Eight naked barley cultivars were grown in three production systems to select proper cultivars for dual production of forage and grain and to determine production system x cultivar interactions. In the forage systems. barley was seeded on September 27 and October 17, harvested for forage on November 1. December 10 and February 12 from the September 27 planting (forage system I) and on December 10 and February 12 from the October 17 seeding(forage system II). In the grain-only system, barley was planted on November 5. In forage system I, oven-dried forage yields of eight cultivars ranged 195 to 296kg/10a and Saessalbori and Naehanssalbori yielded significantly higher than the other cultivars recording 280 and 296kg/ l0a, respectively. In forage system II, oven-dried forage yields of eight cultivars ranged 106 to 143kg/10a showing no significant difference among cultivars. Production system x cultivar interactions were significant for lodging at maturity, powdery mildew rating, 1000 kernel weight and grain yield. Leaf area index and biomass at heading, no. of spikes per $m^2$, no. of kernels per spike and test weight were not affected by the production system. Forage utilization delayed heading by 3 days and reduced culm length, spike length, lodging due to heavy rain on May 5 and lodging at maturity except for Songhagbori and Naehanssalbori. Forage utilization did not significantly affect grain yield from the September 27 planting but reduced 9% from the October 17 planting. while Saessalbori and Hyangcheonggwa 1 yielded significantly less than in the grain-only system. Songhagbori appears to be a proper cultivar for dual production of forage and grain in Cheju, considering forage and grain yields. and lodging and powdery mildew resistance.
"Nunbora" is a new japonica rice cultivar developed from a cross between Iksan433 resistant to bacterial blight and Miyadamamochi, a waxy line. at Honam Agricultural Research Institute, NICS, RDA, in 2006. This cultivar is a short grain shape and about 118 days of growth duration from transplanting "Nunbora" to harvesting under Korean climatic conditions. The milled rice are snow white and glutinuous. This cultivar shows high resistant reactions to the bacterial blight pathogen race $K_1{\sim}K_3$ and blast respectively. The milled rice yield of "Nunbora" is about 5.34 MT/ha under the standard fertilizer level of the ordinary transplanting cultivation. "Nunbora" would be adaptable for in the middle plain, north middle-mountin plain and Honam plain, and Youngnam plain areas of Korea.
A new soybean cultivar 'Daewang' was released by Agricultural Research & Extension Services, Gangwon Province in 2008. The Goals of breeding the variety was for large seed size, high yield, lodging tolerance and resistance to diseases such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV) and bacterial pustule. 'Daewang' was derived from the cross of GWS91, which has yellow seed coat, large seed size and late maturity, and 'Seokryang-putkong', which has large seed size and early maturity. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection were carried out from 2002 to 2007. It has a determinate growth habit with purple flower, yellow seed coat, yellow hilum and large seed weight (33.6 g per 100 seeds). The maturity date of 'Daewang' is 16 days later than the 'Taekwang'. It has a high content of total isoflavone ($1,851{\mu}g/g$). The average yield of 'Daewang' was 2.68 MT/ha in the regional yield trials (RYT) carried out in four locations in Gangwon province from 2004 to 2007 which was 4 percent higher than the check cultivar 'Taekwang'.
A new spary chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Pinky' was bred from a cross between 'Rima' and 'Yen'. Progenies were investigated from 2004 to 2006 under shading culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn and the promising line was selected based on the performance of year-round production, white rust resistance and vase life. Pinky flowered around 20 October, and year-round production was possible by shading and lighting. Its flower was 3.1 cm in diameter, and had 38.4 petals and 26.8 flowers per stem in autumn. Its petal was narrow (0.4 cm) and pink with green in color at the flower center. Days to flower from short-day start for 'Pinky' was about 47 in spring. 'Pinky' showed a vase life of 20.9 days in autumn. This cultivar was commercially registered in 2007. 'Pinky' would be suitable for culture under the greenhouse and rain shelter condition in Korea.
To cope with increasing importance of water stress in food crop production, some physiological characteristics, their cultivar-differences and grain yield of winter barley cultivars in response to water stress during reproductive stages were studied employing three covered-barley cultivars, Milyang 12, Durubori, and Olbori, one naked-barley cultivar, Baegdong, and one two-row malting-barley cultivar, Hyangmaeg. The barley grown in pot-soil was conditioned for 10 days under water stress, varying the time of water stress : 20 days before heading, 10 days before heading and the time of heading. The decrease in growth due to water stress varied greatly with the cultivars and time of water stress. The greatest injury occurred when water stress was imposed for 10 days from 10 days before heading : the culm length of water-stressed plants have shown reduced by 85∼98% of the non-stressed; the number of spikes per plant by 52∼83%; the number of grains per spike by 71∼86%; 1,000-grain weight by 80∼84%; yield per pot by 60∼94%. The number of spikes per plant as one of yield components was most sensitively affected. As a whole, the drought resistance of cultivars was high in the order of Olbori> Milyang 12 and Durubori> Hyangmaeg>Baegdong. On rewatering the plants after termination of the water stress treatment the recovery rate of free proline content and relative turgidity of flag leaf were higher in 3 covered-barley cultivars, and lower in cultivars Baegdong and Hyangmaeg.

Powdery mildew (Podosphaera xanthii) commonly occurs in cultivated fields of melon (Cucumis melo L.). It inflicts a lot of damages. Therefore, breeding resistant lines is essential. Development of a resistant line by integrating resistance gene takes a long time. In addition, break down of developed resistance by generating new virulent fungus strains increases disease susceptibility. This phenomenon was related to races of powdery mildew. Therefore, it is important to develop a DNA marker to genetically analyze race-specific resistance genes of melon powdery mildew to breed resistant lines. To date, a total of 28 races of Podosphaera xanthii have been reported in the literature. In Japan, 10 races have been reported in the Ibaraki region. We developed a system to characterize the races of Podosphaera xanthii and confirmed eight out of those 10 races in the Ibaraki region. In Korea, only one race has been characterized to date. However, some different races were detected. Through genetic analysis of resistant lines and susceptible lines of powdery mildew, resistance genes of race1 (Pm-X, PXB, and Pm-R 1), race N1 (PXA), race 2 (Pm-w and Pm-R 2), race 3 (Pm-X3), and race 5 (Pm-X5 and Pm-R5) were identified in melon. These related genes of race 1, 3, N1, 5, and race 1, 2, 5 were located at linkage group II and V, respectively. In race 1, resistance gene was located in the linkage group XII. In addition, each race-specific marker related to specific resistance gene was developed. Using race information and race selection system obtained in this study, resistant line can be bred to develop resistant cultivar for several areas. Furthermore, this will make it more easily and economically to breed resistant lines by using selected markers.
This study was conducted to determine the inheritance to bacterial leaf blight in rice. Varieties used in the study were IR1544-349-2, IR1698-237-2, IR1529-680-3, IR28, IR29, RP663-337-7-8-4-1-1, RP291-20, 62-595 and Kele. The isolate of bacteial leaf blight used was 71-23, 76-1 of Xanthomonas oryzae. $F_1s$ were obtained from crosses between resistant and susceptible varieties. Field observation was made from the Parents, $F_1s$ and $F_2$ sagregating population. The result is summaryzed as fallow: 1) The resistance to the bacterial leaf blight (71-23) derived from cultivars IR1529-680-3, IR28, IR29, RP663-337-7-8-4-1-1, RP291-20 and 62-595 was controlled by a single dominant gene. 2) The resistance to the bacterial leaf blight (71-23) derived from cultivars IR1545-339-2, IR1544-340, IR1698-237-2 and Kele was controlled by a single recessive gene. 3) The resistance to the bacterial leaf blight (76-1) derived from cultivars IR1545-339-2, IR1544-340, IR 1698-237-2 was controlled by a single dominant gene. 4) Degree of resistance to the bacterial leaf blight and genetic type were different depending on isolates within the same resistant cultivar. 5) There was no relation between resistance to the bacterial leaf blight and heading days.
For initiation of resistance breeding program of the red pepper, 21 PR ($Phytophthora$ resistance) cultivars, 36 cultivars collected from USA and 'Supermanitta' which is a susceptible cultivar against phytophthora blight were assayed against phytophthora blight, powdery mildew, and anthracnose. For seedling assay of phytophthora blight, three different mating type strains of $Phytophthora$$capsici$ were used (A1, A2, Sterile). The result showed that most of the pepper of PR cultivars were resistance or moderately resistance at each mating type. 'Yeokganghongjanggun' was resistant to all three $P.$$capsici$ strains and 'PR-Datta' and 'PR-Manitta' were resistant or moderately resistant at each type. In case of the collected cultivars, 'NuMex J.E.Parker', 'Omni Color', and 'SCM334' were resistant to all the three types and some cultivars including 'Sweet Banana' and 'Tabasco' were moderately resistant to each type fungi. 'Orange Habanero' and 'Black Cuban' were resistant to powdery mildew and 'Supermanitta' and 'PR Keumdong' were moderately resistant, while 'Santa Fe Grande', 'NuMex Pinata' and 'Puya' were very susceptible. In the case of anthracnose, 'Aji Limon' and 'Capsicum baccatum var. pendulum 3-4' were resistant and 'Pobalno', 'Omni Color', 'Negro', 'Mesilla', 'Mulato', 'Bhut Jolokia', 'Big Dipper', 'Black Cuban', 'NuMex Pinata', and 'NuMex Big Jim' were moderately resistant. The most PR cultivars except 'Taesan' were susceptible or very susceptible. These resistant individuals identified through this experiment can be used as sources of resistance to pepper pathogens in the future breeding programs.
In previous reports, the treatment of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain EXTN-1 showed a broad diseasecontrolling spectrum to the plant diseases caused by viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens as well as the promotion of plant growth. In mechanisms of EXTN-1, treatment of EXTN-1 increased oxidative burst in early stage and induced the expression of resistance genes, PR-1a, PDF1.2. Mechanism involved in induced systemic resistance by EXTN-1 was revealed as simultaneous activation of SA and JA or ethylene metabolic pathways. The purpose of this study was to determine whether B. amyloliquefaciens EXTN-1 has a similar effect on rice plant against Rice stripe tenuivirus (RSV) under greenhouse conditions. When rice seeds were soaked in B. amyloliquefaciens strain EXTN-1, rice plants showed significant systemic resistance against RSV as well as promoted growth. In the case of plant growth, in 30-day old plants treated with B. amyloliquefaciens EXTN-1, the heights, weights, and lengths of roots increased by 12.6%, 9.8%, and 16.0%, respectively confirming the effects of PGPR. When the induced systemic resistance to RSV was examined, in 20-day old plants were treated with B. amyloliquefaciens EXTN-1, the heights, weights, and lengths of roots increased by 8.4%, 10.9%, and 4.8%, respectively compared to the control. Induced systemic resistance was more prominent in susceptible cultivars - Chucheong and Ilpum compared to the resistant cultivar, Nakdong.
This study was conducted to develop the testing method for excessive water tolerance at germinating stage and to screen 31 domestic peanut cultivars. Regardless of peanut grain scales, the amount of seed absorption nearly reached the peak in 10 hours after imbibition. When peanut seed in vermiculate soil was directly soaked in water, ability of emergence did not reduced until 16 days and then sharply reduce to 25 days with non-emergence. When seeds germinated for 1, 2, 3, and 4 days after seeding (DAS) were soaked, the emergence abilities were distinctively varied according to the sequent soaking days such as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days. This explained the negative relationship between first germinating days (DAS) and following soaking days. Using the method of 2 day germinating and 3 day soaking that show less than 70% of emergence ability, 31 peanut cultivars were applied to test excessive water tolerance. Emergence rates varied 0% to 69% according to cultivar. Cultivar Daekwang, Sinkwang, Daecheong and Baekseon had over 50% emergence rates. These results suggested that the degree of water resistance in germinating stage may be important point to evaluate the excessive water resistance among cultivars.
