A stochastic response spectrum method is proposed for simple evaluation of the structural response of an actively controlled aseismic structure. The response spectrum is constructed assuming a linear structure with an active mass damper (AMD) system, and an earthquake wave model given by the product of a non-stationary envelope function and a stationary Gaussian random process with Kanai-Tajimi power spectral density. The control design is executed using a linear quadratic Gaussian control strategy for an enlarged state space system, and the response amplification factor is given by the combination of the obtained statistical response values and extreme value theory. The response spectrum thus produced can be used for simple dynamical analyses. The response factors obtained by this method for a multi-degree-of-freedom structure are shown to be comparable with those determined by numerical simulations, demonstrating the validity and utility of the proposed technique as a simple design tool. This method is expected to be useful for engineers in the initial design stage for structures with active aseismic control.
This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the motions and mooring characteristics of a floating vertical axis wind turbine system. Based on a comparison of regular wave experiment results, the motions of structures with different types of mooring are almost the same. Based on the tension response results of a regular wave experiment with a catenary mooring system, the mooring lines in front of the structure have a larger tension effect than the back of the structure by the drifted offset of the structure. The dynamic response spectrum of the structure in the irregular wave experiments showed no significant differences in response to differences in the mooring system. As a result of the comparison of the tension response spectra, the mooring lines have a larger value with a drifted offset for the structure, as shown in the previous regular wave experiment. The results of the dynamic response of the structure under irregular wave and wind conditions showed that the heave motion response is influenced by the coupled effect with the mooring lines of the surge and pitch motion due to the drifted offset and steady heeling. In addition, the mooring lines in front of the structure have a very large tension force compared to the mooring lines in back of the structure as a result of the drifted offset of the structure.
In this paper, the feasibility of the cost function having two control factors were discussed in compared to two others which has one different control factor respectively. As of the control factors, the dynamic response of a discrete system and the vibrational intensity at the reference point which is the connecting point of a discrete system to a flexible beam were controlled actively by the control force obtained from the minimization of the cost function. The method of feedforward control was employed for the control strategy. The reduction levels of the dynamic response of a discrete system and the vibrational intensity at a reference point, and also the input power induced by the control force were evaluated numerically in cases of the three different cost functions. In comparison with the results obtained from the cost functions of one control factor, which is the dynamic response or the vibrational intensity, in most cases of the cost function of two control factors the better or similar results were obtained. As a conclusion, it is surely noted that both the dynamic response and the vibrational intensity of the vibrating system be controlled up to the expected level by using the single cost function having two control factors.
Uncomfortable feelings of occupants by indoor floor impact noise in a residential building are not accurately represented by the floor impact noise from a standard impact source. It is due to the characteristics of standard impact sources, which are different from the impact forces produced by occupants. It varies significantly by impact source, and it is not easy to be replicated for testing. As a result, the indoor floor impact noise under different acoustic conditions cannot be directly compared. Using frequency response function(FRF), which represents the input-output relationships of a dynamic system, it is possible to examine the characteristics of the system. Especially, FRF can predict the response of a linear dynamic system subjected to various excitation. To determine the relationship between impact force and the corresponding response of dynamic system in residential building, the acceleration response of a concrete slab and the floor impact noise in the living room, produced by bang-machine and rubber-ball excitation, were measured. The test results are compared to the estimates based on FRF and impact force spectrum.
To ensure structural integrity of membrane type LNG tank, the rational assessment of the sloshing impact responses of tank structures should be preceded. The sloshing impact pressures acting on the insulation system of LNG tank are typical irregular loads and the resulting structural responses show very complex behaviors accompanied with fluid structure interaction. So it is not easy to estimate them accurately and immense time consuming calculation process would be necessary. In this research, a simplified method to analyse the dynamic structural responses of LNG tank insulation system under pressure time histories obtained by sloshing model test or numerical analysis was studied. The proposed technique based on the concept of linear combination of the triangular response functions which are the transient responses of structures under the unit triangular impact pressure acting on structures. The validity of suggested method was verified through the example calculations and applied to the dynamic structural response analysis of a real Mark III membrane type insulation system using the sloshing impact pressure time histories obtained by model test.
Turbine-generator torsional response is caused by interaction between electrical transient air-gap torque and mechanical characteristics of turbine-generator shafts. If torsional shaft torque exceeds a certain threshold, the loss of fatigue life may occur and, in the end, it is possible to happen permanent shaft failure. Therefore, it is required to understand the torsional response for reliable operation and protection of turbine-generator shaft system. In this paper, we introduced multi-mass modeling method of turbine-generator shaft system using mechanical-electrical analogy and state-space equation to verify the transient torsional response based on ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP). These simple realization methods for turbine-generator shaft torsional response could be helpful to understand torsional interaction phenomena and develop the transient torque reduction countermeasures for turbine-generator shaft system.
The effects of variability of the mechanical properties of lead rubber bearings on the response of a seismic isolation system are investigated. Material variability in manufacturing, aging, and operation temperature is assumed, and two variation models of an isolation system are considered. To evaluate the effect of ground motion characteristics on the response, 27 earthquake record sets with different peak A/V ratios were selected, and three components of ground motions were used for a seismic response analysis. The response in an isolation system and a superstructure increases significantly for ground motions with low A/V ratios. The variation in the mechanical properties of isolators results in a significant influence on the shear strains of the isolators and the acceleration response of the superstructure. The variation provisions in the ASCE-4 are reasonable, but more strict variation limits should be given to isolation systems subjected to ground motions having low A/V ratios. For application of seismic isolation systems to safety-related nuclear structures, the variation in the material and mechanical properties of the isolation system should be properly controlled during the manufacturing and aging processes. In addition, special consideration should be given to minimize the accidental torsion caused by the dissimilarity in the stiffness variations of the isolators.
Using vertical links in eccentric braced frames is one of the best passive structural control approaches due to its effectiveness and practicality advantages. However, in spite of the subject importance there are limited studies which evaluate the seismic reliability and response reduction factor (R-factor) in this system. Therefore, the present study has been conducted to improve the current understanding about failure mechanism in the structural systems equipped with vertical links. For this purpose, following definition of demand and capacity response reduction factors, these parameters are computed for three different buildings (4, 8 and 12 stories) equipped with this system. In this regards, pushover and incremental dynamic analysis have been employed, and seismic reliability as well as multi-level response reduction factor according to the seismic demand and capacity of the frames have been derived. Based on the results, this system demonstrates high ductility and seismic energy dissipation capacity, and using the response reduction factor as high as 8 also provides acceptable reliability for the frame in the moderate and high earthquake intensities. This system can be used in original buildings as lateral load resisting system in addition to seismic rehabilitation of the existing buildings.
The current study aims to propose a reorganization plan for the national emergency management system to improve the current organizational structure for responding to national disasters and emergency situations. As a theoretical framework, the current study identified four key elements of successful disaster response systems: responsiveness, controllability, expertise, and devotedness. On the basis of the four key elements of disaster response systems, this study critically reviewed the current state of the organizational structure of the Korean national emergency response system by discussing the issues inherent in the current structure and by doing a comparative analysis of two high-profile national disaster cases-the Sewol ferry disaster in 2014 and the Gwangsan Rescue of buried people in 2013. Then, this study proposed the reorganization plan for the national disaster response system in which the NEMA is under direct control of the Prime Minister of Korea. It coordinates and controls the related government departments, such as the police, maritime police, and military during the national disaster and emergency situation. This study also proposed a reorganizational plan for the regional disaster response system in Korea. Finally, it was suggested that the status of firefighters should be elevated to the national public servant level in order to achieve organizational efficiency and solve existing problems that come from the current separated systems.
Quorum sensing and the stringent response are well-known regulation systems for the expression of virulence genes in enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC). However, how these two systems interact is not well known. E. coli strains with mutations in two regulation systems, ${\Delta}luxS$ (ECM101) and ${\Delta}luxS{\Delta}relA{\Delta}spoT$ (ECM201), and the ${\Delta}luxS$ complement strain to ECM201 (ECM202) were created from EHEC O157:H7 EDL933 to investigate how the regulatory systems interact. The phenotypic changes of the mutant strains were characterized and compared with the wild type. The mutant strains exhibited no obvious growth defects, although acid resistance and cellular cytotoxicity were decreased significantly in all the mutant strains. Phenotypic characterization revealed that mutations in the stringent response system (ECM201 and ECM202) influenced the metabolic (defective utilization of arabinose and L-sorbose) and enzymatic activities (decreased trypsin activity, and increased ${\alpha}$-glucosidase activity). In contrast, the quorum sensing system mutant (ECM101) did not display these phenotypes. The motility of the quorum sensing system mutant (ECM101) was unchanged, but mutation in the stringent response system influenced the motility. Our results suggest that quorum sensing interacts with the stringent response regulation system.
