The factors influencing long-term prognosis of teeth must be carefully considered. Among these, attachment level is strongly associated with tooth loss. The purpose of the present study was to estimate pattern of attachment loss based on attachment area in extracted teeth. 197 satisfied the criteria for assessment after staining. The protocol described by Waerhaug(l975) was performed. An indir ect method, based on digital image abstracted from digital camera and digital imaging software program, was used to calculate the root surface area and the attachment loss area. The data were analysed using SPSS. Except maxillary central incisior and mandibular canine, no statistical significant differences between each root surfaces were observed in anterior teeth. In posterior teeth, statistical significant differences in palatal surface of maxillary molar and mandibular molar compared with others were observed. Statistical significant difference in buccal surface compared with others was lowly observed in single and multi rooted. This study did not reveal progressive loss pattern of attachment area in each root surface but clarified root surface that has relative high loss rate of attachment area at extraction. Thus understanding this pattern of attachment loss is helpful for dentist to treat the periodontitis.
Objectives: Understanding the reason for an unsuccessful non-surgical endodontic treatment outcome, as well as the complex anatomy of the root canal system, is very important. This study examined the cross-sectional root canal structure of mandibular first molars confirmed to have failed non-surgical root canal treatment using digital images obtained during intentional replantation surgery, as well as the causative factors of the failed conventional endodontic treatments. Materials and Methods: This study evaluated 115 mandibular first molars. Digital photographic images of the resected surface were taken at the apical 3 mm level and examined. The discolored dentin area around the root canal was investigated by measuring the total surface area, the treated areas as determined by the endodontic filling material, and the discolored dentin area. Results: Forty 2-rooted teeth showed discolored root dentin in both the mesial and distal roots. Compared to the original filled area, significant expansion of root dentin discoloration was observed. Moreover, the mesial roots were significantly more discolored than the distal roots. Of the 115 molars, 92 had 2 roots. Among the mesial roots of the 2-rooted teeth, 95.7% of the roots had 2 canals and 79.4% had partial/complete isthmuses and/or accessory canals. Conclusions: Dentin discoloration that was not visible on periapical radiographs and cone-beam computed tomography was frequently found in mandibular first molars that failed endodontic treatment. The complex anatomy of the mesial roots of the mandibular first molars is another reason for the failure of conventional endodontic treatment.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate vital pulp tissue removal from different endodontic instrumentation systems from root canal apical third in vivo. Materials and Methods: Thirty mandibular molars were selected and randomly divided into 2 test groups and one control group. Inclusion criteria were a positive response to cold sensibility test, curvature angle between 10 and 20 degrees, and curvature radius lower than 10 mm. Root canals prepared with Hero 642 system (size 45/0.02) (n = 10) and Reciproc R40 (size 40/0.06) (n = 10) and control (n = 10) without instrumentation. Canals were irrigated only with saline solution during root canal preparation. The apical third was evaluated considering the touched/untouched perimeter and area to evaluate the efficacy of root canal wall debridement. Statistical analysis used t-test for comparisons. Results: Untouched root canal at cross-section perimeter, the Hero 642 system showed 41.44% ± 5.62% and Reciproc R40 58.67% ± 12.39% without contact with instruments. Regarding the untouched area, Hero 642 system showed 22.78% ± 6.42% and Reciproc R40 34.35% ± 8.52%. Neither instrument achieved complete cross-sectional root canal debridement. Hero 642 system rotary taper 0.02 instruments achieved significant greater wall contact perimeter and area compared to reciprocate the Reciproc R40 taper 0.06 instrument. Conclusions: Hero 642 achieved higher wall contact perimeter and area but, regardless of instrument size and taper, vital pulp during in vivo instrumentation is not entirely removed.

Percentage of aerenchyma area has been closely linked with amounts of methane emitted by rice. A diversity panel of 39 global rice varieties were examined to determine genetic variation for root transverse section (RTS), aerenchyma area, and % aerenchyma. RTS and aerenchyma area showed a strong positive correlation while there existed no significant correlation between RTS area and % aerenchyma. Five varieties previously shown to differ in methane emissions under field conditions were found to encompass the variation found in the diversity panel for RTS and aerenchyma area. These five varieties were evaluated in a greenhouse study to determine the relationship of RTS, aerenchyma area, and % aerenchyma with methane emissions. Methane emissions at physiological maturity were the highest for 'Rondo', followed by 'Jupiter', while 'Sabine', 'Francis' and 'CLXL745' emitted the least. The same varietal rank, 'Rondo' being the largest and 'CLXL745' the smallest, was observed with RTS and aerenchyma areas. RTS and aerenchyma area were significantly correlated with methane emissions, r = 0.61 and r = 0.57, respectively (P < 0.001); however, there was no relationship with % aerenchyma. Our results demonstrated that varieties with a larger root area also developed a larger aerenchyma area, which serves as a gas conduit, and as a result, methane emissions were increased. This study suggests that root transverse section area could be used as a means of selecting germplasm with reduced $CH_4$ emissions.
The growth characteristics of Paeonia ostii 'Fengdan' seedlings roots in response to trichokonins-spray treatment were investigated in this study. One-year-old seedlings of P. ostii 'Fengdan' were potted in plastic cups containing garden mold and grown under field conditions. The results showed that application of trichokonins significantly promoted root growth in P. ostii 'Fengdan' seedlings. The total root projection area, total root surface area, total root volume, total root length, root number and root diameter of seedlings treated with 0.25 mg/L trichokonins were higher by 141.70, 116.59, 119.44, 55.97, 348.88 and 127.78%, respectively, than that of the control. Thus, the results supported the hypothesis that good growth condition for roots could directly improve their nutrient absorption and utilization efficiency, promoting plant growth and development.

Using modified Lincoln solution, hydroponic system was developed to compare simultaneously a range of pasture species in terms of relative growth rate(RGR), rate of roots to shoots, and relative root volume and root area. Modified Lincoln solution achieved optimum growth of nineteen forage species tested, and was proved to be a good method for studying plant root characteristics. RGR was measured sucesshlly showing reasonably consistant values over time. There was a much differences in rootkhoot ratio between species within groups as between groups. Root tissue density was lower in grasses than legume or herb group. Root area index was very high for grasses and herbs, and this index should be useful for evaluating the comparative root system of different species.
The experiment was investigated the effects of lower root zone temperature on shoot and root growth of 'Akihime' strawberries in aeroponics in cold season. Root growth was decreased with decrease of root zone temperature, especially in lateral roots. Elongation of main roots was highest in $18^{\circ}C$ of root zone temperature. Number of lateral roots and length of lateral roots were lowest in $8^{\circ}C$ of root zone temperature. Lower root zone temperature resulted significantly in decrease of fresh weight of root and shoot and leaf area of strawberry. But there were no significant statistical differences in shoot fresh weight and leaf area in $8^{\circ}C$ and $13^{\circ}C$ of root zone temperature. Leaf length, leaf width and number of leaves of strawberry were decreased in lower root zone temperature. The results of this experiment will be utilized in the winter season cultivation for strawberry in hydroponics.
This study was carried out to clarify the effect of sowing method in four planting densities on growth and root yield of Cynanchum wilfordii. vine diameter, number of branches, number of branched roots, and root length, were greater in seedling transplanting than in direct sowing. In planting densities, main vine length, number of branches, and number of tillers were increased at higher planting density, but vine diameter, leaf length, leaf width, root length, and root diameter were increased at lower planting density. fresh root yield was greater in seedling transplanting than in direct sowing. In seedling transplanting, it was 53% higher in 27 plants per unit area than 1,680 kg/10a in 17 plants per unit area. Therefore, seedling transplanting in 27 plants per unit area showed most effective for increasing root yield of Cynanchum wilfordii.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the hybrid instrumentation method with ProTaper and ProFile on the change of root canal area and distance from the canal to the root surface after canal shaping. The mesial canals of twenty extracted mandibular first molars having $10-20^{\circ}\Delta$ curvature were scanned using X-ray microcomputed tomography (XMCT)-scanner before root canals were instrumented. They were divided into four groups (n=10 canals ter group). In Group 1, root canals were instrumented by the step-back technique with stainless steel K-Flexofile after coronal flaring. The remainders were instrumented by the crown-down technique with, ProTaper system (Group 2), ProFile (Group 3) or ProTaper (Group 4). All canals were prepared up to size 25 at the end-point of preparation and scanned again. Pre- and post-operative cross-sectional images of 1, 3, 5, and 7 mm from the apical foramen were compared. For each level, change of cross-sectional canal are and distance to the nearest external root surface was calculated using Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and image software program. In the change of cross-sectional area, Group 4 was less than Group 2 at 3 mm and 5 mm level (p<0.05). In the difference of the distance from the canal to the root surface after canal shaping, Group 4 was least among the other groups at 7 mm level (p<0.05). According to the results, the methods using ProFile or K file only and the hybrid instrumentation technique using ProTaper and ProFile are more appropriate methods of canal preparation than ProTaper system for narrow of curved canals.
Using a model system that can compare the before and after of canal preparation in the same tooth, we measured the area of the cross section, and canal wall thickness of the distal portion of the mesial root of the mandibular molar, and compared the amount of reduction in the canal using hand flared preparation the Gates-Glidden drill flared preparation according to the changes in the MAF. The results were as follows. 1. After canal preparation, the canal wall thickness had no significant difference between the hand flared preparation and Gates-Glidden drill flared preparation. 2. The canal wall thickness, after canal preparation, there was no significant difference between the sizes of the MAF. 3. The area variation range of each cross section of root had no significant difference between MAF size and methods of canal preparation. 4. After canal preparation, the frequency of the canal wall thickness under 0.5mm showed 3.5mm below the furcation to be the most frequent with statistical significance(p<0.05). 2mm below the furcation and 5mm below the furcation followed but there was no statistical significance. 5. The danger zone of the mesial root of the mandibular molar seems to be around 3.5mm.
