A Study on the Combustion Characteristics of the Crown of Pine Trees in the Drying Season (건조기 소나무 수관부 부위별 연소특성에 관한 연구)

  • Pine trees, which account for 23% of the forested area of the Republic of Korea, are highly vulnerable to fire in comparison to broad-leaved trees due to the presence of consistent water tube sections throughout the year and resin that is composed of approximately 20% oil. In addition, the pattern of forest fires is determined by weather, topographic conditions, and fluctuation in moisture content. Therefore, when fire breaks out in pine tree forests during the dry season (January to March), it is difficult to extinguish, and it quickly spreads. In this study, the combustion characteristics of pine needles, pine cones, and pine branches in the water tube sections of living pine trees were compared and analyzed in accordance with the moisture content as per the ISO 5660-1. The monthly moisture content was analyzed from January to March, and it was found to be the lowest in March, with 53.6% for pine needles, 51.9% for pine branches, and 10.9% for pine cones. In particular, pine cones were more vulnerable to fire as compared to pine needles and pine branches because their moisture content was more than five times lower than that of pine needles and branches. The ignition time, which affects the speed of flame propagation, was the most rapid in March, and the fastest ignition time was for pine cones, at 19 seconds, followed by 34 seconds for pine needles, and 256 seconds for pine branches. The pine branches were the last to be ignited due to the effect of density, according to the thickness and specific gravity of the specimen. The peak heat release rate, which is a measurable index of fire intensity, was analyzed for pine cones and found to be 184.28 kW/m2 , while the mean effective heat of combustion was 19.79 MJ/kg, and the total heat release rate was 39.7 MJ/m2 , and these values were higher than those of pine branches and pine needles. Thus, we determined that the flame propagation speed and fire intensity according to the moisture content can be used to evaluate the risk of fire to the water tube section of pine trees. It is suggested that because of the combustion characteristics of the pine cone in March, that is when the forest is most vulnerable to fires.

  • The aim of this study is to produce cokes which can be used for the production of ferroalloy, for this purpose, domestic anthracite mixed with plastic was sintered at various condition. The combustion and physical properties of anthracite and plastic, coal separation, and the influence of factors on the strength of coke were investigated. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The three kinds of anthracite from the Samcheok region contained 25 to 30% ash of $100{\mu}m$ over size, and have the caloric value of 5,205 cal/g(TaeAn), 4,893 cal/g(JangSung), 4,873cal/g(KyongDong). 2. The recommendable conditions for heavy-fluid separation of the Samcheok coal are to set the specific gravity of heavy fluid to 2.4 and control the size of coal to $35{\sim}140mesh$. 3. It is concluded that phenolic resin powder, liquefied phenolic resin, SAN, and melamine resin can be used as a binder for the anthracite cokes, from the thermal analysis of various plastics. Especially, the liquefied phenolic resin was considered as the most suitable binder as it would simplify the process.

  • The automobile equipped with a gasoline engine uses the ignition coil, namely, a high voltage generator, to make the mixed fuel ignited and burned in the combustion chamber, which results in the power to drive the engine. The ignition coil functions to convert a low voltage of the primary into a hiか voltage of the secondary by switching method, which will be transmitted to the electrode. Here, if the ignition coil has a defect even a little, it cannot function well. In this study, it was chosen epoxy molding ignition coil in recently and epoxy resin which is insulation material as specimens, and it was measured the characteristics of the partial discharge occurring to the specimens when those were applied to a voltage, and thereby, it was researched and analyzed the distribution of phase angle, amount and count of discharge due to the changing voltage, And as the result is applying to the actual automobile ignition system, it can be expected the enhancement of the performance of the ignition coil and the reliability of the electrical equipment.

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites are used extensively in aerospace, marine, automotive, infrastructure, chemical processing and sporting good applications. A concern with using FRP composites in some engineering structures is their high flammability and poor fire resistance In this research, material properties of FRP composites at increasingly high temperatures was measured and verified. The obtained mechanical properties of FRP composites were performed according to ASTM D3039/D3039M and tested to a wide range of heat conditions with temperatures from Room-temp. to 300 for times up to 30 min. It is found that the mechanical properties of FRP composites dropped with increasing heat or temperature. The reduction to the properties was due mainly to thermal degradation and combustion of the polymer matrix.

  • Due to the complexity and large size of buildings, plastic resin is widely used as a building material. Accordingly, the occurrence of fires caused by plastics is increasing. Due to the nature of plastic resin fires, the amount of damage to properties and human life caused by combustion products such as smoke are large, and these damages are related to smoke production and smoke generation. Therefore, this study reviews smoke measurement methods and laws on domestic buildings and fire services. Experiments were conducted based on three smoke-related test standards (ISO 5660-1, ISO 12136, ASTM E 662). The experiment results indicate a total smoke production and generation by PP, PVC, and PMMA of 43.27, 32.83, and 12.33 ㎡, and 27.855, 9.599, and 6.975 g, respectively.

Fabrication and Characteristics of Epoxy Resin-Type Based Neutron Shielding Materials (에폭시수지계 중성자 차폐재 제조 및 특성)

  • New neutron shielding materials, KNS-201, KNS-301 and KNS-601 have been fabricated to be used for radioactive material shipping and storage cask. The base materials are a modified and a hydrogenated bisphenol- A type and novolac type epoxy resin, and aluminium hydroxide and boron carbide are added. These shielding materials offer good fluidity at processing, which makes it possible to form this resin shield into complicated geometric shapes such as radioactive material shipping and storage cask. Several measurements were made for the shielding materials to evaluate the thermal and mechanical properties and radiation resistance. The properties of the shielding materials are as follows: onset temperatures 2S7~28$0^{\circ}C$, thermal conductivities 0.9S~1.14W/m. K, thermal expansion coefficients 0.77~1.26x$10_{-6}{\circ}C_{-1}$, combustion characteristics < 80$0^{\circ}C$, ATB(average time of burning) < 5sec, AEB(average extent of burning) < 5mm, tensile strengths 2.5~3.2kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$, compressive strengths 13.2~1S.2kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$, flexural strengths 5.2 -6.4kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$. In general, the concerned properties of KNS-201, KNS-301 and KNS-601 were revealed to be better than those of NS-4- FR. foreign neutron shielding material. It is also observed that the radiation resistance of KNS- 601 was better than those of KNS-201 and KNS-301.

Ablative Mechanism of SiC Coated Carbon/carbon Composites with Ratio of Oxygen to Fuel at Combusion Test (연소시험에서 산소와 연료 비에 따른 탄화규소로 코팅된 탄소/ 탄소 복합재의 삭마 메커니즘)

  • Carbon/carbon (C/C) composites as unique materials possess exceptional thermal resistance with light weight, high stiffness, and strength even at high temperature. However, one serious obstacle for application of the C/C composites is their poor oxidation resistance in high temperature oxidizing environments. SiC coating has been employed to protect the composites from oxidation. This study explored combustion characteristics of 4-directional (4D) carbon/carbon composites using liquid fuel rocket engine to investigate ablative motion of the materials. C/C composites were made of coal tar pitch as a matrix precursor, and heat-treated at $2300^{\circ}C$. Throughout repeated densification process, the density of the material reached $1.903g/cm^3$. After machining 4D C/C composites, the nozzle surface was coated by a SiC layer by pack-cementation method to improve oxidation resistance. Erosion characteristics of SiC-coated C/C composites were measured as function of the ratio of oxygen to fuel. The morphological change of the composites after combustion test was investigated using SEM and erosion mechanism also was discussed.

A Study on the Preparation of Thermoplastic Powder Coating Material and Its Flame Retardancy (열가소성 분말 코팅소재 제조 및 난연특성 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is application to flame retardant powder coating(FRPC) material consisting of ammonium polyphosphate(APP) and magnesium hydroxide($Mg(OH)_2$) as a halogen free flame retardant into thermoplastic resin(LDPE-g-MAH). For improvement of adhesion, LDPE-g-MAH was synthesized from low density polyethylene(LDPE) and maleic anhydride(MAH). The mechanical properties as melt flow index, pencil hardness, cross-hatch adhesion and impact resistance of FRPC were measured. Also, the limited oxygen index(LOI) values were measured 17.3vol%, 31.1vol% and 33.7vol% for LDPE-g-MAH, FRPC-3(APP 15wt%, $Mg(OH)_2$ 15wt%) and FRPC-5(APP 30 wt%), respectively. The thermo gravimetry/differential thermal analysis(TG/DTA) of FPRC-3 was observed endothermic peak at $340^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$, it was confirmed predominant thermal stability though the wide temperature range by APP and $Mg(OH)_2$. It was showed V-0 grade for FRPC-3 and FRPC-4(APP 20wt%, $Mg(OH)_2$ 10wt%) that a char formation and drip suppressing effect, and combustion time reduced by UL94(vertical burning test). It was confirmed that flame retardancy was improved with the synergy effect because of char formation by APP and $Mg(OH)_2$.

  • A porous tube, comprised of a resin-coated woven fabric has recently been used as an effective component for use in intake systems of internal combustion engines to reduce the intake roaring. For the prediction of the acoustic performance of an engine intake system with a porous woven hose, the acoustic wall impedance of the hose must be known. Because of its peculiar acoustical and structural characteristics, the accurate measurement of the wall impedance ofa porous woven hose is not easy. A new measurement technique is proposed herein, that is valid over the low to mid frequency ranges. The acoustics impedance is inversely estimated from an overdetermined set of measured pressure transmission coefficients for specimens of different lengths and the reflection coefficient of end termination. The method involves only one measurement, and, as a result, it is very simple. The measured TL for samples with arbitrary conditions, arbitrary porous frequency, arbitrary length, and arbitrary mean flow condition, are in reasonably good agreement with values predicted from curve-fitted impedance data.

Evaluation of the Activation Energy of Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride (CPVC) Using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA를 이용한 Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride(CPVC)의 활성화 에너지 평가)

  • The activation energy of CPVC (Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride) used for non-metallic synthetic resin piping in fire-fighting was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The activation energy was determined using by TGA kinetic methods, such as Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method. The calculated activation energy was 128.07 kJ/mol (Kissinger method) and 145.60 kJ/mol (Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method). The difference in activation energies calculated by the Kissinger method and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method was not considered to be significant considering that the different analysis methods. The combustion characteristics will be tested in a future study through an evaluation of thermal deterioration using an accelerated deterioration and air oven aging test and the lifetime of CPVC will be predicted.
