  • It is important to prevent roll failure in hot rolling process for reducing maintenance cost and production loss. The relationship between rolling pass schedule and the work roll wear profile will be presented. The roll wear pattern is related with roll catastrophic failure. The irregular and deep roll wear pattern should be removed by On-line Roll Grinder(ORG) for roll failure prevention. In this study, a computer roll wear prediction model under real process working condition is developed and evaluated with hot rolling pass schedule. The method of building wear calculation functions for center portion abrasion and marginal abrasion respectively was used to develop a work roll wear prediction mathematical model. The three type rolling schedule are evaluated by wear prediction model. The optimum roll grinding methods is suggested for schedule tree rolling technique.

  • Recently, PM-high speed steel(PM-HSS) has reportedly been a good alternative material for rolling mill because of its superior peformance to conventional HSS. This paper has been aimed to investigate the possibility for application to rolling contact element for PM-HSS by X-ray diffraction technique. The X-ray elastic constant for PM-HSS has been found by X-ray diffraction during the four-point bending test. Residual stress and half-value breadth on the contact surface during rolling contact fatigue process by X-ray diffraction have also been measured. The result of this study shows that the application of X-ray diffraction technique to PM-HSS could be as possible alternative material as conventional HSS. Half-value breadth on rolling contact surface by X-ray diffraction is not changed during rolling contact fatigue process. On the other hand, the residual stress is changed. This suggests that dislocation reaction has been hardly occurred in rolling contact, depending on supersaturated carbon in PM-HSS.

  • An experimental study was performed to discover the tribological behaviors of pure silver coated 52100 bearing steel. Pure silver coatings ranging from 80 nm to several micrometers were produced by a thermal evaporation coating method. Experiments using a thrust ball bearing-typed rolling test-rig were performed for the investigations of the influence of coating thickness on the tribological rolling behavior. The existence of optimum film thickness which revealed minimum rolling resistance was discovered. A careful analysis on the contact surfaces for the optimum film thickness has been performed. The contact patches produced by the transferred silver films played an important role for the rolling resistance to keep low.

  • We propose a criterion which predicts wrinkle initiation on workpiece in groove rolling process based on finite element analysis. Fundamental idea introduced in the criterion is to examine the difference between flat rolling which don't' cause wrinkling at all and groove rolling which usually accompanies it. The proposed criterion assumes that irregular distribution of shear strain on workpiece during groove rolling is attributable to the initiation of wrinkling. The proposed criterion has been applied to roughing train in the rod and bar mill of SEAH BESTEEL Inc. A new design for 2nd pass (square roll groove) was suggested, machined and applied. Results reveal that the proposed criterion in this study could point out the location of wrinkle initiation during groove rolling and could reduce onset of wrinkle on final products.

  • Republic of korea has begun operating high speed train service according as KTX service operation starts in 2004. Also, EMU whose maximum speed is over 150 kph will be starting to service with electrification and improvement of existing railroad. Moreover, metropolitan electric railways have begun an express service to increase scheduled speed. Therefore, running resistance of rolling stock becomes more important factor effects on the performance. Running resistance of rolling stock is the factor which is necessary for the performance or operation plan of rolling stock, and it's related to rolling friction, slip friction, drag force, gradient, acceleration, curvature, tunnel condition and so on. It is possible to be calculated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). However it is predicted by experimental equation from running resistance test because of the complex calculation and manifold variables. In this paper, studies about running resistance of rolling stock is introduced, and each term of experimental equation is studied through theoretical approximation. Also, running resistance of rolling stock is estimated by the result of running resistance test, and effects being related to friction, drag force, gradient is examined.

  • A full three-dimensional thermo-coupled rigid-viscoplastic finite element method and the currently developed microstructural evolution system which includes semi-empirical equations suggested by different research groups were used together to form an integrated system of process and micro- structure simulation of hot rolling. The distribution and time histroy of the momechanical variables such as temperature, strain, strain rate, and time during pass and between passes were obtained from the finite element analysis of multipass hot rolling processes. The distribution of metallurgical variables were calculated on the basis of instantaneous thermomechanical data. For the verification of this method the evolution of microstructure in plate rolling and shape rolling was simulated and their results were compared with the data available in the literature. Consequently, this approach makes it possible to describe the realistic evolution of microstructure by avoiding the use of erroneous average value and can be used in CAE of multipass hot rolling.

  • The rolling stock which is used the most frequently by public transportation has to secure reliability and safety. In these, vibration is the important factor which causes of serious problem of rolling stock. By the way, rolling stocks vibration test specific activity that is using translating JIS standard is serious mistake, but it is actuality that is used until present more than ten years. Study wishes to analyze problem of standard of domestic rolling stocks and present countermeasure.

  • As recent demands for cold rolling oil for steel, not only better lubricity, but cost reduction and improvement of work environment are increasingly required. In order to respond these demands, Nihon Parkerizing has developed rolling oils with completely new emulsification system. Comparing with conventional oils, the new system indicates better iron fine removability to maintain oil concentration, due to better iron fine dispersion, and superior mill stain resistance by spray stain test.

  • To fulfill recent requirements for high quality products in steel rolling process, fast responding and easily tunab control system is required and ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic) control system may be one of such alternatives. In this paper characteristics of ILQ control and its application to BUR(Back-Up-Roll) eccentricity in strip rolling mill is discussed and compared to polynomial control approaches. Also the rolling mill model and basic principle to control thickness of srip are introduced with control effect by polynomial methods.
