  • This study proposes a experimental method to evaluate bonding strength of FRPs used for retrofitting concrete structures. Specimens are designed so that debonding failure of FRPs can be induced from reinforced concrete beams retrofitted with two layers of carbon and glass FRPs. And three-point loading tests are performed to see if debonding failure with proper debonding strength is observed from the specimens. The test results show that the tested beams are failed due to debonding of FRPs, therefore, the proposed test method is capable of evaluating debonding strength of FRPs using relatively small normal strength concrete beams.

  • Torsional behavior due to the plane irregularities of the piloti building can cause excessive story drift in the torsionally outermost column, which can lead to shear failure of the column. As a seismic retrofit method that can control the torsional behavior of the piloti building, the expansion of RC wall, steel frame or steel brace may be used, but such methods may hinder the openness of the piloti floor. Therefore, in this study, linear dynamic analysis and nonlinear static analysis for piloti buildings retrofitted by knee brace were performed, and seismic performance evaluation and torsion control effect of knee brace were analyzed. The results showed that the shear force of the column increased when the piloti building retrofitted by knee brace, but it was effective in controlling the torsional deformation. In case of retrofit between knee brace and column by 30°, the shear force of the column increased less than that of 60°, and the lateral displacement of column was decreased in the order of □, ◯ and H in cross-section.

  • This paper deals with steel braced frame as increasing the lateral strength and ductility in order to seismic retrofit of existing buildings and discusses the designing criteria and calculation method of retrofitted buildings. The addition of steel braced frame can be effective for increasing the lateral strength and ductility of existing buildings. However, There is a problem in utilizing this method. It is the approach to provide an adequate connection between the existing RC frame and the installed steel braced frame, because global strength by failure mode(three type) depends on detail of connection and strength of existing RC frame. So, the designer must be confirmed if it satisfies the required performance or not. Failure mode of type I is the most appropriate for increasing the lateral strength and ductility. Seismic performance evaluation and strength calculation of seismic retrofit are performed by guideline by KISTEC(Korea Infrastructure Safety & Technology)'s "seismic performance evaluation and rehabilitation of existing buildings" and Japan Building Disaster Prevention Association. Buildings are modeled and non-linear pushover analysis are performed using MIDAS program.

  • In this study, shaking table test was carried out to evaluate the seismic behavior and performance of low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) piloti structures with and without retrofit. The specimens were designed considering the characteristics of existing building with pilotis such as natural period, distribution factor of strength and stiffness between columns and core wall on the first soft story. The test for the non-retrofit specimen showed that damage was concentrated on the stiffer member on the same floor as the core wall failed by shear fracture whereas columns experienced slight flexural cracks. Considering the failure mode of the non-retrofit specimen, the retrofit method using steel rod damper was presented for improving the seismic performance of piloti structures. The results of the test for retrofit specimen revealed that the retrofit method was effective for controlling the damage as the main RC structural members were not destroyed and most of input energy was dissipated by hysteretic behavior of the damper.

  • In this study, a cyclic loading test was carried out for a reinforced concrete frame installed a TS(tension-spring) damper for the purpose of verifying the seismic strengthening effect of the TS seismic reinforcing method. The test specimens are four specimens of non - reinforced frame and three reinforced frame specimens. Experimental parameters are Shape of damper and construction method of damper. As a result, the construction method of inserting type inside window was twice as much in terms of strength and stiffness, and the method of externally attached type showed a performance improvement of about 2 times in terms of energy dissipation. From these results, it can be confirmed that the TS seismic reinforcing method is a superior method for field application and seismic strengthening.

  • Recently the slab span-jointing method has been employed as one of the retrofit technologies to enhance the capacity of existing simple beam bridges in many cases. In general this method makes simple beam bridges behave like multi-span continuous bridges under service loads excluding self weight in company with external prestress force method in the field. In this paper the continuation effect has been studied for the retrofitted bridges by the experimental and numerical approaches. The results show that the deflections and stresses of members are reduced due to the increase of the total stiffness of bridge system and the efficiency of bridge continuation based on the slab span-jointing method is about 40 % when comparing with the case of continuous bridges.

  • In the current research, the scheme of displacement-based seismic design for seismic retrofit of concrete structures using FRP composite materials has been proposed. An algorithm of the nonlinear flexural analysis of FRP composite concrete members has been presented under multiaxial constitutive laws of concrete and composite materials. An algorithm for performance-based seismic retrofit design of reinforced concrete columns with FRP jacket has been newly introduced to modify the displacement coefficient method used in reinforced concrete structures. From applications of retrofit design, the method are easy to apply in the practice of retrofit design and give practical prediction of nonlinear seismic performance evaluation of retrofitted structures.

  • This paper proposes a novel topology optimization method generating multiple materials for external linear plane crack structures based on the combination of IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA) and eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM). A so-called eXtended IsoGeometric Analysis (X-IGA) is derived for a mechanical description of a strong discontinuity state's continuous boundaries through the inherited special properties of X-FEM. In X-IGA, control points and patches play the same role with nodes and sub-domains in the finite element method. While being similar to X-FEM, enrichment functions are added to finite element approximation without any mesh generation. The geometry of structures based on basic functions of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) provides accurate and reliable results. Moreover, the basis function to define the geometry becomes a systematic p-refinement to control the field approximation order without altering the geometry or its parameterization. The accuracy of analytical solutions of X-IGA for the crack problem, which is superior to a conventional X-FEM, guarantees the reliability of the optimal multi-material retrofitting against external cracks through using topology optimization. Topology optimization is applied to the minimal compliance design of two-dimensional plane linear cracked structures retrofitted by multiple distinct materials to prevent the propagation of the present crack pattern. The alternating active-phase algorithm with optimality criteria-based algorithms is employed to update design variables of element densities. Numerical results under different lengths, positions, and angles of given cracks verify the proposed method's efficiency and feasibility in using X-IGA compared to a conventional X-FEM.

  • The safety of station structures among railway infrastructures should be considered as a top priority because hundreds of thousands passengers a day take a subway. The station structures, which have been being operated since the 1970s, are especially vulnerable to the earthquake and long-term vibrations such as ambient train vibrations as well. This is why the structural-health monitoring system of station structures should be required. For these reason, Korean government has made an effort to develop the structural health-monitoring system of them, which can evaluate the health-state of station structures as well as can monitor the vulnerable structural members in real-time. Then, through the monitoring system, the vulnerable structural members could be retrofitted. For the development of health-state evaluation method for station structures with the real-time sensing data measured in the fields, authors carried out the numerical simulations to develop evaluation algorithms based on statistical pattern recognition techniques. In this study, the dynamic behavior of Chungmuro station in Seoul was numerically analyzed and then critical members were chosen. Damages were artificially simulated at the selected critical members of the numerical model. And, the supervised and unsupervised learning based pattern recognition algorithms were applied to quantify and localize the structural defects.
