Angelicae gigantis Radix (dried root of Angelica gigas) including major bioactives such as decursin and decursinol angelate provides rich flavors and several healthy benefits. Recent studies have shown that ultrafine powders of herbal medicines provide better physical properties and biological activities. Thus, ultrafine Angelica powder was added into the oligosaccharide syrup to provide flavors and healthy benefits in this study. Angelicae gigantis Radix was pulverized into d(0.1) = 3.220, d(0.5) = 7.822, and d(0.9) = 7.817 $\mu$m respectively using an air-flow mill. The ultrafine Angelica powder was added into the oligosaccharide syrup process with different ratios of water to oligosaccharide syrup at 1:5, 1:8, 1:11, and 1:14. The physicochemical properties such as viscosity and bulk density were measured. The Stokes' law was applied to predict the sedimentation velocity of the added Angelica powder in the syrup. The Angelica syrup prepared in this experiment showed good stability since the Angelica particles precipitated down slowly. The ratio of water to oligosaccharide syrup at 1:11 showed the optimal preparation in terms of the stability and the viscosity. The ultrafine-sized herbal powders such as Angelicae gigantis Radix have potentials for various food and pharmaceutical applications.
Polyphenol oxidase was purified from acetone powder extract of the root of Ixeris sonchifolia. The enzyme obtained by ammonium sulfate fractionation and sephadex G-200 gelfiltration gave 51-fold purification over the crude extract. The purified enzyme showed activity toward chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and pyrocatechol. The kinetics of thermal inactivation of the enzyme followed first-order reaction. Potassium cyanide and cysteine were potent inhibitors.

Many studies have shown that hyperglycemia leads to an increase of lipid peroxidation in diabetic patients and animals, reflecting a rise reactive oxygen species production. It is increasingly recognized that brain is another site of diabetic organ damage. Accordingly, this study was to investigate the effect of dandelion on oxygen free radical generating and scavenging system of brain in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into diabetic (control) and diabetic-dandelion supplemented groups. Dandelion was supplemented for 4 weeks with dandelion leaf and root powder (DLP, DRP) or dandelion leaf and root water extract (DLW, DRW) based on 11.4 g of raw dandelion/kg diet. Diabetes was induced by single injection STZ (55 mg/kg B.W., i.p.)in a citrate buffer. Oxygen free radical generating enzymes, cytochrome P-450, amino-pyrine N-demethylase, aniline hydroxylase and xanthine oxidase, were lowered in dandelion supplemented-groups compared to the control group. Superoxide dismutase, catalase and gluthathione peroxidase activities of brain were also lower in dandelion leaf and root supplemented-group than in the control group, whereas glutathione S-transferase activity and gluthathione content were increased in dandelion supplemented-groups compared to the control group. With regard to the lipid peroxidation products, the malondialdehyde content of brain was lower in dandelion supplemented groups. Therefore, it could be suggested that powder and water extract of dandelion leaf or root are beneficial in preventing diabetic complication from lipid peroxidation and free radical in brain of diabetic rat brain.

This study was carried out to examine the substitution possibility into fiber pot instead of Jiffy pot for the good transplanting. Fiber pot was made of fiber, wood waste particle, and bark powder (10% of the particle weight) and also latex was added into the furnish as a binder. The pots were sprayed with just enough urea solution to prevent nitrogen deficiency of pot media coming from the breakdown of wood fiber in the pot wan during the plant growing. The utility of fiber pot was compared with that of Jiffy pot in the service test of two tree species under a green-house condition. The results obtained can be summarized as follows ; 1. Fiber pot made of 30% wood fiber+70% particle including 10% of bark powder, and 3%-latex has shown a good results like that of Jiffy pot in the sp. gr., tear factor and burst factor. For water absorption, fiber pot made of 50% fiber+50% particle, and 3%-latex got the best result. In the consideration of the above physical and mechanical properties of the fiber pot for good root penetration through the pot wall and facile handling, fiber pot made of 30% fiber+70% particle, and 3%-latex may be seemed to be good. 2. There were no harms in sapling growth in fiber pot as well as in Jiffy pot. The root penetration ability through the fiber pot was slightly inferior to that of Jiffy pot, and yet the pot damage through transportation seemed to be slighter in fiber pot than in Jiffy pot.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of new material, bioceramic powder in the nutrient solution(0.02%) and foliar spray(0.2%) on the growth and fruit quality of aeroponically grown tomato(Lycopersicon esculentum MILL. cv. Seokwang). Plant height was lowered, but root growth was increased both treatment of bioceramic powder into the nutrient solution and foliar spray. Cluster growth of tomato plants increased up to 14% over than that of control in the plot of foliar spray with bioceramic powder. Total plant dry weight also increased when bioceramic powder was treated both into the nutrient solution and foliar spray. T/R ratio was reduced by the treatment of bioceramic powder, but NAR and RGR showed the highest in the plot of foliar spray treated with 0.2% bioceramic powder than that of the other plots. Cumulative fruit fresh and dry weight were reduced when bioceramic powder was treated into nutrient solution but foliar spray produced more cumulative fruit fresh and dry weight than that of control. It was shown that treatment of bioceramic powder into the nutrient solution and foliar spray could be improved sugar degree without reducing fruit yields.
We evaluated the antioxidative activity of extracts of P. lobata root depending on roasting conditions. P. lobata roots were roasted at three different temperature at $150^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, and $250^{\circ}C$ and three different time at 10 min, 20 min, and 30 min respectively. Roasted P. lobata root was extracted using water at $85^{\circ}C$ for 6 h and filtered using filter paper, followed by then evaporated ($12{\pm}0.3^{\circ}Brix$) and freeze-dried. The concentration of maker compound puerarin was determined using a high performance liquid chromatography system. 2 phenolic compounds, flavonoid contents, and antioxidant activities of the extract powder were evaluated. Puerarin contents, Phenolic compounds, and flavonoid contents of roasted P. lobata root were higher than those of unroasted P. lobata root. The results of DPPH and ABTS showed that roasted P. lobata root possessed higher antioxidant activity than unroasted P. lobata root. This study suggested that roasting process could be applied to P. lobata root in order to achieve its high quality and functionality.

The root-mat formation of infant rice seedlings (8- to 10-day-old) is sometime not enough for machine transplanting because of the too-short nursery period. This experiment was conducted to elucidate the effect of metalaxyl seed-soaking treatment in the mixed solution of metalaxyl, seed disinfectant and insectcides on the root-mat formation of infant rice seedling in machine transplanting. The rice seeds of Odaebyeo were soaked in the mixed solution of metalaxyl, prochloraz and insectcides. with the recommended concentrations for 24 hours at room temperature. Seeding rate was 220g per seed tray (30 x 60 x 3cm). Metalaxyl (25% wettable powder), a fungicide. was used in 1. 000 times dilution as a promoting substance on the root-mat formation. Generally, the metalaxyl-treated seeds markedly increased the root number and length, and rooting activity of infant rice seedlings as compared with the control, thus the root-mat formation was excellent. When the rice seeds were sterilized by the mixed solution of prochloraz and insectcides, metalaxyl could be used together for increasing root-mat rormation of infant rice seedlIngs due to no interaction among agro-chemicals used. Seedling damping-off and physiological seedling rot were also controled in the seedlings of metalaxy-treated seeds. The root-mat of metalxyl-treated seeds had higher hardness and tension than control in terms of physical properties.

The metalaxyl seed-soaking treatment markedly increased the root-mat formation of the young rice seedling(8- to l0-day-old) for machine transplanting. This experiment was conducted to find out a possible rooting mechanism of the young rice seedling in relation to the exogenous metalaxyl seed-soaking treatment. The rice seeds of Hwaseongbyeo variety were soaked in the solution of metalaxyl for 24 hours at room temperature. Metalaxyl(25% wettable powder), a fungicide, was used at the concentration of 200ppm as a promoting substance on the root-mat formation of the young rice seedling. Seeding rate of the young rice seedling was 220g per seed tray(30${\times}$60${\times}$depth 3cm). Metalaxyl seed treatment was highly effective in root initiation and elongation of the young rice seedling in terms of root activity, the number and length of root, and amino acid content of roots. The exogenous metalaxyl application would also increase the chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate in the young rice seedling. Those factors resulted in vigorous root-mat formation of the young rice seedling. In particular, alanine is a lead compound of metalaxyl which biochemically plays an important role in energy intermediate of the rice plant. Alanine conjugation with a glucose (N-${\beta}$-glucoside) is probably the mechanism in enhancement of initiation and elongation of rice roots of young rice seedling.
Two bio-assays were conducted to evaluate turmeric root powder and mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) as alternatives to feed antibiotics for broilers. In one trial, one hundred and eighty 19-days old broilers assigned to 18 groups of 10 were fed on one of six experimental diets with three replicates during four weeks. The diets included a basal feed without additives and with either virginiamycin, MOS, or turmeric at 1, 2 and 3 g/kg, respectively. In the second trial, one hundred and forty four 21-days old broilers arranged in 16 groups of nine were fed on the first four diets with four replicates for a similar period. Virginiamycin, MOS and turmeric (1 g/kg) in the first trial generally improved the weight gain of broilers by 3.4, 6.2 and 5.3%, respectively. In the second trial they increased the weight gain significantly (p<0.05) by 8.8, 8.0 and 15.1%, respectively. Additives improved the feed efficiency up to 15.1% and carcass recovery up to 3.1% (p<0.05). Virginiamycin, MOS and turmeric (1 g/kg) markedly reduced the abdominal fat content from 1.91% BW in the control to 1.44, 0.97 and 1.2% BW, respectively, in the first trial. The corresponding values obtained in the second trial were 1.01, 0.55 and 0.6%, respectively as compared to 1.22% in the control group. All additives showed a remarkable inhibition of duodenal coliform bacteria, yeast and mould in the caecum, and all viable microbes in the ileum. A significant (p<0.05) improvement in energy and protein utilization could be recorded with supplemented diets except for high turmeric diets. Dietary 2 and 3 g/kg addition of turmeric reduced energy and protein utilization as well as fat deposition. Present results reveal that turmeric and MOS are satisfactory alternatives to antibiotics in broiler feeds. Both MOS and turmeric possess an antimicrobial effect in vivo. Turmeric may also depress fat deposition in broilers.

Purpose: This study was undertaken to evaluate the clinical and microbiological effects of an erythritol powder air-polishing device (EPAP) as a supplement to scaling and root planing (SRP) therapy in patients with moderate chronic periodontitis. Methods: Clinical and microbiological evaluations were performed at 21 sites treated with SRP (control) and 21 sites treated with SRP+EPAP (test). All examinations were performed before treatment, 1 month after treatment, and 3 months after treatment. Results: There were no significant clinical differences between the test group and the control group. Microbiological analysis revealed that the relative expression level of Porphyromonas gingivalis was significantly lower in the test group than in the control group at 1 month after treatment. Clinical and microbiological results showed improvements at 1 month compared to baseline; in contrast, the results at 3 months after treatment were worse than those at 1 month after treatment. Conclusions: In this study, both SRP and SRP+EPAP were clinically and microbiologically effective as non-surgical periodontal treatments. In particular, the SRP+EPAP group showed an antimicrobial effect on P. gingivalis, a keystone bacterium associated with the onset of chronic periodontitis, in a short-term period. Periodic periodontal therapy, at intervals of at least every 3 months, is important for sustaining the microbiological effects of this treatment.
