The re-examination of morphological and anatomical characters of Laminaria appressirhiza and L. inclinatorhiza collected from different localities in the Sea of Okhotsk was performed. Despite their commercial and ecological importance to the region they have not been comprehensively reviewed since their first description in 1970. Our results show that some original diagnostic key characters (e.g., shape of holdfast, shape of sporangial sori, and dissection of blade) are not stable and have deviations from the type morphology when plants grow in different environments. In L. inclinatorhiza, the sporangial sori development occurred differently to the pattern indicated in original species description as they did not develop simultaneously on both sides of the blade. Instead, the sporangial sori outlines on both sides of the blade did not coincide at first and only became coincident later. Also, a deep-water population of L. inclinatorhiza with an unusual and interesting morphology, growing at depths of 15-25 m on opened rocky coasts in Taujskaya Bay (northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk) was found. The stable diagnostic key characters to distinguish these two species are the cone-like, multilayered, very thick and massive holdfast (in L. inclinatorhiza) and rolled margins of blades, lamellar rosette-like part of thallus, and sporangial sori developing only on one side of the blade (in L. appressirhiza). The ecological characteristics, distribution, and abundance of both species in the Sea of Okhotsk are discussed. Both species are perennial and widely distributed in the region. L. appressirhiza is more often found as a subdominant species among other kelps, forming maximum biomass and density of 7-9 kg and 8-25 plants per $1m^2$, respectively. L. inclinatorhiza sometimes forms local mono-species communities with maximum biomass and density of 10-12 kg and 10-15 plants per $1m^2$, respectively.
Ecological success of introduced species is frequently attributed to the reproductive characters of those species. We examined the relationship between both flowering season and plant size and reproductive characters in two introduced species of Taraxacum, e.g., T. officinale and T.laevigatum. Seventy six plants of T. officinale and 23 plants of T. laevigatum were randomly tagged from a population at the sungshin Women's University in April of 1997. The size and number of vegetative characters such as rosette diameter, leaf number, and the largest leaf length and width were measured for each plant at the onset of flowering. The infructescence was collected continually from each plant before seed dispersal from April to August of 1997. The number of infructescence per plant, and seed number and total seed weight per infructescence were measured. Mean individual seed weight per infructescence was also obtained. T. officinale possessed larger sized, but smaller number of, leaves than T. laevigatum, thereby resulting in no significant difference in total leaf area. There was a trend that vegetatively larger plants in both of these species produced reproductive characters larger in size or greater in number, except for seed number and total seed weight per infructescence in T. laevigatum. All reproductive characters examined in T. officinale decreased toward the end of flowering season. In T. laevigatum, infructescence number per plant also declined during a flowering season: however, mean seed number per infructescence increaed toward the end of flowering season with no significant seasonal change in the total seed weight per infructescence. T. officinale produced on average about twice as many seeds per plant as T. laevigatum during a growing season. These two Taraxacum species produced quite small seeds in size compared to the endemic species, exhibiting a far better dispersal ability of introduced species. These data demonstrate that most reproductive characters decline in size and number in both species during a long flowering period, but the two species appear to employ different strategies to achieve reproductive success in disturbed habitats.
Employing the Numata-type life form, the paper analyzed changes of plants for 4 years at the Human-made Wetlands along Boknaecheon of Juam Lake since its creation. The number of the species planted at the Human-made Wetlands along Boknaecheon of Juam Lake, which was completed in December 2002, were 15 in total including, 10 families, 13 genera, 12 species and 3 varieties. As for the three-featured life forms of the planted species, there were 6 perennial hydatophytes, recording the biggest number of species in dormancy form; species each of $R_5$, $R_3$, $R_{2-3}$ respectively in radicoid from; 20 species of geomantic dissenminule form ($D_1$) in disseminule form and erecred type(e) existed the most in growth form. With regard to the 3 features of life form identified during the final year of the monitoring that lasted 5 years after the completion of the Wetlands, the number of species and individuals was found to have increased but there was no significant change of tendency as against the composition ration(%) of life form. There were 43 species of therophytes (Th) that covered 24.29% in dormancy form, while $R_5$ was prevalent in radicoid form and $D_4$, $D_1$, and $D_{1,4}$ comprosed 77.39% of the whole disseminule form. Growth form was surveyed in the order of erected type (e), bunch type (t), temporal rosette type (pr), branch type (b) and straight rosette type (ps) and these species comprised 64.97% of the whole flora. Consequently, in case of the artificial wetlands along the Boknaecheon of Juam Lake, it turned out that the vegetation type in which pioneer species of succession, or gradually stabilized perennial vegetation favoring Wetlands because the higher dormancy form has its perennial plants' composition ratio getting, the more its succession is progressing. Even though single grained plants ($R_5$) belonging to radicoid in breeding form, succession is predicted to take place considering the fact that they actually belong to ~ plants like Phragmites japonica that form a connection on the surface of the earth. In addition, it is judged that geomantic disseminule form ($D_1$) conveyed by water and gravitational disseminule form favored by the development of waterside woody plants ($D_4$) seem to be better fit to this area in desseminule form. As for growth form, bunch type (t) is judged to become prevalent on the Wetlands while a good variety of phanerophytes will coexist on the earth due to artificial as well as natural disturbances.
Root rot of carnation caused by isolates of Phytophthora was found at Kongju, 1996. Infected plants appeared symptoms of wilting, brown discoloration on collar area and consequently led to death. The causal pathogen was identified as Phytophthora nicotianae based on morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics. Mycelium was grown to rosette colony pattern on corn meal agar and the growth was 10.2 mm/day on 10% clarified V8 medium at $25^{\circ}C$. Swelling with radiating hyphae was formed in water and on agar within 7 days. Chlamydospores were abundantly produced on agar within 7 days. Sporangium was prominent papillate, 2~3 apex, 1.2 : 1 l/b ratio, lateral attacment on sporangiospore and was rarely produced on solid media but produced in water. The shape of sporangium was spherical or ovoid, and the size was 34~73$\times$32~60 (av. 33$\times$66.5) ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in dimension. The isolates were heterothallic, and mating type A2. Oogonium was spherical, ovoid, 26~36 (av. 36 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) in diameter, and antheridium was amphygynious to oogonia. The fungus was able to grow 10~35$^{\circ}C$, and optimal temperature was 27$^{\circ}C$.
The virus-induced genome editing (VIGE) system aims to induce targeted mutations in seeds without requiring any tissue culture. Here, we show that tobacco rattle virus (TRV) harboring guide RNA (gRNA) edits germ cells in a wild tobacco, Nicotiana attenuata, that expresses Streptococcus pyogenes Cas9 (SpCas9). We first generated N. attenuata transgenic plants expressing SpCas9 under the control of 35S promoter and infected rosette leaves with TRV carrying gRNA. Gene-edited seeds were not found in the progeny of the infected N. attenuata. Next, the N. attenuata ribosomal protein S5 A (RPS5A) promoter fused to SpCas9 was employed to induce the heritable gene editing with TRV. The RPS5A promoter-driven SpCas9 successfully produced monoallelic mutations at three target genes in N. attenuata seeds with TRV-delivered guide RNA. These monoallelic mutations were found in 2%-6% seeds among M1 progenies. This editing method provides an alternative way to increase the heritable editing efficacy of VIGE.

Lactuca scariola L. is one of ecosystem-disturbance plants that grow everywhere such as roadsides, grasslands, railroads, banks, and fields. L. scariola usually occurs in autumn. It overwinters in rosette form. It flowers and produces seeds in early summer of the next year. Seeds of L. scariola can germinate immediately without dormancy when the temperature is over 20℃. Due to endogenous bacteria in seeds of L. scariola, it has a strong drought tolerance. Thus, it can grow well on roadsides. L. scariola should be controlled as it can result in 60-80% of soybean yield loss at densities above 50 plants m-2. It is advisable to remove L. scariola as it competes with native plants by acting as a pioneer to other ecosystem-disturbance plants. Among various control methods, chemical control is the most effective method that is widely used. Soil treatment with herbicides such as oxyfluorfen EC and pendimethalin EC can inhibit the development of L. scariola. Foliar treatment herbicides glyphosate and glufosinateammonium are widely used. L. scariola is resistant to 2,4-D, dicamba, and MCPA among foliar treatment herbicides. Thus, it is recommended to apply herbicides with different modes of action.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of ridge height (10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, and 40 cm) on the soil physical property, the growth and flowering characteristics of Gypsophila paniculata (cv 'Bristol Fairy') in the subalpine area. As ridge height got higher, the daily soil temperature, the soil moisture content, soil hardness, bulk density, and solid phase ratio were decreased, but porosity ratio was a little increased. In summer and autumn cultivation the blooming of ridge height 30 cm and 40 cm was slightly delayed, but their root activity, cut flower width, and yield were better than those of 10 to 20 cm ridges. And the mortality ratio of plants, rosette formation rate, and nonpaniculata inflorescence rate became lower.
In Korea, Brassica species planted in summer remain in rosette and do not flower. Seed production of vernalized rape seedlings grown in summer was evaluated to establish method of generation shortening and genetically pure seed production without isolation of seed fields. When vernalized rape seedlings of different maturity groups were transplanted in summer, all plants bolted and flowered, and average days from sowing to bolting and flowering was 37 and 58. respectively. It took 85days for early maturity group, 88 days for medium maturity group, and 108 days for late maturity group to mature. Seed yield of vernalized plants grown in summer was 8.8 gr per plant and 53kg per l0a which was 23% of seed yield of rape planted in autumn. However, enough seeds were produced to test oil composition and cake and to plant for a next generation. If seedlings are raised, they can be transplanted in more than 1, 000 times of original seed field, indicating that genetically pure seed can be produced without caging seed fields with nets and isolation of seed fields since other Brassica species do not flower in summer.
This study investigated the effect of soil mulching materials and methods on weed occurring for the growth and flowering characteristics in Gypsophila plants cultivation. For mulching materials were used black polyethylene (PE) film, black polypropylene (PP), and green polypropylene, and these were mulched in both ridge and furrow (BRF) or only furrow, respectively. The weed was occurred total $146.2g/m^2/yr$ as dry weight in non-mulching, but $4.1{\sim}4.2g/m^2/yr$ in BRF mulching by black or green PP. Also weed control were yearly required 27.9 persons/10a in non-mulching, whereas 2.4 persons/10a in BRF mulching by black or green PP. Flower budding and blooming were roughly delayed in non-mulching and furrow mulching. Flowering characteristics such as flower stalk length, primary branches number, and stem firmness were remarkably improved in BRF mulching of black or green PP. Cut flower yield was increased on black BRF mulching or green PP in summer cultivation, while green PP BRF mulching showed better yield in in autumn cultivation. Mortality rate of Gypsophila plants after summer season was lowest as 12.4% in furrow mulching with black PP, followed by about 19.0% in green PP mulching, but highest as 39.0% in BRF mulching with black PE film. Rosette formation rate was lower in furrow than BRF mulching, and was lowest as 13.1% in BRF mulching with green PP, followed by 15.2~15.8% in BRF mulching with black PE film or black PP. So it was thought that BRF mulching with green PP was highly effective in weed control and improvement of yield and cut flower quality in Gypsophila plants cultivation.
Plants of Lycopersicon esculentum, containing various organic compounds, are known to develop idioblasts in their epidermis. Lycopersicon esculentum have long been investigated in many areas, but structural aspects of the epidermis of various organs have not been carried out in detail. Thus, the present study attempted to reveal the patterns of idioblast development, particularly those of the reproductive organs, in L. esculentum epidermis using scanning electron microscopy. The present study mainly focused on patterns of the stomata and trichome types. Two types of stomata were developed in the flowers and fruits: anomocytic stomata (stomata type I) were distributed normally throughout the epidermis, whereas actinocytic raised stomata (stomata type II) were found variously in different epidermal tissues. For the trichomes, both glandular and non-glandular types were developed in the epidermis. The former included peltate glandular trichomes having four head cells (trichome type I) and capitate multicellular glandular trichomes (trichome type II). The latter included non-glandular short trichomes (trichome type III) and considerably elongated trichomes with basal rosette cells (trichome type IV). In paticular, the raised stomata were well-developed in the peduncles and the peltate glandular trichomes were prominent in the sepal and ovary epidermis. Transmission electron microscopy on the ontogeny and ultrastructural differentiation of these idioblasts, associated with the current result, will aid us in better understanding of the structure and functional relationship in the epidermal differentriation of Lycopersicon esculentum.
