotating beam for the first time. To investigate the effect of perforation configurations, both regular circular and squared perforation patterns are studied. To explore impacts of graded material distributions, both axial and transverse gradation profiles are considered. The material characteristics of graded materials are assumed to be smoothly and continuously varied through the axial or the thickness direction according the nonlinear power gradation law. A computational finite elements procedure is presented. The accuracy of the numerical procedure is verified and compared. Resonant frequencies, axial displacements as well as internal stress distributions throughout the perforated graded rotating cantilever beam are studied. Effects of material distributions, perforation patterns, as well as the rotating beam speed are investigated. Obtained results proved that the graded material distribution has remarkable effects on the dynamic performance. Additionally, circular perforation pattern produces more softening effect compared with squared perforation configuration thus larger values of axial displacements and maximum principal stresses are detected. Moreover, squared perforation provides smaller values of nondimensional frequency parameters at most of vibration modes compared with circular pattern.

  • This paper presents a reduction method for a straight-line path error of a flexible beam deploying from a rotating rigid hub. Previous studies discussed about only vibration phenomena of flexible beams deploying from rotating hubs; however, this study investigates a vibration reduction of a rotating beam with variable length. The equation of motion and associated boundary conditions are derived for a flexible beam deploying from a rotating rigid hub, and then they are transformed to a variational equation. By applying the Galerkin method, the discretized equations are obtained from the variational equation. Based on the discretized equations, the dynamic responses of a rotating/deploying beam are analyzed when the beam end has a straight line motion. A reduction method for the trajectory error is proposed, using the average length of a rotating/deploying beam. It is shown that the proposed method is able to reduce the residual vibration of a rotating/deploying beam.

  • The stress distribution of a rotating cantilever beam in transient vibration is investigated in this paper. The equations of motion of the rotating bean are derived and numerical results are obtained. The tensile and bending stresses which occur when the beam rotates with the tuned angular speed or passes through the tuned angular speed are obtained. Since those stresses are usually significant during the rotational motion, it is important to estimate them accurately in the design of the rotating structure.

  • The quadratic B-spline finite element method yields mass and stiffness matrices which are half the size of matrices obtained by the conventional finite element method. We solve the free vibration problem of a rotating Rayleigh beam using the quadratic B-spline finite element method. Rayleigh beam theory includes the rotary inertia effects in addition to the Euler-Bernoulli theory assumptions and presents a good mathematical model for rotating beams. Galerkin's approach is used to obtain the weak form which yields a system of symmetric matrices. Results obtained for the natural frequencies at different rotating speeds show an accurate match with the published results. A comparison with Euler-Bernoulli beam is done to decipher the variations in higher modes of the Rayleigh beam due to the slenderness ratio. The results are obtained for different values of non-uniform parameter ($\bar{n}$).

  • In this paper, a semi-analytical method will be discussed for free vibration analysis of rotating beams with variable cross sectional area. For this purpose, the rotating beam is discretized through applying the transfer matrix method and assumed the axial force is constant for each element. Then, the transfer matrix is derived based on Euler-Bernoulli's beam differential equation and applying boundary conditions. In the following, the frequencies of the rotating beam with constant and variable cross sections are determined using the transfer matrix method in several case studies. In order to eliminate numerical difficulties in the transfer matrix method, the Riccati transfer matrix is employed for high rotation speed and high modes. The results are compared with the results of the finite elements method and Rayleigh-Ritz method which show good agreement in spite of low computational cost.

  • Equations of chordwise and flapwise bending motions of pretwisted rotatin cantilever beams are derived. The two motions are coupled to each other due to the pretwist angle of the beam cross section. As the angular speed, hub radius ratio, and pretwist angle vary, the vibration characteristics of the beam change. It is found that engenvalue loci veering phenomena and associated mode shape variations occur between two vibration modes due to the pretwist angle. The effect of the pretwist angle on the critical angular speed is also investigated.

  • A modeling method for the vibration analysis of rotating multi-blade systems considering the coupling stiffness effect is presented in this paper. Blades are assumed as cantilever beams and the coupling stiffness effect originates from disc or shroud between blades. As the angular speed, hub radius ratio, and the coupling stiffness vary, the natural frequencies of the system vary. Numerical results show that the coupling stiffness is very important to estimate the natural frequencies. Along with the natural frequencies, associated mode shapes, critical angular speed, and critical hub radius ratio are obtained through the analysis.

  • The finite element method based on the refined beam theory is applied to the vibration problem of rotation composite box beams. The present beam model includes a number of non-classical structural effects such as transverse shear, warping deformations, geometric non-linearities. The nonlinear finite element equations of motion are obtained from Hamilton's principle. Vibration characteristics versus various parameters such as ply angle, collective pitch angle, pretwist and precone are investigated for rotation box ben and relevant conclusions are outlined.
