  • Although many studies have been performed for the structural details of orthotropic steel deck, most of them were focused on the trough rib of standard type, but not for orthotropic steel deck with longitudinal rib of open section used at beginning of the deck. In order to investigate the cause of fatigue crack for orthotropic steel deck bridge serviced 31 years with longitudinal rib of open section, in this study, the behavior characteristics of target structural details were analyzed based on measurement data under real traffic condition. Also the typical loading truck passing the target bridges was estimated with the structural analysis detailed, and the stresses and deformation patterns of target structural details were analyzed by performing the detailed structural analysis. Based upon the analysis, retrofitting methods of the fatigue crack were suggested and its validation was examined. From this study, it was clarified that fatigue crack of longitudinal rib with open section were affected with the stress increment by shear deformation in the rib and the occurrence of alternative stress due to moving vehicle. In addition, it was known that it is important to perform fatigue design reflected the local behavior of the structural details.

  • As increasing number of large-size earthquake around Korean peninsula, many interests have been focused to the earthquake strengthening of existing structures. The brittle fracture of Non-seismic designed columns lead to full collapse of the building. In the past, cross-sectional extension method, a steel plate reinforcing method and fiver-reinforced method are applied to Seismic Rehabilitation Technique mainly. However, the reinforcement methods have drawbacks that induce physical damage to structures, large space, long duration time. So, in this study, performance evaluation of previously developed FRP seismic reinforcement which do not induce physical damage and short duration time was enforced. The specimens were constructed with 80% downscale. FRP seismic reinforcement are manufactured of glass fiber or aluminum plate with holes and glass fiber. From the experiment results, seismic performance of specimens which reinforced with FRP seismic reinforcement were increased.

  • Over the past several years, sea trade have increased traffic by ships which highlighted a problem of unwanted species invading the surrounding seas through ship's ballast water discharge. Maritime trade volume has continuously increased worldwide and the problem still exists. The respective countries are spending billions of dollars in an effort to clean up the contamination and prevent pollution. As part of an effort to solve marine environmental problem, BWM(Ballast Water Management) convention was adopted at a diplomatic conference on Feb. 13 2004. In order to comply harmoniously this convention by each country. This convention will be effective after 12 months from the date which 30 countries ratified accounting for more than 35% of the world merchant shipping volume. On Sep. 8 2016, Finland ratified this convention and effective condition was satisfied as 52 states and world merchant vessel fleet 35.1441%. Thus, after Sep. 8 2017, all existing vessels shall be equipped with BWTS(Ballast Water Treatment System) in accordance with D-2 Regulation, which physically handles ballast water from ballast water exchange system(D-1 Regulation). In this study, we analyzed in detail the optimal design method using the Risk Analysis and Evaluation technique which is mainly used in the manufacturing factory or the risky work site comparing with the traditional design concept method applying various criteria. The Risk Assessment Method is a series of processes for finding the Risk Factors in the design process, analyzing a probility of the accident and size of the accident and then quantifying the Risk Incidence and finally taking measures. In this study, this method was carried out for Electrolysis treatment type on DWT 180K Bulk Carrier using "HAZOP Study" method among various methods. In the Electrolysis type, 63 hazardous elements were identified.

  • This study suggested shear strength prediction model for retrofitted single-layered RC squat wall by providing column element as additional boundary element. This model revised existing shear strength prediction model of shear wall to consider detail and shear deformation capacity of column by assuming the length that concentrated shear deformation of the column is occurred. It was able to suggest additional compatibility condition related to shear strain of retrofitted of retrofitted shear wall at the ultimate state by using this length. Therefore, this study proposed a flow chart for predicting shear strength of the retrofitted shear wall considering this additional condition. Moreover, this study also proposed a method for predicting initial stiffness of the retrofitted shear wall by transforming the wall's resisting mechanism against to lateral load to a single diagonal strut mechanism. The proposed methods can predict shear strength and initial stiffness of not only the retrofitted shear wall of this study, also infilled RC shear wall in RC frame.

  • Nowadays, there are a great number of various structures that have been retrofitted by using different FRP Composites. Due to this, more researches need to be conducted to know more the characteristics of these structures, not only that but also a comparison among them before and after the retrofitting is needed. In this research, a model steel structure is tested using a bench-scale earthquake simulator on the shake table, using recorded micro tremor data, in order to get the dynamic behaviors. Beams of the model steel structure are then retrofitted by using CFRP composite, and then tested on the Quanser shake table by using the recorded micro tremor data. At this stage, it is needed to evaluate the dynamic behaviors of the retrofitted model steel structure. Various types of methods of OMA, such as EFDD, SSI, etc. are used to take action in the ambient responses. Having a purpose to learn more about the effects of FRP composite, experimental model analysis of both types (retrofitted and no-retrofitted models) is conducted to evaluate their dynamic behaviors. There is a provision of ambient excitation to the shake table by using recorded micro tremor ambient vibration data on ground level. Furthermore, the Enhanced Frequency Domain decomposition is used through output-only modal identification. At the end of this study, moderate correlation is obtained between mode shapes, periods and damping ratios. The aim of this research is to show and determine the effects of CFRP Composite implementation on structural responses of the model steel structure, in terms of changing its dynamical behaviors. The frequencies for model steel structure and the retrofitted model steel structure are shown to be 34.43% in average difference. Finally, it is shown that, in order to evaluate the period and rigidity of retrofitted structures, OMA might be used.

  • Traditional external post-tensioning method using either steel bars or tendons is commonly used as a retrofitting method for concrete bridges. However, the external post-tensioning method has some disadvantages such as stress concentration at anchorages and inefficient load carrying capability regarding live loads. Thermal prestressing method is a newly proposed method for strengthening and rehabilitation of concrete girder bridges. Founded on a simple concept of thermal expansion and contraction of steel, the method is a hybrid method of external post-tensioning and steel plate bonding, combining the merits of two methods. In this paper, basic concepts of the method are presented and an illustrative experiment is introduced. From actual experimental data, the thermal prestressing effect is substantiated and the FEM approach for its analysis is verified.

  • The existing concrete beams can be retrofitted or reinforced by attaching carbon fiber or glass fiber sheet beneath the beams. Although diverse design methods and application techniques of the retrofitting are studied and developed, the testing method of examining retrofitted beams have not been put into practice yet. In this study, a bond delamination has been modeled and studied to provide a basis for the development of actual testing equipments. For this purpose, Gaussian and sinusoidal waves with 3GHz and 5GHz center frequency are used as an incident wave and 1mm and 3mm bond delamination under the reinforcement are modeled. In the modeling, Finite Difference-Time Domain algorithm is used to investigate the behavior of electromagnetic waves in concrete. The results have shown that 5GHz waves are suitable for the detection of delamination.

  • The renewal of existing buildings rather than new construction has increased due to it's cost effective characteristics. Remodeling is also an environmentally-friendly approach that reduces the amount of waste in construction site. Remodeling can sometimes include partial destruction of the structural members of a building. In addition it is important that the buildings under going remodeling retrofitted to make themselves stable and meet up with the future demands for better structural performance. The objective of this paper is to present the test results and structural behavior of RC walls that are perforated and to introduce effective retrofitting methods by evaluating efficacy of passive retrofit and active retrofit. Passive retrofit and Active retrofit using carbon fiber sheets, steel plates and wire that are widely used for strengthening the main members of existing buildings. The test results showed that the failed specimens had shear fractures and that two different types of retrofit method had different effects on the strengths of each specimen.

  • The International Maritime Organization has recently strengthened its marine environment regulations. The energy efficiency index has long been an important indicator of ship design, and now, energy efficiency is being enforced for existing ships as well as new ships. To increase the energy efficiency of existing ships, methods such as retrofitting the bow bulb, selecting an optimized trim during ship operation, and installing an energy saving device have been applied. In this study, the ship resistance was numerically simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) under various bow and stern trim conditions. In addition, the bulb was redesigned to further improve the resistance performance under the selected trim conditions. When the improved bulb was applied, the effective horse power increased by approximately 5%. It is, however, necessary to verify whether the redesigned bulb can reduce ship resistance in waves.
