  • In order to secure the stability against strong earthquakes, isolation devices on the existing nuclear power plant have been introduced. By applying the isolation device on structures, it is possible to isolate structures from the ground motion. Therefore, the natural frequencies of the structures become longer, and the responses of the structures due to the ground motion decrease. Especially, when designing the nuclear power plant, it is important to ensure the safety of internal devices as well as the nuclear power plant itself. The floor response spectrum is commonly used in designing the internal devices. In this research, floor response spectrum is evaluated and the effect of second hardening behavior is investigated by performing earthquake analysis.

  • The paper presents a novel embedded multifunctional media sever (EMMS) for mobile devices to receive various media programs. Being different from other contemporary system research, the paper mainly studies how to design a reception solution for terrestrial digital television (DTV) on mobile devices and how to enable mobile devices can receive DTV program, enjoy video-on-demand (VOD), achieve video surveillance and relay Internet video program via local Wi-Fi simultaneously. In the system design, we integrate broadcasting-terrestrial DTV tuner, streaming media re-transmission system, VOD disk, video camera and access interface to the Internet into EMMS, which can either receive terrestrial DTV radio signals and demodulate out digital transport stream (TS), or can read streaming media bit-stream from VOD disk, surveillance camera or access interface to the Internet. The experimental results show the proposed system is stable and quality-efficient. Comparing with the other systems, the proposed system has the least packet loss rate and response time.

  • Flexible structures may experience excessive levels of vibration under the action of wind, adversely affecting serviceability and occupant comfort. To ensure the functional performance of a structure, various design modifications are possible, ranging from alternative structural systems to the utilization of passive and active control devices. This paper presents an overview of state-of-the-art measures that reduce the structural response of buildings, including a summary of recent work in aerodynamic tailoring and a discussion of auxiliary damping devices for mitigating the wind-induced motion of structures. In addition, some discussion of the application of such devices to improve structural resistance to seismic events is also presented, concluding with detailed examples of the application of auxiliary damping devices in Australia, Canada, China, Japan, and the United States.

  • Seismic Isolation and Shock/vibration Control Laboratory has performed the National Research Laboratory(NRL) project, 'Design and Application of Control Devices against Earthquake/Shock/Vibration'. In this project, the prototypes of the vibration control devices for structural control against earthquake and wind were developed and verified their performances. And also, the computer programs were developed for the seismic response analysis and the optimum design of the base-isolated structures with vibration control devices. This paper introduces the developed vibration control devices and computer programs.

  • The research field of structural control has evolved from the development of passive devices since 1970s, through the intensive investigation on active systems in 1980s, to the recent studies of semi-active control systems in 1990s. Currently semi-active control is considered most promising in civil engineering applications. However, actual implementation of semi-active devices is still limited due mainly to their system maintenance and associated long-term reliability as a result of power requirement. In this paper, the concept of functionally upgraded passive devices is introduced to streamline some of the state-of-the-art researches and guide the development of new passive devices that can mimic the function of their corresponding semi-active control devices for various applications. The general characteristics of this special group of passive devices are discussed and representative examples are summarized. Their superior performances are illustrated with cyclic and shake table tests of two example devices: mass-variable tuned liquid damper and friction-pendulum bearing with a variable sliding surface curvature.

  • Response time of actuator in a hydraulic system may be important and necessary to avoid failures and to improve the efficiency of operation. Flow restricting devices can result in a decrease in the peak pressure, but may change the response time. The response time has an important effect on both operator and operator perceived smoothness. The response time should correspond to how fast a system responds to a given disturbance at the system boundary, Occasionally the appropriate response time is not easily determined. This study is on the characteristics of response time in the hydraulic system.

  • With the shift of the energy paradigm from supply side management to demand side management, demand resource management and demand response plays an important role in the energy industry. As a consequency, a lot of researches have been done to provide a suitable demand response system. However, most of the demand response systems are based on the propriety products that cannot be modified. In this paper, we are proposing an automated demand response system using an EnerNOC provided open source code. We implemented the demand response server (VTN) and demand response client (VEN), and validated the OpenADR2.0 compliances using the open source code. We also used an Arduino microcontoller to demonstrate the communication schemes to control various devices.

  • The response time represents how fast a system responds to a given disturbance at the system boundary. Flow restricting devices for controlling transients can result in a decrease in the peakm pressure, but may change response time. Response lag in a hydraulic system leads to inefficient working cycle and operator discomfort. The experiments were conducted in order to get information on the parameters which exert appreciable influence on the response time. The experimental apparatu including a hydraulic actuator, orifice and a hydraulic pump was an idealization of a bucket hydraulic shifting system. Experimental results show that the response time depends on operating pressure and flow rate. The effects of orifice type and size on the response time are quantified.

  • SAW filters were fabricated on $LiNbO_3$ substrates to evaluate frequency response and properties of photolithography. In the both of etch and lift-off methods, lift off method was superior to etch method in fabrication process. Frequency response property was measured by network analyzer. From measurement of acoustic property, SAW propagation velocity was 3574.9m/sec for $LiNbO_3$ SAW filter.
