  • This study was carried out to investigate the correlation between root diameter and ginsenoside composition of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer cultivar Yunpoong. Dry matter ratio of main root was a little higher than that of lateral root and fine root, and that was higher by the increase of root diameter in the same root parts. Total ginsenosides composition of main and lateral roots increased by the decrease of root diameter, especially in lateral root. Similar resulted in fine root, but there was no significant difference where root diameter was below 2.5 mm. Except for ginsenoside-$Rg_1$, other ginsenosides component, PDs, PTs and total ginsenosides had highly negative correlation with the root diameter within whole root, main root+lateral root and lateral root+fine root, while $Rg_1$ had positive correlation with the root diameter.

  • Rice seedling test was conducted to check the loging tolerance at ripening stage through evaluating the root characters. Thirteen Korean and foreign rice cultivars with direct seeding adaptable or high quality characteristics were grown in a cell pot and under submerged paddy. The root characters and pushing resistance of rice hill were determined at seedling and ripening stage, respectively. The diameter of crown root at the 7th and 8th leaf stages was thicker in lodging tolerance cultivars than those of others and showed significant-positive correlation with both pushing resistance and crown root diameter of mature plants. Also, the tensile strength of crown root at the 7th and 8th leaf stage showed highly positive correlation with the tensile strength of crown root of mature plants. The number of crown root at 7th leaf stage was significant-positively correlated with that of mature plant. The diameter of seminal root was not significantly correlated with the diameter of crown root throughout the whole growth stage. These results indicate that the diameter, tensile strength and number of crown root associated with root lodging tolerance can be detected with the seedling at about 7th or 8th leaf stage, and the seedling test using the cell pot is an useful and practical method to select lodging tolerant cultivars or lines of rice based on root characters, especially diameter of crown root.

  • This study was carried out to investigate ginsenoside content in different root parts and the correlation between root diameter and ginsenoside composition of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer cultivated by direct seeding. The unit contents of ginsenoside were 29.65, 28.76, 26.34 mg/g, respectively in 4, 5, 6 years old. However, the total contents of ginsenoside were 431.97, 606.56, 657.80 mg/root, respectively. Total ginsenoside content of fine root was higher than that of main root and lateral root. These tendencies were related to decrease by the increase of root diameter. When diameter of main root and lateral root were the same in different ages, the total ginsenoside content was higher in the order of 4 > 5 > 6 years old roots. Except for ginsenoside-Rg1, other ginsenosides components (PD/PT and total ginsenosides) had highly negative correlation with the root diameter within whole root, main root, lateral root and fine root, which indicated that ginsenoside content is correlated to root diameter. As results, it is suggested that ginsenoside content can be predicted.

  • Materials and methods: Sixty extracted premolars were assigned to three groups according to the root canal system (Weine's classification; type I, II and III) of 20 teeth each using radiographic examination. The root tip was cut horizontally 1 mm from the anatomical apex and the apical cross-section was visualized using microscope at x50 magnification and photographed. Minimum and maximum apical root canal diameter of each tooth was measured and classified into three types by canal morphology (round, oval and flattened shape). Statistical analysis was performed to compare the apical root canal diameter and morphology according to the root canal system. Results: In apical root canal morphology at cross-sectional view, the most common shape was round in type I, flat in type II, and oval in type III. In apical root canal diameters at cross-sectional view, there was a significant difference between the minimum and maximum diameter in all types (p<0.05). The maximum diameter was 0.331 mm in type I, 0.519 mm in type II, and 0.310 mm in type III. There was a significant difference among type I, III and type II (p<0.05). Conclusion: The morphology and diameter of apical root canal was different according to the root canal system. Therefore, clinicians should consider the apical file size in view of the apical root canal shape according to the root canal system.

  • This study was carried out to investigate change of ginsenoside contents according to tissue ratio in ginseng root by age and diameter. The epidermis-cortex and xylem-pith extent, fresh weight, dry weight of ginseng increased with the root age increase. They increased higher in xylem-pith than in epidermis-cortex. The ratio of epidermis-cortex decreased and xylem-pith increased as the main root diameter increased. In case of same diameter, the xylem-pith ratio increased by the increase of root age. The epidermis-cortex ratio was 4 > 5 > 6 years, respectively. The total 10 ginsenosides of epidermis- cortex increased with the root age increase. However, the total ginsenoside of xylem-pith decreased and it was 2~5 times lower than epidermis-cortex. The most of ginsenoside contents existed in epidermis-cortex. The diameter decrease in main root is related to the increase of epidermis-cortex ratio. It leads to increase of ginsenoside contents. In order to select high level of ginsenoside cultivar, it suggested that it should be selected main root having narrow diameter and lower epidermis- cortex ratio.

  • This study was conducted to investigate correlation between external factors of chicory root and chicon fresh weight, whereby, to provide basic information of external yardstick of producing standardized chicon. For correlation between external factors (root diameter, root weight) of chicory root and chicon fresh weight were highly correlated. The relationship between external factors (root diameter, root weight) of chicory root and chicon fresh weight, root diameter was strongly affecting chicon fresh weight due to significant at its regression coefficient ($6.06^{***}$). In order to verity this correlation, the root diameter (x) of chicory that were 3 different varieties were based on the 4 different root diameter treatments, such as x ${\leq}$ 30 mm, 30 < x ${\leq}$ 40 mm, 40 < x ${\leq}$ 50 mm and x > 50 mm. The chicon production increased as root diameter increased and the chicon fresh weight, chicon width, and the number of leaves increased as well. Therefore, the measure of root diameter of chicory instead of the internal factors (carbohydrate, and so on.) can be used to predict the chicon fresh weight.

  • A kinematically admissible velocity field for closed-die forging of spur gear is proposed. The velocity field is divided into three regions of deformation. In the analysis, the involute curve is approximated to be straight line and the upper-bound method is used to calculate energy dissipation rate. A constant frictional factor has been assumed on the contacting surfaces. The effects of root diameter relative pressure is independent of root diameter for the same number of teeth, but increases with the number of teeth on a given root diameter. In the presence of friction, relative forging pressure increases with increasing root diameter at the start of forging, but decreases with increasing root diameter in the processing of forging.

  • A kinematically admissible velocity field for the numerical analysis of closed-die forging process of spur gear is proposed. The velocity field is divided into three regions of deformation. In the analysis, the involute curve is approximated to be straight line and the upper-bound method is used to calculate energy dissipation rate. A constant frictional frictional factor has been assumed on the contacting surfaces. The effects of root diameter, number of teeth, and friction factor are determined on the relative forging pressure. The frictionless relative pressure is independent of root diameter for the same number of teeth, but increases with the number of teeth on a given root diameter. In the presence of friction, the relative forging presure increasing root diameter at the start of forging, but decreases with increasing root diameter in the processing of forging.

  • The successful restoration program requires a comprehensive understanding of variables influencing seedling efficiency. Below-ground is hypothesized to have a major impact on seedling performance of species when planted in agriculture, and degraded areas with different types of mulching. This study investigated on Sg. Terla Forest Reserve in Cameron Highlands Pahang, Malaysia. In this study randomized complete block design (RCBD) was used. The excavation method was applied to study the root system development, above, and below ground biomass distributions under different types of mulching: coconut mulching (CM), oil palm mulching (OM), plastic mulching (PM) and control (CK). The root diameter, main root length, lateral root length, root coiling, and root direction toward to sun were recorded. The results in this study indicate that mulching had significant effect on root diameter, main root length, and root distributions among treatments while for lateral root length, root: shoot ratio, dry biomass distributions, and above and below ground biomass did not showed significant effect among treatments. The highest values for root diameter, lateral root length, main root length, root distributions, dry biomass distributions and above and below ground biomass were showed in CM treatments. However 75% of root coiling was observed in seedlings between treatments.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimum temperature and light intensity of photosynthesis and transmittance in the shade for better growth and root yield of ginseng. The 3-year-old ginseng plants grown under the shade of 5, 10 and 20% transmittance did not show any significant difference in the stem length, stem diameter, leaf area and root length. The root diameter markedly increased under the shade of 10% and 20% transmittance, and the root was the heaviest under the shade of 20% transmittance. The 6-year-old ginseng plants grown at 20% transmittance showed the largest root diameter but the root length was not influenced by transmittance. The root was heaviest in the shade of 20% transmittance.
