  • To investigate the variation of the mandibular rest position according to time, the mandibular rest position was induced by combination of relaxation and swallowing method. The displacement of the incisal point was recorded with the pinpointed miniature lamp luminograph in three dimensions immediately, 30 seconds, and 60 seconds after induction of the mandibular rest position. The Results obtained were as follows 1. Intermaxillary vertical distance measured immediately after induction of mandibur rest position ranged from 1.0mm to 3.9mm And it varied irregularly with time, ranging from 0.1mm to 1.1mm Anteroposterior variance with time ranged irregularly from 0.2mm to 0.8mm 2. The mandibular rest position observed in the frontal plane varied with time to right or left direction, ranging from 0.2mm to 0.5mm from the centric occlusion 3. the mandibular rest position wos not placed definite position but varied spatially in certain range with time.

  • The author compared and analysed the roentgenocephalograms of one hundred Korean adults with the normal occlusion (50 males and 50 females), which were taken on the centric occlusion and the rest position of the mandible respectively for every subject, and then researched the relations among the relaxed muscle of the mandible, lightly touched of the lips, and the position just after the swallowing of saliva, of which 38 among 50 males had the rest position of the mandible. The results are as followings: 1. The anterior facial height increases more at the rest position of the mandible than at the centric occlusion, while the posterior facial height decreases. 2. The mandible moves more backward and downward at the rest position of the mandible than at the centric occlusion. 3. The facial procumbency and the incisor tooth inclination increases more at the rest position of the mandible than the centric occlusion in terms of the facial plane. 4. There are no differences between males and females at the rest position of the mandible and the centric occlusion in the meaning of variation. 5. There are no differences among the three methods from the view of lines and angles of the roentgenocephalogram.

  • The purpose of the this article was to determine the ideal Korean phonemes for the mandibular rest position. The subjects were 30 dentists and dental students who had normal occlusion and speech patterns. To determine the amount of mandibular opening, MKG was used for this study. The results were as follows: 1. The average mandibular rest position of Korean were -0.75(0.55)mm in horizontal plot (X), and -1.21(0.54) mm in vertical plot (Y). 2. The ideal medial sounds for the mandibular rest position were '으', '우' and '이'. 3. The ideal Korean consonants for the mandibular rest position were affricatives (ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅉ) and fricatives (ㅅ, ㅆ), vowels were back closed vowels (ㅡ, ㅜ). 4. The last consonants were affected by the proceeding vowels. 5. In Korean, the vowels were the most important factors that determine the rest position of mandible.

  • In this paper, the proprioceptive sensitivity was compared by Foot-Hand task method and the effect of the proprioceptive sensitivity and auditory to the standing position between blind and normal children was measured using BPM for 56 children in 7, 8, 9 and 10 years old. There are three measurement methods are used for BPM : Rest, Forward Looking, 'Sound' position. The following conclusions were obtained from the above measurements. 1. In comparison of proprioceptive sensitivity between blind and normal children, there is no significant difference(p > .05). There is no significant difference in comparison of each age group and also there is no difference in each gender group(p > .05). 2. In comparison of standing position measurement between blind and normal children, there is any difference (p > .05) in three measurement(Rest, Forward Looking, 'Sound' position) but there is no significant difference in each gender difference(p > .05). There is any difference between Rest and 'Sound' position of blind children, also there is any difference between Forward Looking and ' Sound ' position, rest and 'Sound' position of normal children(p > .05). 3. There is no significant difference of correlation between proprioceptive sensitivity test and standing position measurement in Pearson correlation coefficient(p > .05).

  • The tests on the oral capacties which are divided into five groups on centric occlusion position, physiologic rest position, two mm open bite position, four mm open bite position, and maximum opening position of the mandible were conducted on the one hundread normal dental college students and staffs. The aims were to study the changeability of the fundamental oral structure, to get some helpful informations for the full denture wearers and related physiology, and also to find out further experimental standards. The results were as follows; 1. There was also some volumetric space in centric occlusion position. 2. The greater the voluntary opening degree of the mandible was, the greater the oral volumetric capacity was. 3. There were no correlations between the oral capacity and height, weight, and cheek thickness. 4. There were no correlations between the centric occlusion position and physiologic rest position, and voluntary positions of the mandible. 5. The inserted material into the oral cavity was much influential to the physiologic rest position.

  • Tongue posture at rest position of Class III malocclusion is very important in malocclusion and phonation. Because Class III malocclusion shoves low tongue position, speech defect is commonly occured. This study was attempted to evaluate the correlationship between the tongue posture at rest position and during /s/ phonation and facial skeleton in centric occlusion. Thirty subjects with Class III malocclusion who had no orofacial defects such as cleft palate, medical history of neurologic pathology, hearing defect and any previous speech therapy were selected. Ninety sheets of lateral cephalometric radiographs taken at rest position, during /s/ phonation and centric occlusion were traced, measured and statistically analysed. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. In Class III malocclusion, the posture of tongue was positively correlated with the position of hyoid body. The hyoid body was positioned anteriorly and inferiorly as the vertical facial skeleton was increased in centric occlusion. 2. In Class III malocclusion, the vertical position of tongue tip at rest position was not correlated with facial skeleton in centric occlusion, but the horizontal position had low correlation with mandibular body length, APDI, and $\underline{1}$ to SN. 3. In Class III malocclusion, there was the tendency that the dorsal position of the tongue was lowered as the vertical facial skeleton was increased. 4. In Class III malocclusion, the vertical and horizontal position of tongue tip during /s/ phonation was not correlated with facial skeleton in centric occlusion.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of head posture and occlusal splint on the vertical dimension in mandibular rest position and swallowing. Thirty health dental students ware selected lot this study and BioEGNⓡ(Bioresearch Inc., USA) was used for measuring interocclusal distance during rest - swallowing - rest - tapping movement. This swallowing movements were observed in both normal head posture(NHP) and forward head posture (FHP). Thickness of occlusal splint was about 2mm at posterior molar area and even tooth contact were achieved on light biting. The four mandibular positions at which interocclusal distance measured were swallowing position, after swallowing position in which interocclusal distance was maximum, rest position follows swallowing, and tapping position after rest. Changes of distance in each position were measured for three mandibular planes, that is, sagittal, frontal, and horizontal plane, respectively. The results obtained were as follows : 1. In normal head posture, the mandible was raised 1.03mm without splint, and 0.77mm with splint on swallowing, and there was no significant difference between the two. In horizontal plane, however, mandible was displaced more anteriorly in both swallowing position and tapping position with splint. 2. In forward head posture, the mandible was less raised with splint on swallowing, but features in horizontal plane were almost same as those in normal head posture. 3. In natural dentition, significant difference between NHP and FHP were observed in horizontal plane trajectory for swallowing and tapping position. But the difference for same positions were observed in frontal trajectory with splint. 4. Total amount of mandibular movement of two groups classified with sagittal interocclusal distance of swallowing position generally showed significant difference between the higher and the lower height group in head posture without splint. 5. Correlationship among total amount of mandibular movement for three mandibular planes were observed between sagittal plane and horizontal plane, and between sagittal plane and frontal plane in head posture without splint.

  • Mandibular rest position is very essential position because in that position, masticatory muscularture can be reciprocally coordinative and unstrained. So obtaining a good ability to establish and maintain rest position in non-functioning state is mandatory for treatment of patient with craniomandibular disorders. In general, many types of mandibulr movement exercise start from rest position and use the sense of muscle relearning, that is, muscle smoothness and relaxation, throughout the exercise period. In this study, 44 normal subjects for control group and 37 patients with craniomandibular disorders for experimental group participated and they were classified into 3 subgroups, respectively. One method to guide mandibular rest position was used for one subgroup, so theree methods were used for this study, 1)self-guided rest position without any education, 2) guided by Rocabado's tongue rest position, 3) guided through swallowing after Dawson's centric relation. To record electromyographic activity, Bioelectric processor EM2 (Myotronics, U.S.A.) was used. The numbers of sessions from start to stable resting electromyographic level and muscle activities in stable state were recorded and two recordings which were first and second, 3 days after first recording, were done, The data were processed with SPSS/PC+package. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Mean number of sessions in second recording were fewer than those in first recording in both groups. In comparison among 3 subgroups, mean number of sessions of subgroup guided through Dawson's method were fewer than those of other groups though it is not statistically significant. 2. There was a difference of mean number of sessions between control and experimental group in first recording, but in second recording there was no difference in any cases. 3. Mean value of muscle activity were generally not different without regard to group and method if once come to stable resting position level. Mean value of muscle activity of guided subgroups showed a tendency of decreasing in second recording than in first recording. However, in self-guided subgroup there was a inconsistent pattern. 4. The amounts of change in session number from first to second recording in control group were fewer than those in experimental group.

  • In order to observe the effect of mandibular orthopedic repositioning appliance (MORA) on body strength, the author measured back muscle strength with Digital Back Muscle DYNAMOMETER (TAKEI KIKI KOGYO Co., Tokyo, Japan) before MORA, 15 days after and 30 days after MORA in 12 men and then analysed them statistically. The subjects were weight-lifting athletes of Seoul Athletic High School without dysfunction of masticatory system. MORA was fabricated at 1.0-1.5rnm isotonically closed position (Myocentric Occlusion Position) from mandibular rest position (Myocentric Rest Position) using Myo-monitor (MyoTronics Research Inc., Seattle, Washington, USA) and-SVT C-II (Tokyo Shizaisha Inc., Tokyo, Japan). The results were as follows : 1. The mean of back muscle strength before MORA was 150 kg, that of 15 days after MORA was 165 kg (4.43% increase than before), and that of 30 days was 175 kg (10.76% increase than before). 2. There was a significant difference among back muscle strength before MORA, 15 days after and 30 days after MORA (P<0.01: repeated measures one-way ANOVA). 3. According to the result of determining mandibular position for MORA fabrication, mandibular rest position after relaxation with Myo-monitor was 3.2mm lower, 1.0mm posterior, and 0.5 mm left from centric occlusion. And the mean of the amount of lateral deviation was 0.7 mm.
