Hybrid propulsion systems provide many advantages in terms of stable operation and safety. However, classical hybrid rocket motors have lower fuel regression rate and combustion efficiency compared to solid propellant rocket motor. The recent research efforts are focused on the improvement of volume limitation and regression rate in the hybrid rocket engine. The present study has numerically investigated the combustion processes in the hybrid rocket engine. The turbulent combustion is represented by the eddy breakup model and Hiroyasu and Nagle and Strickland-Constable model are used for soot formation and soot oxidation. Radiative heat transfer is modeled by finite volume method. To reduce the uncertainties for convective heat transfer near solid fuel surface having strong blowing effect, the Low Reynolds number $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulent model is employed. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the turbulent combustion processes in the vortex hybrid rocket engine.

This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a flexibly mounted and rigid cylinder with two-degrees-of-freedom with respect to varying ratio of in-line natural frequency to cross-flow natural frequency, $f^*$, at a fixed low mass ratio. Combined in-line and cross-flow motion was observed in a sub-critical Reynolds number range. Three-dimensional displacement meter and tension meter were used to measure dynamic responses of the model. To validate the results and the experiment system, x and y response amplitudes and ratio of oscillation frequency to cross-flow natural frequency were compared with other experimental results. It has been found that the higher harmonics, such as third and more vibration components, can occur on a certain part of steel catenary riser under a condition of dual resonance mode. In the present work, however, due to the limitation of a size of circulating water channel, the whole test of a whole configuration of the riser at an adequate scale for VIV phenomenon was not able to be conducted. Instead, we have modeled a rigid cylinder and assumed that the cylinder is a part of steel catenary riser where the higher harmonic motions could occur. Through the experiment, we have found that even though the cylinder was assumed to be rigid, the occurrence of the higher harmonic motions was observed in a small reduced velocity ($V_r$) range, where the influence of the in-line response is relatively large. The transition of the vortex shedding mode from one to another was examined by using time history of x and y directional displacement over all experimental cases. We also observed the influence of in-line restoring force power spectral density with $f^*$.

Heat transfer coefficients in a dimpled channel, a ribbed channel, and a rip-dimple compound channel were measured by the transient liquid crystal technique. The channel aspect ratio, the rib height, the rip pitch, and the rib angle were 4:1, 6 mm, 60 mm and $60^{\circ}$, respectively. The dimple diameter and the center-to-center distance were 6mm and 7.2 mm, respectively, and the Reynolds number range was 30,000-50,000. Results showed that the heat transfer coefficients were increased by the angled rib. For the dimple-rib compound cooling cases, the heat transfer coefficients were further augmented and the thermal performance factor for the case was the highest.

This study is a preliminary research on characterization of methane - oxygen combustion used in bipropellant thruster. The limit of combustion stability and flame shape of methane - oxygen non-premixed flame injected by shear coaxial injector in the model combustion chamber Experimental studies have been carried out. A direct image of the flame was photographed using a DSLR camera, and combustion characteristics and flame length were quantified through image post-processing. As a result, it was confirmed that the stabilized flame was generated at the stoichiometric ratio as the oxidizer Reynolds number ($Re_o$) was increased, and the length of the turbulent flame was increased under the same injector diameter condition.

Wind loads on low-rise buildings in general and residential homes in particular can differ significantly depending upon the laboratory in which they were measured. The differences are due in large part to inadequate simulations of the low-frequency content of atmospheric velocity fluctuations in the laboratory and to the small scale of the models used for the measurements. The imperfect spatial coherence of the low frequency velocity fluctuations results in reductions of the overall wind effects with respect to the case of perfectly coherent flows. For large buildings those reductions are significant. However, for buildings with sufficiently small dimensions (e.g., residential homes) the reductions are relatively small. A technique is proposed for simulating the effect of low-frequency flow fluctuations on such buildings more effectively from the point of view of testing accuracy and repeatability than is currently the case. Experimental results are presented that validate the proposed technique. The technique eliminates a major cause of discrepancies among measurements conducted in different laboratories. In addition, the technique allows the use of considerably larger model scales than are possible in conventional testing. This makes it possible to model architectural details, and improves Reynolds number similarity. The technique is applicable to wind tunnels and large scale open jet facilities, and can help to standardize flow simulations for testing residential homes as well as significantly improving testing accuracy and repeatability. The work reported in this paper is a first step in developing the proposed technique. Additional tests are planned to further refine the technique and test the range of its applicability.

The characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop of several different porous materials which can be used as inserts inside solar volumetric air receivers were experimentally investigated. Generally, porous materials were inserted into solar volumetric air receivers to increase the thermal performance. In the present work, honeycomb (diameter: 100 mm, thickness: 30 mm), laminated mesh (diameter: 100 mm, thickness: 1 mm) are considered as the inserts for the experiment. The experimental apparatus consists mainly of a cylindrical ceramic duct as a receiver and an electric heater as an energy source. This system is an intake open loop, which used as air of working fluid. The temperatures inside the ceramic tube are measured by thermocouples, which are installed at each layer of the porous materials. The pressure-drop experimental apparatus is fabricated alike the above experimental equipment. An acrylic tube is used like as the ceramic tube, which has the same specifications of the ceramic tube. The pressure drop of porous materials inserted in the acrylic tube is measured between front and rear of those by transmitter. The results show that the laminated mesh surpasses the honeycomb of heat transfer and pressure drop increase as the porous material thickness and Reynolds number.
Photovoltaic thermal (PVT) collectors are devices that simultaneously produce electricity and heat. Research on conventional air-type PVT collector focuses on installing baffles to enhance the collector's thermal performance. However, the baffles have pressure drop inside the collector which degrades the thermal performance. Thus, it is necessary to design baffles to smoothen the flow inside the air-type PVT collector. Alternatively, installing perforated baffles in air-type PVT collectors can reduce the collector weight, but parameters such as the diameter of the perforated holes and the height of the perforated plates should be considered. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to analyze thermal characteristics of each variable of perforated baffles installed inside air-type PVT collector. For this purpose, the uniformity of air flow in the collector was compared through NX program, and the resultant heat gain and thermal efficiency of the air-type PVT collector were compared and analyzed. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to analyze thermal characteristics of each variable (Baffle angle, length, height, pitch, perforated ratio) of perforated baffles installed inside air-type PVT collector. For this purpose, the uniformity of air flow in the collector was compared through CFD program, and the resultant heat gain and thermal efficiency of the air-type PVT collector were compared and analyzed. As a result, the maximum outlet temperature was increased by 1.45 times and the heat gain was increased by 193.8 Wth, depending on the perforated baffle plate, compared to the collector without the baffle. The heat transfer performance showed that the maximum internal velocity was 1.61 times higher and the Reynolds number was 1.06 times higher depending on the parameters of the baffle plate.

Recently, the biochip which is a prime representation of NT, IT, BT, as an example of convergence technology, has been frequently mentioned. With the recent rapid advance in biotechnology, these compact devices, such as lab-on-a-chip or u-TAS, have been developed, and more research is needed. These compact devices typically use the micro-channel in order to shed or detach and mix a variety of materials. Specially, in micro-fluidic systems, a mixer is necessary to produce a mixture because only laminar flow occurs at a low-Reynolds number. To solve this problem, HVM a micromixer that induces a horizontal and vertical multi-mixing flow motion, is proposed. The mixing performance was analyzed and verified by optimizing the shape through the CFD analysis and evaluating the structural analysis and the soundness with material properties that are obtained through the basic experiment.
For the purpose of the optimal design of a frame and plate type of pervaporation module, model equations which can predict the effects of feed flow condition on the temperature distribution of the feed developed in the module were established and the temperature distribution with feed flow condition was investigated through the model si$$\mu$ation. With increasing the Reynolds number of feed flow in the module, the flow velocity gradient in the channel height-direction as well as the volume rate of feed which acts as energy source for the evaporation of perrneants on the permeate-side surface of a membrane increased to such an extent that both mass and heat flux in the channel height direction could increase and the temperature drop of feed due to the evaporation of the permeant could be reduced correspondingly. A decrease in channel height caused the temperature drop of feed because of decreasing feed flow in the module. It was observed that the si$$\mu$ation result on the effect of Re on the temperature distribution of feed in the module has an agreement with experiment.

Design and performance analysis of propeller for solar-powered HALE UAV, EAV-3 are conducted. Experiment points of design variables are obtained by using Design of Experiment(DOE) and Kriging meta-model is generated for objective and constraints function. The geometry of propeller is designed by evaluating the response surface with requirement and restrictions. The validity of the design is verified by meta-model based optimization. Computational analyses are carried out by using commercial CFD code and the results are compared with those from a design code and wind tunnel test. The results showed good agreement with predictions of the design code at the design altitude. Also, it is confirmed that the blockage effect due to the measurement device and support strut is included in the test data and the results including this effect compare well with the test data.
