Response surface methodology (RSM) is one of popular tools to support a systematic improvement of quality of design in the product and process development stages. It consists of statistical modeling and optimization tools. RSM can be viewed as a knowledge management tool in that it systemizes knowledge about a manufacturing process through a big data analysis on products and processes. The conventional RSM aims to optimize the mean of a response, whereas dual-response surface optimization (DRSO), a special case of RSM, considers not only the mean of a response but also its variability or standard deviation for optimization. Recently, a posterior preference articulation approach receives attention in the DRSO literature. The posterior approach first seeks all (or most) of the nondominated solutions with no articulation of a decision maker (DM)'s preference. The DM then selects the best one from the set of nondominated solutions a posteriori. This method has a strength that the DM can understand the trade-off between the mean and standard deviation well by looking around the nondominated solutions. A posterior method has been proposed for DRSO. It employs an interval selection strategy for the selection step. This strategy has a limitation increasing inefficiency and complexity due to too many iterations when handling a great number (e.g., thousands ~ tens of thousands) of nondominated solutions. In this paper, a TOPSIS-based method is proposed to support a simple and efficient selection of the most preferred solution. The proposed method is illustrated through a typical DRSO problem and compared with the existing posterior method.
The frontal crash optimization of S-shaped closed-hat section member using the homogenization method, design of experiment (DOE) and response surface method (RSM) was studied. The optimization to effectively absorb more crash energy was studied to introduce the reinforcement design. The main focus of design was to decide the optimum size and thickness of reinforcement. In this study, the location of reinforcement was decided by homogenization method. Also, the effective size and thickness of reinforcements was studied by design of experiments and response surface method. The effects of various impact velocity for reinforcement design were researched. The high impact velocity reinforcement design showed to absorb the more crash energy than low velocities design. The effect of size and thickness of reinforcement was studied and the sensitivity of size and thickness was different according to base thickness of model. The optimum size and thickness of the reinforcement has shown a direct proportion to the thickness of base model. Also, the thicker the base model was, the effect of optimization using reinforcement was the bigger. The trend curve for effective size and thickness of reinforcement using response surface method was obtained. The predicted size and thickness of reinforcement by RSM were compared with results of DOE. The results of a specific dynamic mean crushing loads for the predicted design by RSM were shown the small difference with the predicted results by RSM and DOE. These trend curves can be used as a basic guideline to find the optimum reinforcement design for S-shaped member.

Response Surface Method (RSM) has been widely used for flammable cloud size prediction as it can reduce computational intensity for further Explosion Risk Analysis (ERA) especially during the early design phase of offshore platforms. However, RSM encounters the overfitting problem under very limited simulations. In order to overcome the disadvantage of RSM, Bayesian Regularization Artificial Neural (BRANN)-based model has been recently developed and its robustness and efficiency have been widely verified. However, for ERA during the early design phase, there seems to be room to further reduce the computational intensity while ensuring the model's acceptable accuracy. This study aims to develop an integrated method, namely the combination of Center Composite Design (CCD) method with Bayesian Regularization Artificial Neural Network (BRANN), for flammable cloud size prediction. A case study with constant and transient leakages is conducted to illustrate the feasibility and advantage of this hybrid method. Additionally, the performance of CCD-BRANN is compared with that of RSM. It is concluded that the newly developed hybrid method is more robust and computational efficient for ERAs during early design phase.
This paper deals with the optimum design solution on reduction of torque ripple for a Synchronous Reluctance Motor with concentrated winding using response surface methodology. The coupled Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) & Preisach model have been used to evaluate the nonlinear solution. Comparisons are given with characteristics of a SynRM according to the stator winding, slot number, open width of slot, slot depth, teeth width variation in concentrated winding SynRM, respectively. This paper presents an optimization procedure using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to determine design parameters for reducing torque ripple. RSM has been achieved to use the experimental design method in combination with finite Element Method (FEM) and well adapted to make analytical model for a complex problem considering a lot of interaction of design variables. Moreover, Sequential Quadratic Problem (SQP) method is used to solve the resulting of constrained nonlinear optimization problem.
The experimental design methodology was applied in the drop tube furnace (DTF) to predict the various combustion properties according to the operating conditions and to assess the coal plant safety. Response surface method (RSM) was introduced as a design of experiment, and the database for RSM was set with the numerical simulation of DTF. The dependent variables such as burnout ratios (BOR) of coal and $CO/CO_2$ ratios were mathematically described as a function of three independent variables (coal particle size, carrier gas flow rate, wall temperature) being modeled by the use of the central composite design (CCD), and evaluated using a second-order polynomial multiple regression model. The prediction of BOR showed a high coefficient of determination (R2) value, thus ensuring a satisfactory adjustment of the second-order polynomial multiple regression model with the simulation data. However, $CO/CO_2$ ratio had a big difference between calculated values and predicted values using conventional RSM, which might be mainly due to the dependent variable increses or decrease very steeply, and hence the second order polynomial cannot follow the rates. To relax the increasing rate of dependent variable, $CO/CO_2$ ratio was taken as common logarithms and worked again with RSM. The application of logarithms in the transformation of dependent variables showed that the accuracy was highly enhanced and predicted the simulation data well.
Traditional occupant analysis has been performed with a pre-determined crash puse which is produced from a test and the involved components are designed based on the analysis resuls. The method has limitations in that the design does not have much freedom. Howrver, if a good crash pulse is proposed, the body structure can be modified to generate the crash pulse. Therefore, it is assumed that the crash pulse can be changed to imptove the occupant crash performance. A preferable crash pulse is determined to minimize the occupant injuty. A constraint is established to keep the phenomena of physics valid. The response surface method(RSM) is adopted for the optimization process. An RSM in a commercial code is utilzed by interfacing with an in-house occupant analysis program called SAFE(Safety Analysis For occupant crash Enviroment). Design of involved components called is carried out through optimization with the RSM. The advantages of the RSM are investigated as opposed to other methods, and the tesults are compared. Also, the design under the new crach pulse is compared with that trom the pre-detetmined pulse.
In this study, response surface method (RSM), back propagation neural network (BPNN), and genetic algorithm (GA) were used for modeling and multi-objective optimization of the parameters of AA5052-H32 in incremental sheet forming (ISF). The goal of optimization is to determine the maximum forming angle and minimum surface roughness, while varying the production process parameters, such as tool diameter, tool spindle speed, step depth, and tool feed rate. A Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD) was used to develop an RSM model and BPNN model to model the variations in the forming angle and surface roughness based on variations in process parameters. Subsequently, the RSM model was used as the fitness function for multi-objective optimization of the ISF process the GA. The results showed that RSM and BPNN can be effectively used to control the forming angle and surface roughness. The optimized Pareto front produced by the GA can be utilized as a rational design guide for practical applications of AA5052 in the ISF process
In the shear-lag analysis of structures deterministic procedure is insufficient to provide complete information. Probabilistic analysis is a holistic approach for analyzing shear-lag effects considering uncertainties in structural parameters. This paper proposes an efficient and accurate algorithm to analyze shear-lag effects of structures with parameter uncertainties. The proposed algorithm integrated the advantages of the response surface method (RSM), finite element method (FEM) and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Uncertainties in the structural parameters can be taken into account in this algorithm. The algorithm is verified using independently generated finite element data. The proposed algorithm is then used to analyze the shear-lag effects of a simply supported beam with parameter uncertainties. The results show that the proposed algorithm based on the central composite design is the most promising one in view of its accuracy and efficiency. Finally, a parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of each of the random variables on the statistical moment of structural stress response.
Currently hydrofluoric acid (HF) based glass etch method is widely used for anti-glare (AG) surface treatment since it can effectively alleviate the specular reflection problem with relatively low processing cost. However, due to the environmental regulation and safety problem, it is essential to develop alternative technology to replace this method. For this, in this paper, we propose sand blasting based AG surface treatment method for display glass. To characterize the sand blasting process, surface roughness, haze, surface durability, and flatness are considered as process outputs and central composite design (CCD) method and response surface model (RSM) method are applied to model each process output. Models for surface roughness and haze showed 96.44% and 97.24% of R-squared values, respectively and they can be applied to optimize AG surface treatment process for various haze level requirements of display industries.
Response surface methodology (RSM) is a group of statistical modeling and optimization methods to improve the quality of design systematically in the quality engineering field. Its final goal is to identify the optimal setting of input variables optimizing a response. RSM is a kind of knowledge management tool since it studies a manufacturing or service process and extracts an important knowledge about it. In a real problem of RSM, it is a quite frequent situation that considers multiple responses simultaneously. To date, many approaches are proposed for solving (i.e., optimizing) a multi-response problem: process capability function approach, desirability function approach, loss function approach, and so on. The process capability function approach first estimates the mean and standard deviation models of each response. Then, it derives an individual process capability function for each response. The overall process capability function is obtained by aggregating the individual process capability function. The optimal setting is given by maximizing the overall process capability function. The existing process capability function methods usually use the arithmetic mean or geometric mean as an aggregation operator. However, these operators do not guarantee the Pareto optimality of their solution. Moreover, they may bring out an unacceptable result in terms of individual process capability function values. In this paper, we propose a maximin-based process capability function method which uses a maximin criterion as an aggregation operator. The proposed method is illustrated through a well-known multiresponse problem.
