  • In this paper, a vision-based roadway detection algorithm for an automated vehicle control system, based on roadway sign information on roads, is proposed. First, in order to detect roadway signs, the color scene image is enhanced under hue-invariance. Fuzzy logic is employed to simplify the enhanced color image into a binary image and the binary image is morphologically filtered. Then, an effective algorithm of locating signs based on binary rank order transform (BROT) is utilized to extract signs from the image. This algorithm performs better than those previously presented. Finally, the inner shapes of roadway signs with curving roadway direction information are recognized by neural networks. Experimental results show that the new detection algorithm is simple and robust, and performs well on real sign detection. The results also show that the neural networks used can exactly recognize the inner shapes of signs even for very noisy shapes.

  • The double-lane arrangement model is frequently used in underground coal mines because it is beneficial to improve the mining efficiency of the working face. When the double-lane arrangement is used, the service time of the reserved roadway increases by twice, which causes several difficulties for the maintenance of the roadway. Given the severe non-uniform deformation of the reserved roadway in the Buertai Coal Mine, the stress distribution law in the mining area, the failure characteristics of roadway and the control effect of support resistance (SR) were systematically studied through on-site monitoring, FLAC 3D numerical simulation, mechanical model analysis. The research shows that the deformation and failure of the reserved roadway mainly manifested as asymmetrical roof sag and floor heave in the region behind the working face, and the roof dripping phenomenon occurred in the severe roof sag area. After the coal is mined out, the stress adjustment around goaf will happen to some extent. For example, the magnitude, direction, and confining pressure ratio of the principal stress at different positions will change. Under the influence of high-stress rotation, the plastic zone of the weak surrounding rock is expanded asymmetrically, which finally leads to the asymmetric failure of roadway. The existing roadway support has a limited effect on the control of the stress field and plastic zone, i.e., the anchor cable reinforcement cannot fully control the roadway deformation under given conditions. Based on obtained results, using roadway grouting and advanced hydraulic support during the secondary mining of the panel 22205 is proposed to ensure roadway safety. This study provides a reference for the stability control of roadway with similar geological conditions.

  • Influenced by the alternating effects of dynamic and static pressure during the mining process of close range coal seams, the surrounding rock support of cross mining roadway is difficult and the deformation mechanism is complex, which has become an important problem affecting the safe and efficient production of coal mines. The paper takes the inclined longwall mining of the 10304 working face of Zhongheng coal mine as the engineering background, analyzes the key strata fracture mechanism of the large inclined right-angle trapezoidal mining field, explores the stress distribution characteristics and transmission law of the surrounding rock of the roadway affected by the mining of the inclined coal seam, and proposes a segmented and hierarchical support method for the cross mining roadway affected by the mining of the close range coal seam group. The research results indicate that based on the derived expressions for shear and tensile fracture of key strata, the ultimate pushing distance and ultimate suspended area of a right angle trapezoidal mining area can be calculated and obtained. Within the cross mining section, along the horizontal direction of the coal wall of the working face, the peak shear stress is located near the middle of the boundary. The cracks on the floor of the cross mining roadway gradually develop in an elliptical funnel shape from the shallow to the deep. The dual coupling support system composed of active anchor rod support and passive U-shaped steel shed support proposed in this article achieves effective control of the stability of cross mining roadways, which achieves effective control of floor by coupling active support and preventive passive support to improve the strength of the surrounding rock itself. The research results are of great significance for guiding the layout, support control, and safe mining of cross mining roadways, and to some extent, can further enrich and improve the relevant theories of roof movement and control.

  • This paper proposes gob-side entry retaining by roof break and filling in thick-layer soft rock conditions based on the thick-layer soft rock roof strata migration law and the demand for non-pillar gob-side entry retaining projects. The functional expressions of main roof subsidence are derived for three break roof direction conditions: lateral deflection toward the roadway, lateral deflection toward the gob and vertically to the roof. These are derived according to the load-bearing boundary conditions of the main roadway roof stratum. It is concluded that the break roof angle is an important factor influencing the stability of gob-side entry retaining surrounding rock. This paper studies the stress distribution characteristics and plastic damage scope of gob-side entry retaining integrated coal seams, as well as the roof strata migration law and the supporting stability of caving structure filled on the break roof layer at the break roof angles of $-5^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$ are studied. The simulation results of numerical analysis indicate that, the stress concentration and plastic damage scope to the sides of gob-side entry retaining integrated coal at the break roof angle of $5^{\circ}$ are reduced and shearing stress concentration of the caving filling body has been eliminated. The disturbance of coal mining to the roadway roof and loss of carrying capacity are mitigated. Field tests have been carried out on air-return roadway 5203 with the break roof angle of $5^{\circ}$. The monitoring indicates that the break roof filling section and compaction section are located at 0-45 m and 45-75 m behind the working face, respectively. The section from 75-100 m tends to be stable.

  • This research analyzed the factors for crack generation and proposed the recommended construction methods for the efficient crack control of underground RC box structures under the roadway. The selected main factors were: details of contraction joints, ratio of crack control rebars in longitudinla direction, and placement of flyash concrete. These factors were tested on the actual structures and the significance of each factor was analyzed, The results show that the flyash concrete placement and the inducting minor cracks in a certain direction by adopting contraction joints are practical and efficient methods to control cracks. The significance of crack generating factors increases as the sectional loss of contraction joint spacing increase. It was recommeded that the sectional loss should be higher than 20 percent to maximize the crack generating effects. It was not possible to verify the effect of crack control rebar spacing, but it was estimated that the ratio of crack control rebar should be increased to minimize cracks.

  • Reversible lanes in urban intersections is used to efficiently control vehicles, reduce traffic congestion and increase the capacity of a roadway. But by far traffic control systems in urban intersections are simple and manually operated by police officers. In this study, we present a hybrid algorithm that intelligently resolve the moving direction of reversible lanes to efficiently manage the flow of traffic at intersection. The proposed algorithm consists of three stages:(i) fuzzy inference method to get the efficiency of moving direction, (ii) a provisional decision whether to change the reversible lane to different direction, (iii) a final evaluation criterion for changing the directions of the reversible lanes. The fuzzy inference results of efficiency are shown by using matlab application.

  • Baehuryeong tunnel connects Chuncheon with Hwacheon in Kangwon, Korea, This tunnel is a single tunnel with 5,057 m long and two bidirectional lanes which will be extended into low lanes in the future. The estimated construction period of Baehuryeong tunnel is approximately 55 months. This tunnel will become the longest bidirectional roadway tunnel in Korea. Compared to a twin tunnel, a bidirectional single tunnel has two major disadvantages with regard to the ventilation system and ease of escape during fire. For these reasons, a service tunnel and the transverse ventilation system are planned first time in Korea. In case of fire, the tunnel ventilation design aims to maintain a smoke free layer for passenger evacuation. The geology of Baehuryeong tunnel site is mainly composed of gneiss and granite. Baehuryeong fault is a mainly large scale fault which stands vertical and parallels with tunnel direction. The influenced zone of this fault is within 70 m. Baehuryeong tunnel was designed that it was separated with the distance of more than 100 m from Baehuryeong fault for its safety.

  • In this paper, a method of the decision of the road direction for ALV(Autonomous Land Vehicle) road following by region-based segmentation is presented. The decision of the road direction requires extracting road regions from images in real-time to guide the navigation of ALV on the roadway. Two thresholds to discriminate between road and non-road region in the image are easily decided, using knowledge of problem region and polygonal approximation that searches multiple peaks and valleys in histogram of a road image. The most likely road region of the binary image is selected from original image by these steps. The location of a vanishing point to indicate the direction of the road can be obtained applying it to X-Y profile of the binary road region again. It can successfully steer a ALV along a road reliably, even in the presence of fluctuation of illumination condition, bad road surface condition such as hidden boundaries, shadows, road patches, dirt and water stains, and unusual road condition. Pyramid structure also saves time in processing road images and a real-time image processing for achieving navigation of ALV is implemented. The efficacy of this approach is demonstrated using several real-world road images.

  • Telematics services include automatic location tracking for emergency rescue, which is available for use in case of a car accident due to falling off roadways. This paper presents a simulation study on how far a car will fall before it hits the ground if it drops off of a roadway due to an accident or a natural disaster. The greatest horizontal distance the falling car can travel is presented in this paper, based on the assumption that air resistance as well as the direction and degree of acceleration due to gravity is negligible. This paper also presents the depth of the dent caused by the car sinking into the ground, the time it took for the car to fall free, and the velocity at which it travelled and horizontal distance it traveled. In this paper, the damage done to cars that crash into the ground and the dangers thereof are graphically represented.
