  • This paper presents a navigation system based on the tactical communication and vision system in outdoor environments which is applied to unmanned robot for perimeter surveillance operations. GPS errors of robot are compensated by the reference station of C2(command and control) vehicle and WiBro(Wireless Broadband) is used for the communication between two systems. In the outdoor environments, GPS signals can be easily blocked due to trees and buildings. In this environments, however, vision system is very efficient because there are many features. With the feature MAP around the operation environments, the robot can estimate the position by the image matching and pose estimation. In the navigation system, thus, operation modes is switched by navigation manager according to some environment conditions. The experimental results show that the unmanned robot can estimate the position very accurately in outdoor environment.

  • We propose a novel method for object recognition using the smart tag system with a stereo vision on a pan-tilt mechanism. We developed a smart tag which included IRED device. The smart tag is attached onto the object. We also developed a stereo vision system which pans and tilts for the object image to be the centered on each whole image view. A Stereo vision system on the pan-tilt mechanism can map the position of IRED to the robot coordinate system by using pan-tilt angles. And then, to map the size and pose of the object for the robot to coordinate the system, we used a simple model-based vision algorithm. To increase the possibility of tag-based object recognition, we implemented our approach by using as easy and simple techniques as possible.

  • The task environment of a robot is changing rapidly and task itself becomes complicated due to current industrial trends of multi-product and small lot size production. A convenient user-interfaced off-line programming(OLP) system is being developed in order to overcome the difficulty in teaching a robot task. Using the OLP system, operators can easily teach robot tasks off-line and verify feasibility of the task through simulation of a robot prior to the on-line execution. However, some task errors are inevitable by kinematic differences between the robot model in OLP and the actual robot. Three calibration methods using image information are proposed to compensate the kinematic differences. These methods compose of a relative position vector method, three point compensation method, and base line compensation method. To compensate a kinematic differences the vision system with one monochrome camera is used in the calibration experiment.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm of path planning and obstacle avoidance for autonomous mobile robots with vision system that is working in unknown environments. Distance variation technique is used in path planning to approach the target and avoid obstacles in work space as well . In this approach, the Sobel operator is employed to detect edges of obstacles and the distances between the mobile robot and the obstacles are measured. Fuzzy rules are used for trajectory planning and obstacle avoidance to improve the autonomy of mobile robots. It is shown by computer simulation that the proposed algorithm is superior to the vector field approach which sometimes traps the mobile robot into some local obstacles. An autonomous mobile robot with single vision is developed for experiments. We also show that the developed mobile robot with the proposed algorithm is navigating very well in complex unknown environments.

  • This paper presents the robot vision control schemes using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) method for the slender bar placement in the appearance of obstacles during robot movement. The vision system model used for this study involves the six camera parameters($C_1{\sim}C_6$). In order to develop the robot vision control scheme, first, the six parameters are estimated. Then, based on the estimated parameters, the robot's joint angles are estimated for the slender bar placement. Especially, robot trajectory caused by obstacles is divided into three obstacle regions, which are beginning region, middle region and near target region. Finally, the effects of number of obstacles using the proposed robot's vision control schemes are investigated in each obstacle region by performing experiments of the slender bar placement.

  • The vision system model used for this study involves the six parameters that permits a kind of adaptability in that relationship between the camera space location of manipulable visual cues and the vector of robot joint coordinates is estimated in real time. Also this vision control method requires the number of cameras to transform 2-D camera plane from 3-D physical space, and be used irrespective of location of cameras, if visual cues are displayed in the same camera plane. Thus, this study is to investigate the optimal number of cameras used for the developed vision control system according to the change of the number of cameras. This study is processed in the two ways : a) effectiveness of vision system model b) optimal number of cameras. These results show the evidence of the adaptability of the developed vision control method using the optimal number of cameras.

  • A two-dimensional moving target is necessarily captured by a 5 dot robot system using a robot vision technique. Here, a robot vision system with a visual skill so that it can take information for a moving target or object, specially two dimensionally moving, is introduced and its algorithm and control strategy are presented associated with it. The tracking algorithm is proposed and its performance is verified by experiment. The camera first captures the object, then it captures again after certain second. The position difference generates the horizontal and vertical velocities of the moving target, hence the final destination is estimated at gripping line. At the same time, the robot s...
