Objective of this study is to examine whether pine wood nematode (PWN: Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) in the sawdust discharged from infected trees cause pine wood disease or not. For this, survival time of PWN in soil was examined in which soil moisture was controlled as 15%, 22.5%, and 30% in volume ratio, respectively. The pathogenicity tests were conducted under greenhouse and field conditions. Survival time of PWN in soil was about three days in the saturated (about soil moisture of 23% in volume ratio) and dark condition between 25 and $28^{\circ}C$ of room temperature. None of potted seedlings with non-wounded roots was infected by PWN in sawdust. In field, pine wood disease was not occur in any pine trees. These results indicated that PWN discharged on soil when the infected trees were cut by chain saw can not cause pine wood disease.
This experiment is conducted fer method cf bring to perfectly from defective cutting sapling 25 a production method of sapling which is to substitute for conventional graf ting. 1. In green wood cutting root comes out after 15 days of cutting with nearly straight development of root system; after 40 days of cutting, roots with total length of 1119 mms 43 roots, and 5.4 grs a root in total weight obtained. 2. Survival percentage of green wood cutting ranges between 56% and 90%, average 73% of that and it varies with natural characteristics of varietes. The results show variety of Gaeryang-Suban and Iljiroe with 80% as a best ones in contrast with the variety of Shipyung. 3. The varietics or Gaeryang-Suban. Iljiroe, Suwon-Sang No.4, Rosang makes of much more roots than Yongchonchuwoo and Shipyung do. 4. Root ability made good number of roots commercially, when cutting is conducted soaking in 0.01 % NAA solution or 0.02% NAA solution for 2 or 3 seconds as a chemical promoter. 5. Economical measures for increase of scion adapted 1) 2 scions from a green wood 50 cm long should be taken and basal pan of scion at its middle portion should be cut right under the node. 2) Scions below 50cm long may be used. Small scions or growthceased shoots h3ve also considerable root ability enough to be used. 3) Thus far, up 100,000 scions might be produced in 10 a. 6. We can find number of root increased, when cutting the opposite side in obliquity manner at 450. 7. When 110,000 saplings in 10 a. for the production of bring to perfectly from defective cutting sapling planted, quality of stocks does not go to bad condition without any obstacles in practical use. 8. Although the times or grafting delayed until middle of July, quality of sapling goes just a little down. Grafting may be conducted from early June to middle of July separately in several times, and the green wood of prunned mulberry in spring is available for a scion after end of June. 9. 10 grs weight of defective cutting sapling makes 95% of complete sapling, otherwise 5 or 10 grs in weight of one becomes 80% of complete sapling with its quality as similar as grafted one. 10. When the sapling planted, its branches should be cut, leaving 3 or 4 buds at the bottom of new branches. 11. In view of economical stand point, production cost of bring to perfectly from defective cutting sapling obtains 52% of grafting cost.

This study aimed to derive the basic wood density, one of several carbon emission factors, for carbon accounting of bamboo forests in Korea. Bamboo is mainly distributed in Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam-do provinces, and 101 sample trees were selected for each of the three species (Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis, P. bambusoides, and P. pubescens). The basic wood density derivation used the KS F 2098 method. The measurements showed that the basic wood density was 0.83 g/cm3 for P. nigra var. henonis, 0.81 g/cm3 for P. bambusoides, and 0.72 g/cm3 for P. pubescens. However, the bamboo distribution area in Korea is not very large, and P. pubescens grows in one area only. Therefore, the basic wood density that can be applied to bamboo was 0.79 g/cm3. Evaluation of the uncertainty of the extracted basic wood density showed a very low value of 1.61%, which confirmed the reliability of the basic wood density derived from this analysis. The basic wood density, biomass expansion factor, and root-to-shoot ratio were used to calculate the carbon storage capacity of one bamboo plant and expanded to calculate the capacity for a hectare of bamboo. Carbon storage and absorption of bamboo were calculated by applying a carbon-emission factor, such as the basic wood density. These study results are expected to contribute to the carbon-neutral policy and forest management direction in Korea.

A sesquiterpene ortho-naphtpoquinone was isolated from the 80% aqueous methanolic extract of root bark of Ulmus davidiana Planch whose stem and root bark have been used as an oriental medicine for the treatment of edema, mastitis, gastric cancer and inflammation. On the basis of spectral data obtained from UV-vis, IR, HR-EIMS and NMR spectrometry, including the pulse field gradient (PFG) HMQC and HMBC techniques, the structure of this compound was determined as 2,3-dihydro-3-hydroxy-3,6,9-trimethylnaphtho(1,8-b,c)pyran-7,8-dione which has been known as mansonone 1. This compound has been isolated only from the heart-wood of Mansonia altissima Chev, a Sterculiacea from West Africa. Thus, this compound was isolated for the second time from natural source in this study. This is the first report to present the carbon chemical shift assignment of mansonone I.
In this study, we investigated the culture conditions of four ectomycorrhizal fungi, namely, Amanita spissacea NIFoS 2719, Pisolithus arhizus NIFoS 2784, Suillus spraguei NIFoS 2848, and Xanthoconium affine NIFoS 2716, in solid and liquid culture media. In addition, we attempted to induce in vitro mycorrhization of the fungi with Pinus densiflora. Prior to liquid culture, we determined the optimal culture conditions for each species in solid media. The results revealed that all species examined are capable of growth in potato dextrose agar (PDA), malt extract agar (MEA), and modified Melin-Norkran's medium (MMN), although their preferred growth media were different. Liquid culture experiments showed that inorganic nitrogen did not enhance the mycelial growth of all four species. Therefore, we used MMN-based liquid inocula to promote the growth of ectomycorrhizal fungi in our symbiosis culture system. Mycorrhization was observed in Xanthoconium affine NIFoS 2716. Morphological analysis revealed that fungi-inoculated roots of P. densiflora form simple and dichotomous lateral roots with dense mycelia. In addition, inoculation with X. affine NIFoS 2716 promoted root and shoot developments.
Ramaria botrytis is one of the commercially important ectomycorrhizal mushrooms in Korea and the mushroom is only picked in natural forest. This study was conducted to make ectomycorrhizal synthesis of the fungus using Pinus densiflora seedling. Ectomycorrhizal types of the fungus were simple and dichotomous. Diameter of ectomycorrhizal root was $325-380{\mu}m$ and fungal mantle was subhyaline with $20-30{\mu}m$ in diameter. On the other hand, optimum temperature for mycelial growth was $25^{\circ}C$ and the fungus grew 5 cm on potato dextrose agar medium in two months.
This study was aimed to develop the knot quantification method to predict bending strength, using x-ray scanner. The bending strength prediction model was proposed in this paper. The model was based on Knot Depth Ratio (KDR) and closely-spaced knot was taken into account. The previous paper reported that KDR is the ratio of the knot and transit zone to the lumber thickness. Even though KDR involves transit zone, it was verified that the ratio of the moment of inertia for knot to gross cross section ($I_k/I_g$) based on KDR was a good predictor for bending strength of lumber. To take closely-spaced knot into account, a projection method was also proposed. This projection method improved the predictive accuracy significantly. It showed coefficient of determinant of 0.65 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 9.17.
This study was conducted in an effort to meet the need for domestic production of hydroponic media and for medium development using recycled hydroponic rockwool slabs. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the growth of plug seedlings of petunia 'Romeo' in various mixtures including particles of used rockwool slabs (rockwool particles) and wood chips. In the first experiment, seedlings were grown in plugs filled with mixtures of steam- sterilized rockwool particles and chestnut wood chips, which had been weathered for six months and screened through either 2.8 mm or 5.6 mm sieve, at the mixing ratio of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, or 0:100 (v/v). In the second experiment, seedlings were grown in plugs filled with twenty different mixtures of steam-sterilized particles of used hydroponic rockwool slabs with 4 mm chestnut or pine wood chips, coir, peatmoss, or perlite. In the first experiment seedling growth was not affected by particle size of chestnut wood chips, was superior in the control (commercial plug medium) and in 100% rockwool particles, but was suppressed as mixing ratio of chestnut wood chips increased. In the second experiment, leaf length, and shoot fresh and dry weights were the greatest in rockwool particles+peatmoss+coir treatment, followed by rockwool particles+peatmoss treatment. Leaf length was suppressed as ratio of wood chips increased, especially of chestnut wood chips. Root development was the greatest in rockwool particles+peatmoss+perlite treatment, followed by the control, and rockwool particles+peatmoss+coir treatment. The growth was suppressed as the mixing ratio of rockwool particles, peatmoss, or coir decreased.

The purpose of this study was to calculate uncertainty of emission factor collected data and to evaluate the applicability of Monte Carlo simulation technique. To estimate the distribution of emission factors (Such as Basic wood density, Biomass expansion factor, and Root-to-shoot ratio), four probability density functions (Normal, Lognormal, Gamma, and Weibull) were used. The two sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and cumulative density figure were used to compare the optimal probability density function. It was observed that the basic wood density showed the gamma distribution, the biomass expansion factor results the log-normal distribution, and root-shoot ratio showd the normal distribution for Pinus densiflora in the Gangwon region; the basic wood density was the normal distribution, the biomass expansion factor was the gamma distribution, and root-shoot ratio was the gamma distribution for Pinus densiflora in the central region, respectively. The uncertainty assessment of emission factor were upper 62.1%, lower -52.6% for Pinus densiflora in the Gangwon region and upper 43.9%, lower -34.5% for Pinus densiflora in the central region, respectively.
This study aimed to develop biomass allometric equations and estimate carbon emission factors, such as the wood density, biomass-expansion factor, and root-to-shoot ratio, for Platanus occidentalis and Metasequoia glyptostroboides planted in urban areas. Twenty M. glyptostroboides and 25 P. occidentalis trees were harvested, and the dry weights and stem volumes of stems, branches, leaves, and roots (>5 mm) were measured. The wood densities of M. glyptostroboides and P. occidentalis were 0.293 ± 0.008 g cm-3 and 0.509 ± 0.018 g cm-3, and the biomass-expansion factors were 1.738 ± 0.031 and 1.561 ± 0.035. The root-to-shoot ratios were 0.446 ± 0.009 and 0.402 ± 0.012. The uncertainty tests (coefficient of variation, %) gave 2.8% and 3.5% values for wood density, 1.8% and 2.3% for biomass-expansion factor, and 2.1% and 2.9% for root-to-shoot ratio, respectively. Among the developed allometric equations, Model I using the diameter at breast height (DBH) was suitable. The allometric equations of M. glyptostroboides and P. occidentalis above ground were y = 1.679 (DBH)1.315 and y = 0.505 (DBH)1.896, and the allometric equations of the root and total were y = 0.746 (DBH)1.315, y = 0.301 (DBH)1.751, y = 2.422 (DBH)1.316, and y = 0.787 (DBH)1.858. If the carbon-emission factors of this study and biomass allometric equations of the three developed models are used to estimate the carbon storage and biomass of urban forests, errors caused by not considering the use of fixed factors and the environmental differences can be reduced.
