  • The temperature distribution of high speed tool steel wire/bar during high speed hot rolling procedures has been studied in this study. The tool steels wire/bar show severe temperature gradient during rolling procedures and the temperature of center part much higher than that of the surface. This temperature gradient accumulated after every rolling procedure and the center of rolled wire/bar could be remelt in a certain stage to cause inside defects. In the present study, the temperature distribution was simulated using finite element method and the processing parameters such as rolling speed, cooling condition, has been discussed to prevent the temperature increases of center wire/bar.

  • An Eulerian finite element method for the analysis of steady state rolling/extrusion of sintered powder metals is presented. Initial guess of the porosity distribution in an Eulerian mesh is obtained from the velocity and scaled pressure field computed by the Consistent Penalty finite element formulations-the standard one and the consistent penalty type one-are invoked for the analysis of strain hardening, dilatant viscoplastic deformation of porous metals. Comparisons of the predicted distributions of porosity to those by a Lagrangian finite element method and by experiments reported in the articles prove the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method.

  • In this study, a rigid-plastic finite element method is applied to simulating a ring rolling process of the inner race cage of a constant velocity joint for the passengers' cars. The ring rolling process is mathematically modeled by several assumptions. The defect formation at the side ends is predicted in detail. The predictions are compared with the experiments and a good agreement is observed in terms of deformed shape.

  • Ring rolling process is simulated by using the general-purpose commercial finite element analysis software, MSC.Superform. Because the deforming region is restricted to the vicinity of the roll gap, only a ring segment spanning the roll gap is analyzed in order to save computation time and cost. First, a plain ring rolling of rectangular cross-section is simulated. Comparisons between computation and experiment show good agreement in the cross-sectional configuration of the deformed ring. Then, a profile ring with an external round groove is analyzed. The rolls with and without groove have been analyzed to compare the amount of side spread. It is found that the grooves in the rolls are effective in reducing the amount of side spread.

  • We conduct finite element simulation of a cross-wedge rolling process using AFDEX 3D. The die is realistically modeled with emphasis on the hatched plicate over the slope or forming region. Coulomb frictional law is used to prevent slip between material and die. Constant shear frictional law is also investigated and it is esmphasized that the constant shear frictional law is improper for cross-wedge rolling simulation.

  • In industrial practice, caliber design in shape rolling depends on the designer's experience, which in general is obtained through costly trial-and error process. on-line model which is relations of mean effective strain, roll force and area reduction is derived from finite element process simultion in bar rolling with three rolls.
