  • In order to analyze shell structures more accurately and effectively, a hybrid 4-node quadrilateral shell element is formulated. The element includes the frilling degrees of freedom and the independent parameter terms of the stress resultants are appropriately selected to overcome some of the shortcomings of the standard 4-node quadrilateral elements. In order to show the accuracy and convergent characteristics of the proposed shell element, three numerical examples are analyzed and the results are compared with the existed. As a result of this study, following conclusions are obtained. (1)Analysis results by the proposed element are less sensitive to the element geometric distortion. (2)The proposed element does not produce any spurious zero-energy modes

  • This paper proposes some further improvements on N.K. Bose's 2D stability test for polynomials with real coefficients by revealing symmetric properties of the polynomials, resultants occurring in the test and by generalizing Sturm's method. The improved test can be fulfilled by a totally algebraic algorithm with a finite number of steps and the computational complexity is largely reduced as it involves only certain real variable polynomials with degrees not exceeding half of their previous complex variable counterparts. Nontrivial examples for 2D polynomials having both numerical and literal coefficients are also shown to illustrate the computational advantage of the proposed method.

  • The differential equations governing free, out of plane vibrations of horizontally curved beams are derived and solved numerically to obtain the natural frequencies and the mode shapes. The Runge-Kutta method and Regula-Falsi method are used to integrate the differential equations and to determine the natural frequencies, respectively. In nu- merical examples, the hinged-clamped end constraint is considered and four lowest frequency parameters are reported as functions of four non-dimensional system parameters: (1) opening angle, (2) slenderness ratio, (3) shear parameter and (4) stiffness parameter. Also, typical mode shapes of displacements and stress resultants are shown.

  • This paper concerns the development and implementation of an orthotropic, stress resultant elasto-plastic finite element model for the collapse load analysis of reinforced concrete plates. The model implements yield line plasticity theory for reinforced concrete. The behaviour of the yield functions are studied, and modifications introduced to ensure a robust finite element model of cases involving bending and twisting stress resultants ($M_x$, $M_y$, $M_{xy}$). Onset of plasticity is always governed by the general yield-line-model (YLM), but in some cases a switch to the stress resultant form of the von Mises function is used to ensure the proper evolution of plastic strains. Case studies are presented, involving isotropic and orthotropic plates, to assess the behaviour of the yield line approach. The YLM function is shown to perform extremely well, in predicting both the collapse loads and failure mechanisms.

  • This paper focuses on the investigation of three-dimensional (3D) warping effect on the stiffness constants of composite beams with closed section profiles. A finite element (FE) cross-sectional analysis is developed based on the Reissner's multifield variational principle. The 3D in-plane and out-of-plane warping displacements, and sectional stresses are approximated as linear functions of generalized sectional stress resultants at the global level and as FE shape functions at the local sectional level. The classical elastic couplings are taken into account which include transverse shear and Poisson deformation effects. A generalized Timoshenko level $6{\times}6$ stiffness matrix is computed for closed section composite beams with and without warping. The effect of neglecting the 3D warping on stiffness constants is shown to be significant indicating large errors as high as 93.3%.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration analysis of beam-columns on elastic foundation using Differential Quadrature Method. Based on the dynamic equilibrium equation of a beam element acting the stress resultants and the inertia force, the governing differential equation is derived for the in-plane free vibration of such beam-columns. For calculating the natural frequencies, this equation is solved by the Differential Quadrature Method. It is expected that the results obtained herein can be used in application of Differential Quadrature Method to the field of civil engineering and practically in the structural engineering, the foundation engineering and the vibration control fields.

  • The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs(MLTM) constructed the IMO Korea homepage to owned jointly IMO information when establishing a international standard in about marine transport and the shipbuilding, in order to speak for the profit of Korea in IMO and it was double renewal since 2004. But the newly re-opened the IMO Korea homepage is also operated to the level which simply keeps IMO documents because of limited H/W sizes. This study investigated and analyzed the domestic and similar foreign homepages to provide effectively about the IMO informations At the result, these homepages were serviced to the meeting resultants using the various contents such as Semantic search, Thesaurus search, establishment of web accessible etc. Therefore, the existing IMO Korea homepage must be re-constructed as IMO Information Portal Site to provide better information.

  • The SS-phpm 4HCl(N,N'-bis-[2(S)-pyrrolidinylmethyl]phenylene-l,2-diamine-4-Hydrochloride) ligand having stereospecificity has been prepared and reacted with trans-[$Co(pyridine)_4Cl_2]$Cl. The resultants are purple crystals, which are identified to be ${\Delta}$-cis-${\beta}$-[$Co(SS-phpm)Cl_2$]Cl by elemental analysis and UV/Vis- and CD-absorption spectra, The conformation of SS-phpm in ${\Delta}$-cis-${\beta}$ complex is ${\delta}$ ${\varepsilon}$ ${\lambda}$ (SSSS) for each of the five-membered chelated ring. Futhermore, according to orientation of secondary amine, total strain energy on each isomers was calculated by molecular mechanics(MM) to verify structural characterization and spectral data. As the result, the most stabilized isomer was ${\Delta}$-cis-${\beta}$(SSSS). The value of total strain energy(U) of ${\Delta}$-cis-${\beta}$(SSSS) isomer was 63.21 kcal/mol, respectively.

  • This paper deals with free vibrations of the tapered Timoshenko beam with constant volume, in which both the rotatory inertia and shear deformation are included. The cross section of the tapered beam is chosen as the regular polygon cross section whose depth is varied with the parabolic function. The ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of such beam are derived based on the Timoshenko beam theory by decomposing the displacements. Governing equations are solved for determining the natural frequencies corresponding with their mode shapes. In the numerical examples, three end constraints of the hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped ends are considered. The effects of various beam parameters on natural frequencies are extensively discussed. The mode shapes of both the deflections and stress resultants are presented, in which the composing rates due to bending rotation and shear deformation are determined.
