Conventional analysis of spectral induced polarization (SIP) data consists of measuring impedances over a range of frequencies, followed by spectral analysis to estimate spectral parameters. For the quantitative and accurate estimation of subsurface SIP parameter distribution, however, a sophisticated and stable inversion technique is required. In this study, we have developed a two-step inversion approach to obtain the two-dimensional distribution of SIP parameters. In the first inversion step, all the SIP data measured over a range of frequencies are simultaneously inverted, adopting cross regularisation of model complex resistivities at each frequency. The cross regularisation makes it possible to enhance the noise characteristics of the inversion by imposing a strong assumption, that complex resistivities should show similar characteristics over a range of frequencies. In numerical experiments, we could verify that our inversion approach successfully reduced inversion artefacts. As a second step, we have also developed an inversion algorithm to obtain SIP parameters based on the Cole-Cole model, in which frequency-dependent complex resistivities from the first step are inverted to obtain a two-dimensional distribution of SIP parameters. In numerical tests, the SIP parameter images showed a fairly good match with the exact model, which suggests that SIP imaging can provide a very useful subsurface image to complement resistivity.
We have developed an inversion code for three-dimensional (3D) resistivity tomography including the anisotropy effect. The algorithm is based on the finite element approximations for the forward modelling and Active Constraint Balancing method is adopted to enhance the resolving power of the smoothness constraint least-squares inversion. Using numerical experiments, we have shown that anisotropic inversion is viable to get an accurate image of the subsurface when the subsurface shows strong electrical anisotropy. Moreover, anisotropy can be used as additional information in the interpretation of subsurface. This algorithm was also applied to the field dataset acquired in the abandoned old mine area, where a high-rise apartment block has been built up over a mining tunnel. The main purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the safety analysis of the building due to old mining activities. Strong electrical anisotropy has been observed and it was proven to be caused by geological setting of the site. To handle the anisotropy problem, field data were inverted by a 3D anisotropic tomography algorithm and we could obtain 3D subsurface images, which matches well with geology mapping observations. The inversion results have been used to provide the subsurface model for the safety analysis in rock engineering and we could assure the residents that the apartment has no problem in its safety after the completion of investigation works.
Many trials to set up the correlation between the rock mass classification and the earth resistivity have been carried out to design tunnel support type based on the interpreted electrical resistivity acquired by surface electrical survey. But it is hard to find reports on the comparison of the real rock support type determined during the excavation with the electrical resistivity by the inversion of the survey data acquired before the tunneling. In this study, the rock mass classification based on the face mapping data and the resistivity inversion data are investigated to see if it is possible to design reliably the rock support type based on the surface electrical survey. To get the quantitative correlation, rock engineering indices such as RCR(rock condition rating), N(Rock mass number), Q-system and RMR(rock mass rating) are calculated. Since resistivity data has low resolution, Kriging method as a post processing technique which minimizes the estimated variance is used to improve resolution. The result of correlation analysis shows that the 2D electrical resistivity survey is appropriate to see the general trend of the geology in the sense of rock type, though there might be some local area where these two factors do not coincide. But the correlation between the result of 3D survey and the rock mass classification turns out to be very high, and then 3D electrical resistivity survey can make it possible to set up more reliable rock support type.

Although the problem of seawater intrusion at the coastal aquifer was recognized before over one hundred years at the coastal aquifer, much groundwater keep on being salinitized by several reasons such as groundwater exhaustion, coastalline change, and human activities. The horizontal and vertical electrical soundings and geostatistical methods were used to define the local characteristics of saltwater intrusion and to estimate the saltwater interface in the southeastern area of the Pusan City. The 24 points of the Schlumberger vertical electrical soundings(VES) to loom depth and the 2 lines of dipole-dipole horizontal soundings are peformed. The resistivity data have lognormal distributions. The horizontal extents of saline water intrusion were estimated from the inversion of horizontal prospecting data. Lognormal ordinary kriging is used in A-A' resistivity profiles on May and July because the data have stationary models in semivariograms. Lognormal IRF-k kriging is used for the isopleth maps using vertical resistivity data. The 10 ohm-m resistivity line on the isopleth maps of 21m, 30m, 50m, and 70m depth using resisitivity data measured in July is sifted to the east, cpomparing that of the isopleth maps measured in May. The kriged vertical and horizontal resistivity isopleth maps suggested that the geostatistical methods can be used to define the variation of earth resistivity distribution at the saltwater interface.
Resistivity data should be edited before the inversion because resistivity data are contaminated by a lot of noise. Generally, outlier or data violating pants-leg effect in dipole-dipole array were used to be rejected in the apparent resistivity pseudo-section. For more precise data editing, normalized voltage curves are used. In this study, we analyzed the behavior of normalized voltage curves for pole-pole, pole-dipole and dipole-dipole arrays in the presence of threedimensional inhomogeneities, and finally re-examined the validity of normalized voltage curves in the editing process of resistivity data.
Bayesian inversion is a stable approach to infer the subsurface structure with the limited data from geophysical explorations. In geophysical inverse process, due to the finite and discrete characteristics of field data and modeling process, some uncertainties are inherent and therefore probabilistic approach to the geophysical inversion is required. Bayesian framework provides theoretical base for the confidency and uncertainty analysis for the inference. However, most of the Bayesian inversion require the integration process of high dimension, so massive calculations like a Monte Carlo integration is demanded to solve it. This method, though, seemed suitable to apply to the geophysical problems which have the characteristics of highly non-linearity, we are faced to meet the promptness and convenience in field process. In this study, by the Gaussian approximation for the observed data and a priori information, fast Bayesian inversion scheme is developed and applied to the model problem with electric well logging and dipole-dipole resistivity data. Each covariance matrices are induced by geostatistical method and optimization technique resulted in maximum a posteriori information. Especially a priori information is evaluated by the cross-validation technique. And the uncertainty analysis was performed to interpret the resistivity structure by simulation of a posteriori covariance matrix.
There are three types of frequency-domain loop-loop EM induction method, depending on the loop separation and their location relative to the ground surface: horizontal-loop EM (HLEM), fixed small-loop EM, and helicopter-borne EM (HEM) methods. Multidimensional inversion provides tomographic images of the subsurface resistivity structure and thus enhances the interpretational accuracy of loop-loop EM data. HLEM method is shown to be effective for exploring groundwater resources in weathered and fractured crystalline basement terrains in semi-arid regions. Also, HEM method is useful for locating weak zones in landslide areas. The applicability of inversion to small-loop EM data depends solely on the S/N ratio. The quadrature response of small-loop EM data can only give the equivalent conductivity of a homogenous half-space model, and thus the in-phase component is essential in inverting EM data. However, the in-phase response is much lower and decreases more rapidly with decreasing frequency than the quadrature response. Further work is needed to obtain conductivity-depth images from small-loop EM data.
In order to investigate ground state change visually in physical model during centrifuge testing, electrical resistivity survey was adopted. Commercial resistivity survey equipment verified at various in-situ sites was utilized. The resistivity survey equipment installed in centrifuge facility was remotely controlled through intranet and electrical resistivity images obtained while centrifuge testing was being checked by real-time inversion. To verify the stable operation of the developed resistivity survey system, preliminary tests were conducted. Model ground was uniformly constructed using unsaturated soil and saline water was dropped on the ground surface to simulate contaminant flow situation. During the 10 g centrifuge tests, electrical resistivity was continuously detected and the testing results were compared with those of identically carried out 1 g centrifuge tests. In addition, the electrical resistivity was directly measured immediately after the centrifuge test by open cutting the model. Finally, reliability of electrical resistivity survey in the centrifuge test was verified by comparing those testing results.
To analyze soil properties with depth in rice field, we compared resistivity distributions obtained from soil analysis with one dimensional inversion of small loop electromagnetic (EM) data. Although it didn't show consistency exactly between the two resistivity distributions, low resistivity zones in soil analysis, appeared to agree with low resistivity zones in EM result. Therefore, small loop EM method can be applied to obtain rapidly the soil properties such as salt accumulation in a rice field. If research on soil property and EM responses of unsaturated zone would be conducted consistently, small loop EM method can be used effectively to detect salt accumulated zone in agricultural area.
