Channel topography, sediment properties, channel landscapes and characteristics of land covers in Naeseongcheon and Wicheon River consisting of granites and sedimentary rocks, respectively, are compared and analyzed. Due to the differences of bedrocks, soils and characteristics of land covers in the basins, Wicheon River with the slow flow speed shows the larger variations in river stage than Naeseongcheon River. While Naeseongcheon River fed by the granite sediments throughout granular disintegration hs tthe regular grain size properties with coarse sand in the most of river, Wicheon River fed by sedimentary rocks indicates the dramatic decertses of grain size lower-ward. Naeseongcheon River with channel interferences such as sand-sized sediment transughoations, dredges, and aggregate collections is analyzed as poorer vegetation covers than Wicheon River due to the dramatic changes in channel surfaces.

In this study, flood runoff characteristics is analyzed according to subbasin divisions by physically based rainfall-runoff model and appropriate number of subbasin divisions is suggested for midsize test basins. The Clark method, a lumped model in HEC-HMS, and the ModClark method, a semi-distributed model are used to simulate rainfall-runoff processes on Andong-reservoir basin, Imha-reservoir basin, and Pyeongchang river basin. The test basins were divided into nine subdivision cases by equal-area subdivision method such as single basin, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, and 15 subbasins, and compared the simulated and observed values in terms of the peak flow and the peak time. The simulation results indicated that the peak flows tended to increase and the peak time shifted earlier as the number of subdivisions increased and this tendency weakened after the certain number of subdivisions. In this research, the specific number of subdivision was defined as the minimum number of subdivision considering both peak flow and peak time. Consequently, the minimum number of subdivisions is determined as 5 for Andong and Imha reservoir basins and 7 for Pyeongchang river basin.
This study evaluates the applicability of the classification rule of hydrological soil group proposed by Lee et al. (2018) with its application to three river basins (Jungmuncheon, Cheonmicheon, and Hancheon) in Jeju Island. The CN values are estimated as results of this application to these three basins, which is then compared with those estimated by applying the conventional three methods. Additionally, previous studies related with the classification of soil groups of Jesu Island, such as the infiltration and rainfall-runoff analysis, are reviewed to evaluate how the resulting hydrological soil groups vary depending on the adopted classification method.. Summarizing the results is as follows. (1) Comparison result of the hydrological soil groups of Jeju Island with respect to the classification method shows that the soil group B is dominant in the application of Lee et al. (2018). However, it is hydrological soil groups C and D in the application of Hu and Jung (1987), hydrological soil groups A and C in the application of Jung et al. (1995), and hydrological soil group D in the application of RDA (2007). (2) In all the applications of Lee et al. (2018) to three selected river basins in Jeju Island, the CN valuse are found to be smaller than those by other conventional three methods.. Lastly, (3) The evaluation results of previous studies related with the classification of hydrological soil groups analysis in Jeju Island shows that the CN value in the Jeju Island may be smaller than those estimated by conventional three methods, also the initial loss higher than 0.2S.
Biological oxygen demand (BOD) as a stream water quality indicator was monitored monthly in the Mankyeong and Dongjin river basins from June 2001 to October 2002 to evaluate water qualitied as well as to get the information on the water quality management strategy in Semangeum reclamation areas. BOD in the Mankyeong river was 5.4mg/L in average during the survey and increased after the inflow of Iksan tributary, which was contaminated with livestock wastewater. BOD of Iksan tributary was maintained at 5.4 mg/L before joining the Wanggung tributary, however, that in the downstream was increased to 13.6 mg/L in average due to the inlet of the livestock wastewater. Meanwhile, BOD of Dongjin river was the average of 2.8 mg/L during the survey periods but it showed 3.5 mg/L when Jungeup tributary which was contaminated with sewage and industrial wastewater joined into the main stream. BOD in both Mankyeong and Dongjin rivers decreased in 2002 as compared to that in 2001.
The distributions of phytoplankton community are investigated from 29 reservoirs in Yeongsan and Seomjin River Basins, Korea. As a microalgal flora, a total of 424 species of phytoplankton were identified. They were 157 Chlorophyceae, 161 Bacillariophyceae, 39 Cyanophyceae, and 67 other algal taxa. The phytoplankton diversity were low in stream type reservoirs such as Kumho, Youngsan and Youngam Reservoirs. The population density of phytoplankton ranged from 29 cells $mL^{-1}$ to 53,161 cells $mL^{-1}$. The dominant phytoplankton species more than 20% of total standing crops were $Asterionella$$formosa$, $Aulacoseira$$ambigua$, $Aulacoseira$$distans$, $Aulacoseira$$granulata$, $Cyclotella$ sp., $Synedra$$acus$, $Coelastrum$$reticulatum$, $Pandorina$$morum$, $Scenedesmus$$arcuatus$, $Aphanothece$$clathrata$, $Microcystis$$aeruginosa$, $Phormidium$ sp. The concentration of chlorophyll $a$ ranged from 0.41 mg $m^{-3}$~220.72 mg $m^{-3}$, and showed highest concentration in Gaecho-je. The concentrations of TN and TP have no clear relationships with chlorophyll $a$ concentrations.
The water quality environment in Youngsan and Seumjin river basins was investigated based on the concept of the comprehensive Water Quality Index (WQI) and a spacial pollution source. Artificial factors influencing to river water quality have been analyzed. The specific delivery load of Youngsan river basin was found to be 8.34~97.25 kg/day/$\textrm{km}^2$, Gomagwon stream and Gwangju stream showed the relatively high rates as 97.25 kg/day/$\textrm{km}^2$ and 86.06 kg/day/$\textrm{km}^2$, respectively. The specific delivery load in Seumjin river basin was estimated to be 10.98∼19.51 kg/day/$\textrm{km}^2$, Suggesting no Significant Contribution of pollution. WQI of Youngsan watershed revealed 1.36~3.45, whereas Seumjin watershed showed a relatively low value of 0.5~1.47 And it is concluded that the specific delivery load suggested in this study provides the essential core data of the upper limit of pollutants receptor in the watershed area studied. From this study, it is suggested that the integrated environmental management of river basin requires the analysis of pollutants generation rate of the basin and the receptor capability for the self-purification.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the applicability of Single Linear Reservoir (SLR) model for runoff computations of small river basins in Korea. In the existing watershed flood routing methods the storage coefficient(K), which is the dominant parameter in the model, has been proposed to be computed in terms of the wqtershed characteristics. However, in the prsent study, the rainfall characteristics in addition to the watershed characteristics were taken into account in the multiple regression analysis for more accurate estimation of storage coefficient. The parameters finally adopted for the regressions were the drainge are, mean stream slope of the watershed, and the duration and total dffective amount of rainfalls. To verify the applicability of SLR model the computed results by SLR model with K determined by the regression equation were compared with the observed gydrographs, and also with those by other runoff computation methods; namely, the Clark method, nakayasu's synthetic unit hydrograph method and Nash model. The results showed that the present zSLR model gave the best results among these methods in the case of small river basins, but for the whatersheds with significant draingage area the Clark method gave the best results. However, it was speculated that the SLR model could also be accurately applied for flood compuatation in large wagersheds provided that the regression for storage coefficients were made with the actual data obtained in the large river basins.
The discharge within the basin in Jeju Island was calculated by using SWAT model, which a Semi-distributed rainfall-runoff model to the important rivers. The basin of Chunmi river of the eastern region of Jeju Island, as the result of correcting as utilizing direct runoff data of 2 surveys, appeared the similar value to the existing basin average runoff rate as 22% of average direct runoff rate for the applied period. The basin of Oaedo river of the northern region showed $R^2$ of 0.93, RMSE of 14.92 and ME of 0.70 as the result of correcting as utilizing runoff data in the occurrence of 7 rainfalls. The basin of Ongpo river of the western region showed $R^2$ of 0.86, RMSE of 0.62 and ME of 0.56 as the result of correcting as utilizing runoff data except for the period of flood in $2002{\sim}2003$. Yeonoae river of the southern region showed $R^2$ of 0.85, RMSE of 0.99 and ME of 0.83 as the result of correcting as utilizing runoff data of 2003. As the result of calculating runoff for the long term about 4 basins of Jeju Island from the above results, SWAT model wholly appears the excellent results about the long-term daily runoff simulation.
The change of environmental factors with flow rates were studied quantitatively for two rivers, the Nakdong River and the Sin stream, which have different basins in ecosystem structures, during short period after a heavy rain. In the Nakdong River, transparency, DO, alkalinity and hardness were negatively correlated with the flow rate by logarithmic function, but the concentration of SiO2 was relatively constant regardless of the flow chage. In the Sin stream, transparency, alkalinity, hardness and the concentration of NH3-N, NO2-N and SO4= showed negative correlation with the flow rate by logarithmic function. The ratios of maximum to minimum values for aquatic environmental factors during the samller than that for flow rate in the respective rivers (28 in the Nakdong R.; 50 in the Sin S.). Immediately after the heavy rain, the concentrations of NO2-N, NH3-N and PO4-P in the Sin stream were 8, 6 and 1 times as high as those in the Nakdong River, respectively, but in the stable flow state, those became 94, 25 and more than 10 times, respectively. The load for most of the dissolved environmental constituents changed similarly to the flow rate in both rivers. It is notable that, at the stable flow state, the loads for NH3-N (59g/sec) and NO2-N (3.3g/sec) in the Sin stream were 4.3 and 1.3 times as high as those in the Nakdong River.

This study was attempted to find best fitted distribution and the equations for probable maximum flow with the evaluation of parameters by the method of moment for the rat- ional design of hydraulic structures in the annual exceedance series. Six subwatersheds were selected as studying basins along Geum River basin. The results obtained through this study were analyzed and summarized as follows. 1. Fitted probability distribution was showed in the order of Three Parameter Lognorm al, Type 1 Extremal, Exponential, Pearson Type III, and Log Pearson Type I distribu- tion as the results of x$^2$ goodness of fit test. 2. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed in the order of Three Parameter Lognormal, Exp- onential' Pearson Type III, Log Pearson Type III and Type 1 Extremal distribution for the fitted probability distribution. 3. It can be concluded that Three parameter Lognormal distribution is a best fitted one among some other distributions out of respect for each both tests. An Exponential distribution was proposed as a suitable one by Chow, V.T. showeci lower fittness than that of Three Parameter Lognormal in Geum River basin. 5. Probable flood flow equations followins the return periods for each station were obt- ained by Three Parameter Lognormal distribution. 6. It is urgently essential that best fitted probability distribution should be established for the annual exceedance series in the main river systems of Korea.
