  • There is a great demand of micro-actuators for mobile information devices such as SFF optical drives and mobile phone cameras. However, the magnetic coils used in conventional electromagnetic motors are a major obstacle for the miniaturization because of their complicated structures and large power consumption. In this paper, a linear ultrasonic motor to actuate focusing lens of mobile devices is proposed. The new actuator uses a ring type bimorph piezoelectric material, and $d_{31}$ mode is adopted for applying linear motion. The interaction between inertia force and friction force makes linear motion by high-frequency saw signal input. The saw signal gives steady forces on the one direction by asymmetric inclination property of the signal itself on time domain. A commercial FEM(ANSYS) was used in this investigation for simulating structural analysis, identification of dynamic property, such as resultant displacement and coupled analysis with piezoelectric material. To evaluate the performance of the new design, a prototype was manufactured and experiments were carried out. Experimental results show the actuator motion of 5.4 mm/s at 10V saw signal of 41 kHz.

  • The plunger speed of solenoid actuator is affected by mass of plunger magnetic motive force. inductance, and return spring. These factors are not independent but related with each other according to design characteristics of solenoid actuator So, it is impossible to change the designed value for the purpose of increasing plunger speed. In this paper, we performed the FEM analysis for non-magnetic ring which is used for increasing attraction force and plunger speed by concentration of effective magnetic flux, and also performed simulation for dynamic characteristics of plunger. And, we proved the propriety of these by experiments.

  • This paper shows the development of a snake robot (KAEROT-snake V) which consists of 16 1-DOF actuator modules and head module. The modules are connected serially and the joint axis of each module is rotated by $90^{\circ}$ with respect to the previous joint so that the snake robot can move in the 3D space. A tail actuator module includes slip-ring and metal connector. KAEROT-snake IV developed in prior research could move in the 3D space and climb up in a narrow pipe. But its design was not appropriate to the unstructured tough environment and its speed was somewhat slow. A new actuator module is designed to enclose all parts of the module so that any wire is not exposed. The size and weight of the new module was slightly reduced. And the rotation speed and torque of the joint was increased by about twice when compared with pre-module. An embedded controller was developed so small that it can be mounted inside the module. The performance of the developed robot was demonstrated through various locomotion experiments.

  • There are many researches being in process to develop the information storage devices applying to the portable devices recently. Based on this need, the information storage devices have to be satisfied with the fast access time, the robustness of the system, high data transfer rate and lower media price. The total size of the drive must design to adapt the portable devices such as CF II card or PC II card size. This paper proposes the swing arm type actuator to insert the designed actuator in the drive of the CF II size. Hereafter the research will be going on to be suitable to the physical standard and design the focus magnetic circuit newly. The swing arm type actuator including this circuit is designed to have the dynamic characteristic satisfying the mechanical specification as well as the BD 1x. Finally, the adaptability to the portable devices was demonstrated by the finite element analysis and optimization of structural part.

  • In this paper, the geometry effectiveness and contact modes as functions of real contact length on a cap ring have been analyzed for high pressure sealing mechanism in reciprocating actuator. The reaction force and elastic strain energy density are very important parameters for analyzing the sealing performance of an ACGT ring seal. For the high pressure of 800bar and the maximum speed of 3m/s, the main piston is reciprocating along the linear line against the cylinder wall. The computed results indicate that the length ratio of a cap ring is more influential design parameter compared to that of the tribological contact mode. Thus, this paper recommends the discrete contact area rather than a conventional flat contact model. Especially, the sealing capacity is more improved when the length ratio of a cap ring is below 0.625.

  • In this paper, we improved the O-Ring Measurement System(O-R MS) based on oriental constitutional theory of four classes for objectify constitutional diagnosis by O-Ring test method which is one of effective methods in several constitutional diagnosis. The result of using in a half of year, some problems are pointed out. To settle these problems, we improved the actuator, display module, sensor module, and hardware of controller. Also, the software is supplemented to using the more decision parameters. It is estimated to have a high practical use for the objectified constitutional diagnosis.

  • Conventional smart foam is not applicable to active noise control in a duct having flow. Thus, this paper presents a ring-type smart foam as an alternative. The ring-type smart foam consists of polyurethane acoustic foam of lining shape and PVDF film embedded in the foam. The embedded PVDF element acts as an actuator to reduce noise at lower frequencies and the foam absorbs noise at higher frequencies. A feedforward adaptive filtered-x LMS controller is used to minimize the signal from the error microphone. Experiments are executed to reduce broadband and tonal noise.

  • It has been shown in the literature that active adjustment of the intake area of a jet engine has potential to improve its fuel efficiency. This paper presents the design and control of a novel proof-of-concept active jet engine intake using Nickel-Titanium (Ni-Ti or Nitinol) shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuators. The Nitinol SMA material is used in this research due to its advantages of high power-to-weight ratio and electrical resistive actuation. The Nitinol SMA material can be fabricated into a variety of shapes, such as strips, foils, rods and wires. In this paper, SMA wires are used due to its ability to generate a large strain: up to 6% for repeated operations. The proposed proof-of-concept engine intake employs overlapping leaves in a concentric configuration. Each leaf is mounted on a supporting bar than can rotate. The supporting bars are actuated by an SMA wire actuator in a ring configuration. Electrical resistive heating is used to actuate the SMA wire actuator and rotate the supporting bars. To enable feedback control, a laser range sensor is used to detect the movement of a leaf and therefore the radius of the intake area. Due to the hysteresis, an inherent nonlinear phenomenon associated with SMAs, a nonlinear robust controller is used to control the SMA actuators. The control design uses the sliding-mode approach and can compensate the nonlinearities associated with the SMA actuator. A proof-of-concept model is fabricated and its feedback control experiments show that the intake area can be precisely controlled using the SMA wire actuator and has the ability to reduce the area up to 25%. The experiments demonstrate the feasibility of engine intake area control using an SMA wire actuator under the proposed design.
