Variations of Calcium, Bicarbonate, and Cation in the Lacustrine Zone by Interannual Differences in Up-River Discharge

  • Monthly up-river discharge in the riverine zone analysis resulted in large interannual variations and differences in calcium ($Ca^{2+}$), bicarbonate ($HCO_3^-$), and cations in the lacustrine zone (Lz) of Daecheong Reservoir during the wet year (Wy, 1993) vs. dry year (Dy, 1994). Total up-river discharge in the Wy was four times that of the Dy, and the up-river discharge in July~August of the Wy was eight times greater than that of same period of Dy. Annual water retention time in the Lz showed large difference between the two years. Water residence time (WRT) was minimum when the up-river discharge peaked, whereas the WRT was maximum when the up-river discharge was at minimal condition. This peak discharge from the up-river on early July reduced residence time in the Lz on mid-July~late July. Monthly pattern, based on data of May~November, was similar between the two years, but, but mean retention time in the Wy was 50 days shorter than in the Dy. Such hydrology, up-river discharge, and WRT reduced $Ca^{2+}$, $HCO_3^-$, and cations in the Lz. At low up-river discharge in Wy during April~May, the cation content of Ca+Mg+Na+K averaged 1.17meq $L^{-1}$ (range=1.09-1.26meq $L^{-1}$), but as the up-river discharge increased suddenly, the values decreased. Seasonal fluctuations of $Ca^{2+}$ showed exactly same pattern with bicarbonate ion of $HCO_3^-$. The minimum $Ca^{2+}$ (0.03meq $L^{-1}$) was occurred in the early August of wet year and coincided with the minimum $HCO_3^-$. These results suggest that the magnitude of variation in $Ca^{2+}$, bicarbonate, and cations in the lacustrine zone is directly determined by the peak magnitude of up-river discharge. The magnitude of up-river discharge determined water retention time and the magnitude of ionic dilution in the lacustrine zone, resulting in functional changes of the ecosystem.

하천수 취수량 분석을 위한 전력량법의 적용성 연구 (A study on the applicability of power usage method for the analysis of river water intake)

  • 하천수의 체계적이고 통합적인 관리를 위한 필수 전제로, 하천으로 공급되고, 하천에서 방류되는 유량 등의 기초자료 확보가 필요하다. 현행되는 하천수 사용 허가제도에 의하면 2017년 허가시설 중 59.1%는 유량 계측기기가 없는 것으로 확인되었고, 특히 농업용수의 경우, 보고량의 상당부분이 사용자의 자발적인 보고로 이루어져 신뢰성 있는 자료의 확보가 어려운 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 양수장의 전력사용량을 통해 유량을 산정하는 간접 유량 계측방법을 적용하여 경제적이고 신뢰성 있는 유량자료의 확보에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 특히, 전력량법에 의해 산정된 유량이 하천의 수위에 따라 실측 유량과 차이가 나는 점에 집중하여, 하천수위를 반영한 전력량법의 개선 및 유량자료의 정확도 향상에 대한 적용성 연구를 수행하였다. 하천수위를 고려한 전력량법으로 산정된 유량을 회귀분석, 백분율 차이, 평균 제곱근 오차 등의 상관성 분석 방법 등을 이용하여 분석한 결과, 기존의 전력량법과 비교하여 보다 더 실측 유량에 근사한 결과를 산정하는 것으로 확인하였다. 이를 통해, 양수장에서는 기존의 전력량법으로도 신뢰성 있는 유량 자료를 확보할 수 있지만, 하천의 수위 변동폭이 큰 지점에서 개선된 전력량법을 사용한다면, 보다 정확한 하천수 취수량 자료를 확보할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

하상계수가 큰 하천의 하도형성유량 산정 (Channel-forming Discharge Evaluation for Rivers with High Coefficients of River Regime)

  • 하천 정비 및 하천 복업사업의 기준유량이 되는 하도형성유량 산정은 안정하도 설계시 반드시 선행되어야 하는 것이다. 국내의 경우 하도형성유량 산정방법에 대한 연구가 많이 수행되지 않아 특정패턴을 도출하기가 어려운 실정이다. 국내하천의 경우 외국의 주요하천과 비교하여 하상계수가 크게 나타나는 특성으로 인해 외국사례를 국내에 적용하기에 어려움이 있다. 따라서 현재 구하도 복원이 진행 되고 있거나 계획되어 있는 만경강, 청미천, 함평천을 대상으로 하도형성유량 산정을 위해 만제유량, 특정 재현기간별 유량, 유효유량을 산정해보고 각각의 상호관계를 분석하여 하상계수가 큰 국내하천에 적용 가능한 하도형성유량을 제안하고자 한다. 만제유량은 대상유역의 지형자료를 이용한 HEC-RAS 모의를 통해 산정하였으며 특정 재현기간별 유량과 유효유량은 대상구간의 유량, 하상토, 유사 자료를 이용하여 산정하였다. 산정결과 하상계수가 큰 하천에서는 유효유량이 만제유량보다 크게 나타났으며 하상계수와 관련하여 특정 재현기간별 유량은 일관성 있는 특징이 없는 것으로 나타났다.

Impacts of dam discharge on river environments and phytoplankton communities in a regulated river system, the lower Han River of South Korea

  • To understand the effects of fluctuations in dam discharge due to river environments and phytoplankton communities, we monitored such environments and phytoplankton communities biweekly, from February 2001 to February 2002 and from February 2004 to February 2005, in the lower Han River (LHR), South Korea. The phytoplankton abundance during the dry season was approximately two times higher than that during the rainy season. In particular, fluctuations in diatom assemblages, which constituted over 70% of the total phytoplankton abundance, were affected severely by the changes in the discharge. When a large quantity of water in a dam was discharged into the LHR, the conductivity and the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) decreased rapidly, whereas the concentrations of suspended solids (SS), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved silica (DSi) increased immediately. Time-delayed relationship also revealed that the dam discharge had an immediately significant negative relationship with phytoplankton abundance. On the whole, fluctuations in phytoplankton communities in the LHR were influenced much more by hydrodynamics such as dam discharge than by the availability of nutrients. Thus, the variability in these concentrations usually parallels the strength of river flow that is associated with summer rainfall, with higher values during periods of high river discharge.

유사량 산정에 관한 연구 (밀양강을 중심으로) (A Study on Sediment Load in the Milyang River)

  • This study is carried out to estimate the rate of sediment transportation both to measure the amount of suspended and bedload sediment that moves on or near the river bed and passes through the cross section of a river in unit time, with suspended and bed load samplers used for the Milyang river and to determine the most satisfactory and convenient formula of some formulas for sediment discharge by comparing the measured rate with the calculated rate. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1) The interrelationship (1) between the total discharge and the total sediment discharge (2) between discharge and suspended sediment load and (3) between discharge and bed load in the Milyang river are (1) i) 4$\leq$Q$\leq$100 C.M.S. Qr=0. 00272 Q0.70 (kg/sec) ii) 150$\leq$Q$\leq$800 C.M.S. Qr=0. 4807 Q0.46 (kg/sec) (2) Qs~=0. 07576 Q1.02 (kg/sec) (3) QB=0. 00957 Q0.44 (kg/sec) 2) The rate of suspended sediment load to total sediment discharge is found to be about; 99%. The suspended load is shown to be almost wash load which consists of silt and clay. 3) The relation between the total discharge and the suspended sediment load that are measured at three medium and small rivers in Korea is Qs=0. 13831 Q0.97 (kg/sec) 4) Brown's formula is determined to be the most convenient formula for application and comparison with observed data obtained for the Milyang river.

태화강 갑조부의 저수위 수위-유량곡선 개선 (Improvement of Low Water Level Rating Curve in Tidal River Taehwa)

  • 감조하천에서는 수위, 유량과 조석이 상호관련이 있다. 특히 저수위에서 조석의 영향을 감안하지 않은 수위-유량관계는 부정확하다. 본 논문에서는 수위와 조위의 수면차를 변수로 하여 감조하천에서의 유량을 계산할 수 있도록 하였다. 이를 위해 태화강 감조부에 위치한 울산수위관측소 지점의 저수위 유량을 수위 및 수위와 조위의 수면차로 나타내는 다중회귀식을 개발하였으며, 기존의 수위-유량곡선식과 비교한 결과 우수한 적용성을 확인하였다.

국내 지방하천의 유사량과 하상변동 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study of Sediment Discharge and Bed Change Characteristics of the Local Rivers in Korea)

  • 본 연구는 하천 계획수립 및 활용을 위하여 국내 하천을 대상으로 적합한 유사량 추정공식과 장 단기 하상변동을 정량적으로 제시한다. 산지 및 도시하천을 대상으로 유사특성을 분석하고, 총유사량 과 장 단기 하상변동을 검토하기 위하여 기존의 유사량 추정공식과 HEC-RAS 4.1 모형 및 CCHE2D 모형을 적용하였다. 본 연구의 수행으로 인해 얻어진 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수정 Einstein 공식을 적용하여 추정한 총유사량이 해당 하천에 가장 적합한 것으로 판단되었다. 둘째, 대상하천의 중 장기적인 하도관리를 위하여 수위-유량 관계곡선, 부유사량-유량 관계곡선과 총유사량-유량 관계곡선을 제시하였다. 셋째, 단기하상 변동 분석에서는 산지하천이 도시하천보다 하상변동이 크게 발생하였으며, 장기하상 분석에서 도시하천은 현재 안정하상에 도달한 것으로 나타났다.

남강 중권역의 효율적인 유역관리를 위한 중점관리 대상지류 선정 (Selection of Priority Management Target Tributary for Effective Watershed Management in Nam-River Mid-watershed)

  • The major 24 tributaries in Nam-River mid-watershed were monitored for discharge and water quality in order to understand the characteristics of the watershed and to select the tributary catchment for improving water quality. According to the analytical results of discharge and water quality monitoring data of 24 tributaries, the mean value of discharge below $0.1m^3/s$ was 62.5% among the monitored tributaries and it mostly exceeded the water quality standards of Nam-river mid-watershed ($BOD_5$ = 3 mg/L, T-P = 0.1 mg/L over). According to the stream grouping method and the water quality delivery load density ($kg/day/km^2$) based on the results of tributary discharge and water quality monitoring, the tributary watersheds for improving the water quality were selected. In the Nam-River mid-watershed, tributaries in the GaJwaCheon, HaChonCheon catchment (Group D, $BOD_5$ = 3 mg/L over) and in the UirYeongCheon, SeokGyoCheon catchment (Group A, T-P = 0.1 mg/L over), which have a small flow (and/or large flow) and a high concentrations of water pollutants. The various water quality improving scheme for tributaries, in accordance with the reduction of potential point source pollution by living sewage and livestock wastewater, should be established and implemented.

충청남도 4대수계 주요 지류하천 수질 모니터링을 통한 유역 관리 방안 (Watershed Management Plan through Water Quality Monitoring for Main Branches of 4 Water Systems in Chungcheongnamdo)

  • This study aimed to develop a plan for effective performance of a watershed through correct identification of a river watershed by using the flowrate of the river and water quality data, which is the basis for the establishment of the water environment policy. The target river for water quality improvement was selected based on the monitoring result for 4 water systems in Chungcheongnamdo province in the recent 3 years. The result of analysis for the distribution of discharge capacity by a pollution source group for the water quality improvement target river showed that most of the target river has a high discharge capacity in the water system for living and livestock. Analysis for the density of the total discharge capacity of the whole watershed of Chungcheongnamdo indicated that the river that needs water quality improvement has high BOD concentration and high discharge load density at the point that this river is located. Thus, for efficient watershed management through selection and concentration, Chungcheongnamdo needs to improve the target river in priority. Stepwise planning is also required to establish and execute the water quality improvement in order to satisfy said target water quality, and establish the index for the water improvement rate for its evaluation.

낙동강 하구지역의 식물플랑크톤 극대역 변동에 관한 수직시뮬레이션 -II. 식물플랑크톤 극대역 변동의 수치시뮬레이션- (The numerical simulation on variation of phytoplankton maximum region in the estuary of Nakdong river -II. The numerical simulation on variation of phytoplankton maximum region-)

  • It is very important to interprete and simulate the variation of phytoplankton maximum region for the prediction and control of red tide. This study was composed of two parts first the hydrodynamic simulation such as residual current and salinity diffusion and second the ecological simulation such as phytoplankton distribution according to freshwater discharge and pollutant loads. Without the Nakdong river discharge residual current was stagnated in inner side of this estuary and surface distribution of salinity was over 25psu. On the contrary with summer mean discharge freshwater stretched very far outward and some waters flowed into Chinhae Bay through the Kadok channel and low salinity extended over coastal sea and salinity front occurred. From the result of contributed physical process to phytioplankton biomass the accumulation was occurred at the west part of this estuary and the Kadok channel with the Nakdong river discharge. When more increased input discharge the accumulation band was transported to outer side of this estuary. The frequently outbreak of red tide in this area is caused by accumulation of physical processes. The phytoplankton maximum region located inner side of this estuary without the Nakdong river discharge and with mean discharge of winter but it was moved to outer side when mean discharge of the Nakdong river was increased. The variation of input concentration from the land loads was not largely influenced on phytoplankton biomass and location of maximum region. When discharge was increased phytoplankton maximum region was transferred to inner side of the Kadok channel. ON the other hand when discharge was decreased phytoplankton maximum region was transferred to inner side of this estuary and chlorophyll a contents increased to over 20$\mu\textrm{g}$/L Therefore if any other conditions are favorable for growth of phytoplankton. decreas of discharge causes to increase of possibility of red tide outbreak.
