Groynes are installed generally to protect the riverside or the river bank from the erosion caused by water flows by controlling the flow direction and velocity in rivers. In the past, groynes were used to secure enough depth of water in canals. As there has been a growing interest in river restoration and the natural river maintenance since 2000, groynes are proposed as a major environmental hydraulic structure because the flow control and various river bed conditions around the groyne can contribute to habitat functions. Groynes are typically installed in a series. In designing groyne series, groyne spacing is an important factor because the flow changes in the main canal and the flow inside the groyne area occurs variably depending on the groyne spacing. This study provide information to determine the groyne spacing suitable for the purpose of the groyne by examining the flows that variably changes according to the groyne spacing and angle in the recirculation zone of the groyne field. In particular, the formation of vortex, the location of vortex core and the water flow near the river bank, all of which occur in the recirculation zone inside the groyne area, were mainly analyzed to examine the flow characteristics near the river bank that influences the safety of the river bank area. The results of the experiment will serve as important basic data to examine changes in the river bed inside the groyne area as well as the safety of river banks following the installation of groyne series.
The change of environmental factors with flow rates were studied quantitatively for two rivers, the Nakdong River and the Sin stream, which have different basins in ecosystem structures, during short period after a heavy rain. In the Nakdong River, transparency, DO, alkalinity and hardness were negatively correlated with the flow rate by logarithmic function, but the concentration of SiO2 was relatively constant regardless of the flow chage. In the Sin stream, transparency, alkalinity, hardness and the concentration of NH3-N, NO2-N and SO4= showed negative correlation with the flow rate by logarithmic function. The ratios of maximum to minimum values for aquatic environmental factors during the samller than that for flow rate in the respective rivers (28 in the Nakdong R.; 50 in the Sin S.). Immediately after the heavy rain, the concentrations of NO2-N, NH3-N and PO4-P in the Sin stream were 8, 6 and 1 times as high as those in the Nakdong River, respectively, but in the stable flow state, those became 94, 25 and more than 10 times, respectively. The load for most of the dissolved environmental constituents changed similarly to the flow rate in both rivers. It is notable that, at the stable flow state, the loads for NH3-N (59g/sec) and NO2-N (3.3g/sec) in the Sin stream were 4.3 and 1.3 times as high as those in the Nakdong River.
The estimations of flow characteristics and river-bed erosion or sedimentation are very important for hydraulic structure design, floodplain management, and especially, river management. The objective of the study is therefore to estimate the change of flow characteristics and river-bed change due to a hydraulic structure construction. With 11.65 km study area of the Geum River which are located in downstream of Daecheong Dam, flow characteristics and river-bed change were estimated based on the RMA2 and SED2D model. As the result of the study, the increase of river-bed sedimentation in upstream and river-bed erosion in downstream were occurred by the construction of hydraulic structure.
Duration curves describe the percentage of time that a certain water quality (total/fecal coliform (=TC/FC)) or discharge is exceeded. The curves methodology are usually based on daily records and are useful in estimating how many days per year and event will be exceeded. The technique was further applied to estimated TC/FC loading to the Geumho River, using the daily mean flow rate and TC/FC concentration data during January, 2001 and December, 2011 for the Geumhogang6 (=Seongseo water level station) where an automated monitoring station is located in Gangchang-bridge. Low flow of the Seongseo (=11.1 cms) was equivalent to 75.3% on an exceedance probability scale. Load Duration curve for TC/FC loading at the Seongseo was constructed. Standard load duration curve was constructed with the water quality criteria for class III (TC/FC concentration = 5000/1000 CFU/ 100 mL). By plotting TC/FC observed load duration curve with standard load duration curve, it could be revealed that water quality do not meet the desired water quality for 68.8/11.2% on an exceedance probability scale. IF linear correlation between flow rate and coliform concentration is assumed, it can be interpreted that water quality exceed desired criteria when daily average flow rate is over 11.9/109.9 cms.
Streamflow is typically divided into two components that are direct runoff and baseflow, it is required to analyze and estimate behaviors of those two flow components to understand watershed characteristics so that watershed management plan can be effective in pollutant reductions. Since pollutant load behaviors in a stream or river are variable by flow component behaviors, best management practices need to be applied in a watershed based on the pollutant load behaviors varying with flow components. Thus, baseflow behaviors were analyzed separating baseflow from streamflow data collected from fifteen streamflow gaging stations in the 4 major river watersheds which are the Han river, Nakdong river, Guem river, and Yeongsan Somjin river watersheds. Moreover, precipitation trends throughout the 4 River Systems were investigated, thus daily precipitation data were collected from sixty-five locations. The Hank river watershed displayed the largest precipitation (925.2 mm) in summer but the lowest precipitation (71.8 mm) in winter, indicating the watershed has the most fluctuating precipitation characteristic. While the precipitation trends in the Four River Systems varied, a distinct feature in baseflow trends was not found, moreover baseflow percentages to streamflow were typically greater than 50% in the Four River Systems. As shown in this study, it would be expected significant amount of pollutants could be contributed to the stream in the form of baseflow at the watershed.

The Citarum River Basin is the biggest river basin in West Java Province, Indonesia and it plays strategic roles in providing water for irrigation, domestic and industrial uses, and power generation, besides controlling the flood during rainy season. Flowing through seven major cities makes the river flow and water demand are vulnerable to land use change around the river. The present water resources management has involved the regulator, operator, and users in deciding an appropriate water management plan for the entire basin. The plan includes an operation plan for three reservoirs, construction or maintenance of the river channel, and water allocation for all users along the river. Following this plan, a smaller operation group will execute and evaluates the plan based on the actual flow condition. Recently, a deforestation, environment degradation, river sedimentation, a rapid growth of population and industry, also public health become new issues that should be considered in water basin planning. Facing these arising issues, a new development program named ICWRMIP was established to advance the existing management system. This program includes actions to strengthen institutional collaboration, do the restoration and conservation of the river environment, improve water quality and public health, also advance the water allocation system. At present, the water allocation plan is created annually based on a forecasted flow data and water usage prediction report. Sometimes this method causes a difficulty for the operator when the actual flow condition is not the same as the prediction. Improving existing system, a lot of water allocation studies, including a development of the database and water allocation simulation model have been placed to help stakeholders decide the suitable planning schemes. In the future, this study also tries to contribute in advancing water allocation planning by creating an optimization model which ease stakeholders discover a suitable water allocation plan for individual users.

The physical components of a river, such as water surface width/river width ratio, water level, and flow velocity vary according to different flowrates. Moreover, the riverside landscapes are greatly affected by the change of physical components of the stream or river. This paper provides an analysis of the influence of changing physical components of a river on the riverside landscape using a survey-based quantification method. The questionnaire was developed based on current literature, and was submitted to 326 people who each visited a representative station along the riverside. This survey was implemented three times at each representative station during periods of different flowrates. The results of this analysis and survey have Produced an understanding of the relationship between the variation of physical components and riverside landscapes. Survey results about the flow comparison are summarized as follows. Viewing riverside landscapes, most respondents are sensitive to the change of the flow velocity and prefer high water levels to low water levels. As a whole, respondents prefer abundant stream flows and moderate flow velocity in which they can perceive the flow of water. The minimum instream flows for riverside landscapes is estimated at each representative station by using a survey-based quantification method, and the estimated results of some representative stations were greater than the mean monthly flow at each station. The result of this analysis shows that establishing minimum instream flows for riverside landscapes is not only a technical problem, but also a legal problem. Therefore, in the to establish the instream flows in a river, the estimated results have to be considered as a relative standard. Regarding the survey results, respondents' satisfaction level didn't show any clear inclination according to the variation of various hydraulic properties. In determining the minimum instream flow using such an inquiry method, the structure of riverside scenery may vary according to the change of seasons or months. Therefore, to determine a consistent general inclination about the flow rate, it is necessary to have more detailed flow rates for each season or month combined with more inquiries.
River bank filtration techniques seek to improve river water quality via natural processes occurring when river water is induced to a river bank. When water is pumped from multiple wells, phenomenon known as well interference affect pumping rates. Pumping wells of a bank filtration facility are connected by pipelines. In theses cases well interference is caused not only by groundwater drawdown but also by pipe headloss which depend on flow rates. In this work a comprehensive analytical method which handles groundwater flow and pipe flow is used to evaluate interferences and ratios of river water in pumping wells. A realistic case was used as an example.
The Brazos River is one of the longest rivers contained entirely in the state of Texas, flowing over 700 miles from northwest Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. Today, the Brazos River Authority and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality interest in drought protection plan, waterpower project, and allowing the appropriation of water system-wide and water right within the Brazos River Basin to meet water needs of customers like farmers and local civilians in the future. Especially, this purpose of this paper primarily intended to provide the data for the engineering guidelines and make easily geological mapping tool. In the Brazos River basin, many stream-flow gage station sites are not working, and they can not provide stream-flow data sets enough for development of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) for use in the evaluation of proposed and existing dams and other impounding structures. Integrated GIS-Spatial Interpolation (GIS-SI) tool are composed of two parts; (1) extended GIS technique (new making interface for hydrological regionalization parameters plus classical GIS mapping skills), (2) Spatial Interpolation technique using weighting factors from kriging method. They are obtained from the relationship among location and elevation of geological watershed and existing stream-flow datasets. GIS-SI technique is easily used to compute parameters which get drainage areas, mean daily/monthly/annual precipitation, and weighted values. Also, they are independent variables of multiple linear regressions for simulation at un gaged stream-flow sites. In this study, GIS-SI technique is applied to the Brazos river basin in Texas. By assuming the ungaged flow at the sites of Palo Pinto, Bryan and Needville, the simulated daily/monthly/annual time series are compared with observed time series. The simulated daily/monthly/annual time series are highly correlated with and well fitted to the observed times series.
An understanding of temporal trends of stream flows can help in the river management and the water resources planning for natural circumstances and human communities. Changes in temperature, precipitation, flow, and land use (agriculture, flood prevention activities, reservoir operation, interbasin diversion, etc.) are all eventually reflected in the flow pattern of the river. An assumption that the stationarity of the hydrologic series implying time-invariant characteristics of the time series accepted in water structure designs can no longer be valid if the flow changes as a result of the climate change or the stream flow use. Therefore, the identification and description of the characteristics of changes in hydrologic time series is a very important task in the river basin management. In this study, the statistical tests on the flow change forced by excess water diversions in the Sumjin River basin were performed by ways of single variable and time series variable comparisons. The tests showed that currently the Sumjin River basin statistically keeps its homogeneity in annual streamflow series, but the changed situation has been appeared in dry season streamflow series.
