The antioxidant activities of methanol extracts of sixteen samples were tested using 1.1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl(DPPH) reactivity and TBARS substances assay in vitro. The methanol extracts of the rice brans from three wild rice -O. minuta, O. rufipogon, and O. barthii-were found to be the most effective in DPPH radical scavenging activity. The next effective ones were the rice brans of Heugjinjubyeo and leaves of Tapgolbori. When tested on lipid peroxidation using a lipid peroxidation generation system mediated by $H_2O$$_2$/Fe$^{2+}$ in rat liver homogenates, the brans and hull of wild rice (O. minuta, O. rufipogon, and O. barthii) and rice bran of Heugjinjubyeo exhibited protective activities against lipid peroxidation in the order of effectiveness.s.

A bulking agent is an essential material for composting of high-moisture livestock manure such as pig slurry. Sawdust has been used as the most popular bulking agent but resources are limited in Korea. In this study, the feasibility of rice hull as a bulking agent was examined for composting of solid pig manure. The solid pig manure was mixed with 15% sawdust (PM+SD15), 15% rice hull (PM+RH15), 10% sawdust and 5% rice hull (PM+SD10+RH5), and 5% sawdust and 10% rice hull (PM+SD5+RH10) based on fresh weight. These mixtures were composted for 35 days. The average temperature of the composting file for 35 days was higher in PM+SD10+RH5 and PM+SD5+RH10 than in PM+SD15 and PM+RH15. The mass loss of PM+SD10+RH5 and PM+SD5+RH10 were 36.7 and 36.4%, respectively, which were higher than that of PM+SD15 and PM+RH15. After composting, organic matter content and organic matter/nitrogen ratio in all treatments met the official standards of commercial fertilizers. We concluded that rice hull may be a good bulking agent for pig manure composting when it is used in mixture with sawdust.

The present study was conducted to provide basic data for environmentally friendly treatment of manure using vermicomposting. This was done by investigating the influence of physiochemical property change during the composting period on the survival of earthworms after mixing cow manure in different levels (0(CRH0), 10(CRH10), 20(CRH20), 30(CRH30), and 40%(CRH40)) with the rice hull that is generally added for composting manure. As composting proceeds, earthworms were able to survive in all conditions after 3 weeks. In terms of the C/N ratio by treatment groups, the rice hull mix treatments were significantly higher than the CRH0 treatment. Among rice hull mix treatments, the treatments with 30~40% rice hull level (CRH30 & CRH40) showed the highest ratio out of all composting periods (p<0.05). The C/N ratio in the 3rdweek when earthworms started surviving was 23.26~34.44. As composting progressed, pH and electrolytic conductivity (EC) were the highest in the CRH0 treatment (p<0.05) and tended to decrease with higher proportion of rice hull in the mix. It was found that pH and electrolytic conductivity (EC) that earthworms start to survive are 7.58~7.74 and 0.41~1.17 mS/cm, respectively. To summarize, when composing cow manure with various levels of rice hull mix, all physiochemical property changes turned out to allow the survival of earthworms, but the results suggest that efficient vermicomposting requires the tests to examine the growth and reproduction according to the rice hull mix ratio.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the growth and yield responses of hydroponically grown tomato as affected by the different substrates using perlite and mixtures with perlite. Substrates used in this experiment were perlite (fine and coarse granule), peatmoss, rice hull and carbonized rice hull. The results obtained were as follows ; The best results in terms of total fruit yield and average fruit weight obtained in the single treatment of perlite, followed by perlite mixture with rice hull and carbonized rice hull. Leaf area was also higher in the plots of perlite mixture and optimum mixing ratio of perlite, peatmoss and carbonized rice hull was determined as 5:3:2 by volume. The more the rice hull was added to the mixed substrates, the less in fruit production was observed. However, adding perlite to other substrates brought higher fruit yield. Single treatment of rice hull showed the lowest fruit yield but enhanced in soluble solids contents over 6.0 $^{\circ}$Brix at each cluster.
BACKGROUND: Among the biomass conversion techniques of livestock manure, composting process is a method of decomposing organic matter through microorganisms, and converting it into fertilizer in soil. The aerobic composting process is capable of treating cow manure in large quantities, and produces greenhouse gas as CO2 and N2O, although it has economical benefit. By using the activated rice hull biochar, which is a porous material, it was intended to mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions, and to produce the compost of which quality was high. Objective of this experiment was to estimate CO2 and N2O emissions through composting process of cow manure with different cooperated biochar contents. METHODS AND RESULTS: The treatments of activated rice hull biochar were set at 0%, 5%, 10% and 15%, respectively, during composting cow manure. The CO2 emission in the control was 534.7 L kg-1, but was 385.5 L kg-1 at 15% activated rice hull biochar. Reduction efficiency of CO2 emission was estimated to be 28%. N2O emission was 0.28 L kg-1 in the control, but was 0.03 L min-1 at 15% of activated rice hull biochar, estimating about 89% reduction efficiency. CONCLUSION: Greenhouse gas emissions during the composting process of cow manure can be reduced by mixing with 15% of activated rice hull biochar for eco-friendly compost production.
Salinity problems are caused from the accumulation of soluble salts in the root zone. These excess salts reduce plant growth and vigor by altering water uptake and causing ion-specific toxicities or imbalances. In this investigation, green pepper cultivation technique using mixture bed of soil and rice hull and surface drop fertigation system was examined to prolong the productivity of salt-affected plastic film house soils. Green pepper growth was better in the mixture bed of soil and rice hull comparing to the conventional soil cultivation. Especially root growth was much better and the root had more thin root system in the mixture bed of soil and rice hull. The better growth of root may be due to the better physical conditions and lower EC in the mixture bed of soil and rice hull where nutrient supply was well-managed with fertigation system. In the cultivation with mixture bed of soil and rice hull, fruit yield of green pepper was significantly higher; increased by 43% in comparison to the conventional soil cultivation. Pepper cultivation technique using mixture bed of soil and rice hull and surface drop fertigation system is expected to be a useful method for maintaining and prolonging the productivity of salt-affected plastic film house soils.

The effects of the high pressure and the high temperature digesting process with water on the properties of rice hull were investigated in this work. Two temperature condition such as $160^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$ and thee treatment time such as 15 min, 30 min and 45 min were applied for this treatment. The pH of extract after the digestion process decreased as the temperature and the treatment time of the digestion were increased. The ash content and lignin content were not decreased by the the digestion. The structure of rice hull after digestion treatment became more weak, the better efficiency of the fiberization with PFI-Mill was shown for the digestion treated rice hull with the higher temperature and the longer treatment time.
This study was conducted to evaluate the affect of soil conditioners and their application rates on the growth, Yield and quality of Flue-cured tobacco. Soil conditioners for this study were Montmorillonite arid Zeolite as clay mineral source and Rice hull and Sawdust as organic source. Their application rates were 500, 1000, 2000kg/10a. The growth of tobacco plants was promoted, compared with that of Non- treated plot (control) by Zeolite, Montmorillonite and Rice hull application but decreased by Sawdust application. During tobacco growing season soil moisture content, compared with control, was increased by Zeolite and Montmorillonite application but decreased by Rice hull and Sawdust application. In contrast to soil moisture content, soil temperature was higher in the Rice hull and Sawdust plot than in the plot of Zeolite and Montmorillonite. The treatment of Sawdust, compared with control, obviously accelerated the maturity of tobacco, increased reducing Sugar but decreased total alkaloids, nicotine and nitrogen content of cured leaves. The Sawdust Plot decreased the Yield (kg/10a) with significant difference by 1 %level but significantly increased leaf quality (Won/kg) and value (Won/10a) by 1%and 5 %level, respectively. The present application , ate of Nitrogen in Korea (12.5kg/10a) seems to be excessive for Flue-cured tobacco production.
In order to confirm the biological activities of rice bran and hull, total phenolic content, antioxidant and anticancer activities were examined in three rice varieties that have different seed coat colors such as brown, black, and purple. The antioxidant activity was measured by free radical scavenging assay including DPPH, $ABTS^+$ and reducing power activity. The anticancer activity was evaluated by WST assay with human HepG2 cell lines. As the result, Huegjinju, black seed coat rice, showed higher of the total phenolics contents in both bran and hull, than purple Jeojinju and brown Ilpum. In the antioxidant activity, Heugjinju showed the highest among the bran extracts, but the activities of hull extracts were similar in three varieties. In the anticancer activity to HepG2 cell line, the hull extract was 20% higher than that of bran extract in the average of three varieties. The hull extracts of Ilpum and Jeokjinju showed similar anticancer activites about 92%, and that of Heugjinju showed the lowest activity of 30.4%. The anticancer activities of hull extracts in three varieties showed positive correlation with total phenolics contents, DPPH radical scavenging activities and reducing power activities. In conclusion, the rice bran and hull showed potent antioxidant and anticancer activities varied in three varieties that have different seed coat colors.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of early diet dilution with 40% rice hull on growth performance, carcass characteristic and composition of meat-type ducks, and to reveal the possible mechanism for decreased body fat deposition. 160 1-day-old White Peking ducks with initial body weight of $44.5{\pm}1.0$ g were allotted to two treatments with 8 replicate pens per treatment and 10 ducks per pen (5 male and 5 female). Ducks were fed with the experimental starter diets diluted with 0% (control, RH0), 40% rice hull (RH40) during 8 to 14 d of age, respectively. Thereafter, all ducks were fed with grower diet. Ducks fed with RH40 diet from 8 to 14 d of age increased (p<0.05) feed intake, decreased (p<0.05) body weight, body weight gain and adjusted feed intake (excluded rice hull), abdominal fat, skin with fat, and fat content in carcass, and reduced (p<0.05) activities of hepatic malic dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and fatty acid synthetase. When diet dilution was withdrawn in the re-fed period from 15 to 42 d of age, full compensatory growth of body weight, breast meat and leg meat weight were attained. However, ducks were still less (p<0.05) carcass fat content and showed continually lower (p<0.05) hepatic lipogenic enzyme activities at the market age in RH40 ducks than the control. These results indicated that diluting diet with 40% rice hull during 8 to 14 d of age might be a suitable method to improve feed efficiency, and to reduce carcass fat deposition in the production of meat-type ducks.
