In the trackbed design using elastic multi-layer model, the stress-dependent resilient modulus is an important input parameter, which reflects substructure performance under repeated traffic loading. The resilient moduli of crushed stone and weathered granite soil were developed using nonlinear dynamic stiffness, which can be measured by in-situ and laboratory seismic tests. The prediction models of resilient modulus varying with the deviatoric or bulk stress were proposed (Park et al., 2008). To investigate the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of the test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of the test sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 1mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation. The prediction models proposed for resilient modulus were verified by the comparison of the calculated vertical displacements with measured ones during train passages.
In the mechanistic-empirical trackbed design of railways, the resilient modulus is the key input parameter. This study focused on the resilient modulus prediction model, which is the functions of mean effective principal stress and axial strain, for three types of railroad trackbed materials such as crushed stone, weathered soil, and crushed-rock soil mixture. The model is composed with the maximum Young's modulus and nonlinear values for higher strain in parallel with dynamic shear modulus. The maximum values is modeled by model parameters, $A_E$ and the power of mean effective principal stress, $n_E$. The nonlinear portion is represented by modified hyperbolic model, with the model parameters of reference strain, ${\varepsilon}_r$ and curvature coefficient, a. Reinforced-Roadbed materials are usually composed of crushed stones. Repeated load application can induce deformation in the reinforced-roadbed layer so that it causes irregularity of track. Thus it is important to develop a prediction model of elastic modulus based on stress-strain relation under repeatitive load in order to investigate behavior of reinforced roadbed. The prediction model of elastic modulus of the material can be obtained from repeated triaxial test. However, a proper size of the sample for the test must be used. In this study, a large repeatitive triaxial test apparatus with the sample size of diameter of 30 cm and height of 60cm was adapted for performing test of the crushed stone reinforced-roadbed considering large particle size to get resilient modulus Mr. The obtained resilient modulus was compared to shear modulus obtained from mid size resonant column test. The sample size effect is somewhat large enough so that it is required to design a scale factor based on similarity law in order to use smaller samples for getting elastic modulus of the crushed stone reinforced-roadbed material. A scale factor could be obtained from this study.
Many models have been used to represent the effects of confining stress, bulk stress, and shear stress on the value of the resilient modulus (Mr). This study was conducted to estimate Mr of the recycled materials such as recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) through the repeated load cyclic test. Also, two models were applied to estimation of Mr for comparing between measured Mr values and predicted Mr values. The first model (A-model) can provide a quick and easy estimation of the Mr based on the bulk stress, while the second model (N-model) includes not only the bulk stress but also the shear stress. Statistical analysis indicated that all results using the both of models are significant at a 95 % confidence level. Therefore, the both of models could be used as an effective prediction model of Mr for RCA and RAP. Especially, the Model 2 including the parameters of the bulk stress and the shear stress could give more reliable estimation at the high range of Mr values.
A method was developed to determine resilient modulus for crushed rock-soil mixtures whose usage has been increased recently without engineering specifications. The method is based on the subtle different modulus called nonlinear dynamic modulus and was lately implemented in residual soils and engineered crushed-stones. Hereby. the same method was expanded to crushed rock-soil mixtures containing as large grain diameter as 300mm. The method utilize field direct-arival tests for the determination of maximum Young's modulus, and a large scale free-free resonant column test, which is recently developed to is capable to test as large grain diameter as 25mm, for modulus reduction curves. The prediction model of resilient modulus was evaluated for crushed rock-soil mixtures of a highway construction site at Gimcheon, Korea.
