The journal bearings use in machine parts which move relative to each other and those reduce friction and wear of journals. The journal bearings are designed to operate in the hydyodynamic lubrication regime, but elastohydrodynamic lubrication nay occur if the pressures are too high or the running speeds are too low at machine elements. It is the phenomenon that the lubricant film is broken and some parts of surfaces are in rolling contact, so that wear will increase in mixed lubrication regime. The purpose of this study is to minimize the wear rate of journal bearings for extending machine life. The wear mate in mixed lubricated regime is selected as objective function because most of wear of the journal bearings develops in elastohydrodynamic lubrication. The journal bearings we represented by a bearing radius, shaft radius, and bearing width, but the bearing radius only is selected as design variables due to a bearing radius has an influence on friction loss, stability limit velocity, and film parameter, which are used as constraints. For numerical calculation, PLBA, that is a class of the RQP algorithm, is used.
The defects of rail head induced by fatigue and deterioration are mainly classified by two types ; one occurred on the surface of rail head the another occurred on the inner rail head. This study performed the surface irregularity measurement of rail head according to the passing tonnage in the urban railway. Also, we carried out microscopic structure test, chemical component test and micro-hardness test for the specimen which is the used rail on metro line by accumulated passing tonnage. As a result of this study, for new rail, it should be performed initial grinding in order to remove 0.3mm of de-carbonized layer. The preventive-cyclic grinding for preventing RCF defects is proposed two options : grinding by the whole line and grinding by specified sections.

A rotary table is a positioning device used in metalworking for the multiple axes of machine tools, and the utilization trend is increasing with machining efficiency. In the construction of a rotary table, the core technology is a power transfer unit that drives the table, typically a gear type and a roller gear cam type. As the rollers installed on the turret column have rolling movement on the contact surface of the roller gear cam, the roller gear cam type has the advantage of low wear, high load, and fast driving. Therefore, it is currently being replaced by a roller gear cam type. In this study, we researched a 5-axis machining method for the roller gear cam on a rotary table and a new method of applying double roller gear cam curve to reduce the noise and shock between the roller and the cam surface. We implemented the 5-axis machining process in this study using software to generate NC-code and machined the roller gear cams using a Mazak Integrex-200IV. We found that the roller gear cam and turret were able to identify mutual touch status and the noise from the operation of the roller gear cam was substantially reduced.
In recent years, techniques for micro-assembly with high repeatability under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) are required to construct highly functional micro-devices. Adhesion phenomenon is more significant for smaller objects, because adhesional force is proportional to size of the objects while gravitational force is proportional to the third power of it. It is also known that adhesional force between micro-objects exposed to Electron Beam irradiation of SEM increases with the elapsed time. Therefore, mechanical manipulation techniques using a needle-shaped tool by adhesional force are often adopted in basic researches where micro-objects are studied. These techniques, however, have not yet achieved the desired repeatability because many of these could not have been supported theoretically. Some techniques even need the process of trial-and-error. Thus, in this paper, mechanical and adhesional micro-manipulation are analyzed theoretically by introducing new physical factors, such as adhesional force and rolling-resistance, into the kinematic system consisting of a sphere, a needle-shaped tool, and a substrate. Through this analysis, they are revealed that how the micro-sphere behavior depends on the given conditions, and that it is possible to cause the fracture of the desired contact Interfaces selectively by controlling the force direction in which the tool-tip loads to the sphere. Based on the acquired knowledge, a mode diagram, which indicates the micro-sphere behavior for the given conditions, is designed. By referring to this mode diagram, the practical technique of the pick and place manipulation of a micro-sphere under an SEM by the selective interface fracture is proposed.

Objectives: To identify bacterial contamination rates of laryngoscope blades and handles stored in emergency crash carts by hospital and area according to the frequency of intubation attempts. Methods: One hundred forty-eight handles and 71 blades deemed ready for patient use from two tertiary hospitals were sampled with sterile swabs using a standardized rolling technique. Samples were considered negative (not contaminated) if no colonies were present on the blood agar plate after an 18-hour incubation period. Samples were stratified by hospital and according to the frequency of intubation attempts (10 attempts per year) using the ${\chi}^2-test$ and Fisher exact test. Results: One or more species of bacteria were isolated from 4 (5.6%) handle tops, 20 (28.2%) handles with knurled surfaces, and 27 (18.2%) blades. No significant differences were found in microbial contamination levels on the handle tops and blades between the two hospitals and two areas according to the frequency of intubation attempts. However, significant differences were found between the two hospitals and two areas in the level of microbial contamination on the handles with knurled surfaces (p<0.05). Conclusions: Protocols and policies must be reviewed to standardize procedures to clean and disinfect laryngoscope blades and handles; handles should be re-designed to eliminate points of contact with the blade; and single-use, one-piece laryngoscopes should be introduced.

In the present study, the residual stresses can have a significant on the life of structural engineering components. Residual stresses are created by the surface treatment such as shot peening or deep rolling. The objective of this experimental investigation is to study the influence of friction and wear characteristics due to residual stress under dry sliding condition. Friction and wear data were obtained with a specially designed tribometer. Test specimens were made of SUP9(leaf spring material) after they were created residual stress by shot peening treatment. Residual stress profiles were measured at surface by means of the X-ray diffraction. Sliding tests were carried out different contact pressure and same sliding velocity 0.035m/s(50rpm). Leaf spring assembly test used to strain gauge sticked on leaf spring specimen in order to measure interleaf friction of leaf spring. Therefore, we were obtained hysteresis curve. As the residual stresses of surfaces increased, coefficient of friction and wear volume are decreased, but the residual stresses of surfaces are high, and consequently wear volume do not decreased. Coefficient of friction obtained from leaf spring assembly test is lower than that obtained from sliding test. From the results, structural engineering components reduce coefficient of friction and resistant wear in order to have residual stresses themselves.

Rolling noise caused by the contact between the train wheels and rails is the main factor of noise generated by the operation of railway, therefore the features of rail vibration and its correlations with noise radiation should be identified. In this study, noise radiation generated from vibration were predicted by utilizing FE model with boundary element method. Noise radiation generated from vibration were predicted by utilizing FE model with boundary element method, and were compared with the measured noise in order to validate the reliability of the analysis method. In addition, the features of noise radiation according to the rail attenuation were examined in the frequency domain, and the noise radiation has been reduced by approximately 3dB(A) with additional rail damping.
Rapid increase of integrity for recent semiconductor industry highly demands the development of removal technology of contaminated particles in the scale of a few microns or even smaller. It is known that the surface cleaning technology using $CO_2$ snow has its own merits of high efficiency. However, the detailed removal mechanism of particles using this technology is not yet fully understood due to the lack of sophisticated research endeavors. The detachment mechanism of particles from the substrates is known to be belonged in four types; rebounding, sliding, rolling and lifting. In this study, a modeling effort is performed to explain the detachment mechanism of a contaminant particle due to the rebounding caused by the vertical collision of the $CO_2$ snow. The Hertz and Johnson-Kendall-Roberts(JKR) theories are employed to describe the contact, adhesion and deformation mechanisms of the particles on a substrate. Numerical simulations are followed for several representative cases, which provide the perspective views on the dynamic characteristics of the particles as functions of the material properties and the initial inter-particle collision velocity.
An important source of noise from railways is rolling noise caused by wheel and rail vibrations induced by acoustic roughness at the wheel-rail contact. In conventional approaches to predicting rail noise, the rail is regarded as placed in a free space so that the reflection from the ground is not included. However, in order to predict rail noise close to the rail, the effect of the ground should be contained in the analysis. In this study the rail noise reflected from the ground is investigated using the wavenumber domain finite element and boundary element methods. First, two rail models, one using rail attached to the rigid ground and one using rail located above rigid ground, are considered and examined to determine the rigid ground effect in terms of the radiation efficiency. From this analysis, it was found that the two models give considerably different results, so that the distance between the rail and the ground is an important factor. Second, an impedance condition was set for the ground and the effect of the ground impedance on the rail noise was evaluated for the two rail models.
The rapid development of the automobile industry is an important factor that led to the dramatic development of synthetic rubber. The tread part of tire that comes in direct contact with the road surface is related to the service life of the tire. Rubber compounds used in tire treads are often blended with SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) and BR (butadiene rubber) to satisfy physical property requirements. However, when two or more kinds of rubber are blended, phase separation and silica dispersion problems may occur due to non-uniform mixing of the rubber. Therefore, in this study, we synthesized an SBR copolymer with the same composition as that of a typical SBR/BR blend compound by controlling butadiene content during ESBR (emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber) synthesis. Subsequently, silica filled compounds were manufactured using the synthesized ESBR, and their mechanical properties, dynamic viscoelasticity, and crosslinking density were compared with those of the SBR/BR blended compound. When the content of butadiene was increased in the silica filled compound, the cure rate accelerated due to an increased number of allylic positions, which typically exhibit higher reactivity. However, the T-2 compound with increased butadiene content by synthesis less likely to show an increase in crosslink density due to poor silica dispersion. In addition, the T-3 compound containing high cis BR content showed high crosslink density due to its monosulfide crosslinking structure. Because of the phase separation, SBR/BR blend compounds were easily broken and showed similar $M_{100%}$ and $M_{300%}$ values as those of other compounds despite their high crosslink density. However, the developed blend showed excellent abrasion resistance due to the high cis-1,4 butadiene content and low rolling resistance due to the high crosslink density.
