A mathematical model was developed to simulate the performance of a prototype wind-powered reverse osmosis desalination system. The model consists of two sub-models operated in a series. The first sub-model is the wind-energy conversion sub-model, which has wind energy and feed water as its input and pressurized feed water as its output. The second sub-model is a reverse osmosis (RO) process sub-model, with pressurized feed water as its input and the flow and salinity of the product water or permeate as its output. Model coefficients were determined based on field experiments of a prototype wind powered RO desalination system of the University of Hawaii, from June to December 2001. The mathematical model developed by this study predicts the performance of wind-powered RO desalination systems under different design conditions. The system optimization is achieved using a linear programming approach. Based on the results of system optimization, a design guide is prepared, which can be used by both manufacturer and end-user of the wind-driven reverse osmosis system.
The membrane processes that are commonly uscd in water and wastewater treatment are reverse osmosis (Ro), ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF), which utilize pressure differentials. There is also nano-filtration (NF), or low-pressure reverse osmosis, which is positioned midway between conventional reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration. Reverse osmosis membranes reject dissolved ions, while ultrafiltration can be used to reject relatively larger molecules, such as protein, polysacchalides and so on. Microfiltration is capable of eliminating particles at submicron level. This paper summarizes the characteristics of MSAS process first, as it is the main membrane process applied to wastewater treatment. Two successful examples of the applications, the cases of individual building reuse system and nightsoil treatment, are then shown. The latest trend of new membrane applications, i.e., immersed-type MSAS is also introduced.
Organic matters that comprise a tiny part of seawater generally occur over 50% of membrane fouling in Reverse Osmosis Process. This study evaluates Foundation efficiency of reverse osmosis membranes under brackish and seawater conditions and resistance of organic fouling. Moreover, analyzing the membrane surface through roughness, contact angle and zeta potential results in roughness and contact angle are proportional to flux decline rate (FDR), yet FDR has high value when zeta potential is low level. Furthermore, with various membrane fouling of different raw water conditions, the flux tends to improve when pH value is high and raw water which is complex with organic and cation pollutes membrane faster than organic separated raw water condition.
This study was focused on experiment for the separation and concentration process of Cu(II), Zn(II) solution with the variation of applied pressure and concentration using reverse osmosis plate and frame modules. Rejection coefficient and degree of concentration for Cu(II) component using single and multi-stage reverse osmosis process were showed 96.3~97.8%, 0.044~0.191(in single-stage), 96.3~98.4%, 0.400~2.264(in multi-stage) within the range of experimental condition, respectively. Those of Zn(II) were 93.3~97.1%, 0.019~0.395(in single-stage), 96.3~98.2%, 0.365~1.454(in multi-stage), respectively. Degree of concentration of multi-stage were higher than those of single-stage. Heavy metal[Cu(II), Zn(II)] separation was very efficient in using reverse osmosis plate and frame type modules. Separation efficiency for a mixed solution Cu(II) and Zn(II) was higher than those of each one of Cu(II) and Zn(II).
Many reports have warned of insufficient water supply in most countries in future and prospected providing safe and clean water become more difficult by lack of access to sustainable drinking water resources. Several facts and figures explained the impact by natural climate change and human activity results in the water scarcity and deterioration. Among many scientific solutions, the seawater desalination using a reverse osmosis membrane, so called SWRO (Seawater Reverse Osmosis) process, has been recognized as one of the most promising alternatives because of its stability and efficiency in producing large amount of drinking water from seawater through desalination by membrane filtration. Recently, in Korea, numerous researches are conducted to develop more productive and cost effective SWRO process for its wide implementation. The objective of this paper is to review the patents concerning SWRO technologies involving the plant engineering, maintenance including pretreatment of seawater and fouling control, module design, and mechanical units development for energy saving. The patents in Korea, U.S., Japan, Europe, and PCT were intensively researched and analyzed to provide the state of the art as well as leading edge technology on SWRO. This information can hopefully suggest meaningful guidelines on future research and development.

Simulations were conducted to predict supersaturation along Reverse Osmosis (RO) modules for seawater desalination. The modeling approach is based on the use of conservation principles and chemical equilibria equations along RO modules. Full Pitzer ion interactive forces model for concentrated solutions was implement to calculate activity coefficients. An average rejection rate for all ionic species was considered. Supersaturation has been used to assess scaling. Supersaturations with respect to all calcium carbonate forms and calcium sulfate were calculated up to 50% recovery rate in seawater RO desalination. The results for four different seawater qualities are shown. The predictions were in a good agreement with the experimental results.
