Development of Process and Equipment for Roll-to-Roll convergence printing technology

  • The process of manufacturing printed electronics using printing technology is attracting attention because its process cost is lower than that of the conventional semiconductor process. This technology, which offers both a lower cost and higher productivity, can be applied in the production of organic TFT (thin film transistor), solar cell, RFID(radio frequency identification) tag, printed battery, E-paper, touch screen panel, black matrix for LCD(liquid crystal display), flexible display, and so forth. In general, in order to implement printed electronics, narrow width and gap printing, registration of multi-layer printing by several printing units, and printing accuracy of under $20\;{\mu}m$ are all required. These electronic products require high precision to the degree of tens of microns - in a large area with flexible material, and mass productivity at low cost. As such, the roll-to-roll printing process is attracting attention as a mass production system for these printed electronic devices. For the commercialization of this process, two basic electronic ink technologies, such as conductive ink and polymers, and printing equipment have to be developed. Therefore, this paper addressed basis design and test to develop fine patterning equipment employing the roll-to-roll printing equipment and electronic ink.

Parameter Analysis for the Lateral Thickness of the Coated Layer to Improve Product Quality in Large Area Roll-to-Roll Slot-Die Coating Process (대면적 롤투롤 슬롯-다이 코팅의 횡 방향 두께 품질 개선을 위한 공정 파라미터 분석)

  • Slot-die coating is well known technique to guarantee a uniformly coated layer and is compatible with roll-to-roll process. In actual roll-to-roll slot-die coating process, the lateral difference of coated layer thickness is observed. An experimental study was performed to improve the coating quality. Coating speed and coating gap were selected as the experimental factors. A full factorial, statistical method was conducted to optimize the process conditions. Based on the results of repeated experiment, the lowest deviation of lateral thickness (700 nm, <10%) was achieved at 10 m/min coating speed and $300{\mu}m$ coating gap. This result has significance because such optimized process guideline can be utilized with all process improvement in various coating applications.

  • The spring-back and bow phenomenon in the roll forming process are important factors regarding the accuracy of evaluation of production goods. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of spring-back and bow phenomenon according to the main variables (forming velocity and roll gap). The material of the forming sheet was high tension steel (SPFH 590), which has been used commonly in recent years. In order to accurately measure the spring-back and bow phenomenon, the forming sheet was formed into a V-shape. The study was applied to OFAT (One Factor at a Time) experimentation, with respect to the experimental variables (the forming speed and the roll gap). In the experimental results, the forming speed had a small influence on the spring-back and bow phenomenon. However, the roll gap had a greater influence on the springback and the bow phenomenon, as opposed to the forming speed.

  • The roll forming process is often used to manufacture long, thin-walled products such as a pipe. The final cross-section is a comparatively simple open-channel, a closed tube section or a complex profile with several bends. In recent years, that process is often applied to the bumper beam in the automotive industries. In this study, a optimal Center Floor Cross Member manufacturing technology, model deign and proper roll-pass sequences can be suggested by forming number of roll-pass and bending angle, and also effects of the process parameters on the final shape formed by roll forming defects were evaluated.

  • For the purpose of rolling hard metals such as silicon steel and non-ferrous metals, the backup roll driven-type mill has been widely used in cold rolling industry. Since the backup roll drive results in horizontal bending of the work rolls and therefore exerted reciprocal action on the roll gap contour, the selection of slim work rolls is very restricted. In this paper, we present an analytic equation based scheme to determine a proper horizontal position of work roll minimizing the horizontal force subject to mechanical constraints.

A Numerical Study of Turbulent Flow, Heat Transfer, and Solidification in Twin-Roil Continuous Casting (쌍롤 연속 주조에서의 난류 유동, 온도 및 응고 예측을 위한 연구)

  • A computer program has been developed for analyzing the two-dimensional, unsteady conservation equations for transport phenomena in the molten region of twin-roll continuous casting in order to predict the turbulent velocity, temperature fields, and solidification process of the molten steel. The energy equation of the cooling roll is solved simultaneously with the conservation equations of molten steel in order to consider heat transfer through the cooling roll. The results show the velocity, temperature and solidification pattern in the molten region with roll temperature as a function of time. The results for velocity and temperature fields with solidification are compared with those without solidification, giving different thermofluid characteristics in the molten region. We also investigated the effects of revolutional speed of roll, superheat and nozzle geometry on the turbulent flow, temperature and solidification in the molten steel and temperature fields in the cooling roll.

  • New carbon equivalent equation for the better prediction for the better prediction of roll force in a continuous hot strip mill has been formulated by applying a neural network method. In predicting roll force of steel strip, carbon equivalent equation which normalize the effects of various alloying elements by a carbon equivalent content is very critical for the accurate prediction of roll force. To overcome the complex relationships between alloying elements and operational variables such as temperature, strain, strain rate and so forth, a neural network method which is effective for multi-variable analysis was adopted in the present work as a tool to determine a proper carbon equivalent equation. The application of newly formulated carbon equivalent equation has increased prediction accuracy of roll force significantly and the effectiveness of neural network method is well confirmed in this study.

  • Roll forming process for the bumper beam of high strength steel is developed by an experimental method. The size of the bumper beam is reduced to 1/1.8 to save development time and cost. The developed forming rolls are installed in the small three-stage roll forming machine and roll forming experiments are carried out. It is found that the experimental method using small forming machine is effective in developing roll forming process for the bumper beam of high strength steel.

  • This paper presents an active roll motion control of a passenger vehicle. The roll controller is designed in the framework of $H_{\infty}$ control scheme based on the 3 DOF vehicle model taking into consideration parameter variations, which affect the roll dynamics, and unmodeled high frequency dynamics for robustness and performance. In order to investigate the feasibility of the active roll control system in a car, its performance is evaluated by simulation in a full vehicle model with nonlinear tire characteristics under various operating conditions. Finally, in order to enhance the performance in a transient region taking into account the limited bandwidth of the actuating module, a hybrid control strategy is presented.
