The study aims to assess the quality of bank filtrate in relation to streamflow and physico-chemical properties of the stream. Turbidity, pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) of Nakdong River and riverbank filtrate were statistically analyzed. The physico-chemical properties of riverbank filtrate were measured from irregularly different seven pumping wells every day. Autocorrelation analyses were conducted to the qualities of stream water and bank filtrated water. Temperature, pH and DO of streamflow shows strong linearity and long memory effect, indicating the effect of seasonal air temperature and rainy season. Temperature of riverbank filtrate shows weak linearity and weak memory, indicating differently from the trend of stream temperature. Turbidity of steramflow shows strong linearity and long memory effect, while turbidity of riverbank filtrate indicates weak linearity and weak memory. Cross-correlation analysis shows low relation between turbidity, pH, temperature and DO of riverbank filtrate and those of streamflow. Turbidity of streamflow was largely affected by the streamflow rate, showing a similar trend with autocorrelation function of streamflow rate. The turbidity of riverbank filtrate has a lag time of 25 hours. This indicates that turbidity of streamflow in a dry season has very low effect on the turbidity of riverbank filtrate, and a high turbidity of the stream in a rainy season has a fairly low effect on the turbidity of riverbank filtrate.
Chemical analyses were conducted for Nakdong River water and riverbank filtrate in Daesan-Myeon area, Changwon City in 2005. Chemical components show different trends in wet season (June, July, August and September) and dry season (the other months). The patterns of chemical variation are classified into four types. Chemical components belonging Type I, as Na and $HCO_3$, show decrease in concentration during wet season and increase in concentration during dry season for both Nakdong River water and the riverbank filtrate. Chemical components belonging Type II, as Mg and $SO_4$, show decrease in concentration during wet season and increase in concentration during dry season for Nakdong River water while show the opposite trend for the riverbank filtrate. Chemical components belonging Type III, as Cl and $NO_3$, show increase in concentration from the start of wet season and high concentration during dry season for both Nakdong River water and the riverbank filtrate. Chemical components belonging Type IV, as Fe, show increase in concentration during wet season and decrease in concentration during dry season for both Nakdong River water and the riverbank filtrate.
Seasonal fluctuation of groundwater level by pumping amount and stream discharge at the riverbank filtrate site adjacent to the Nakdong River in Daesan-Myeon was characterized. Groundwater level fluctuation shows increase in wet season (June, July, August and September) and decrease in dry season (the other months). Seasonal variation of pumping amount shows similar trend to the groundwater fluctuation due to higher consumption of potable water in summer. The relation of specific capacity, Nakdong River and pumping quantity was analyzed. The logarithmic relationship between specific capacity and the stream discharge gives high correlation coefficient, 0.96. This fact indicates that the increase of stream discharge rate reduces the rate of drawdown in the pumping area in wet season.
Experiments were performed to estimate the organic release from the aquifer soil in riverbank and/or riverbed filtration via a kinetic approach. Organic release was assumed as a reaction of first order regarding concentrations in both soil and water phases. The reaction rate constants were obtained by comparing the model predictions with the experimental data of organic release reaction and the equilibrium distribution of organic matter between water and soil phases. Results show that the organic release from the aquifer soil was not negligible under normal conditions in Korea reaching 4.7mg-COD/L-day. This indicates that manganese and iron start to be released from aquifer soil in the riverbank filtration in the middle reach of the Nakdong river if the travel time of the filtrate exceeds about 5 days. It was also seen that the COD of the soil organic matter was 0.89mg-COD/mg-OM and that 65% of the COD was BOD5.
