It is well known that during the oxygen cutting process residual thermal stresses are produced in weldment. The local non-uniform heating and subsequent cooling which takes place during any welding process causes complex thermal strains and stresses to finally lead to residual stresses exceed to the yield stress. High tensile stresses combined with applied structural load in the region near the welded joint can given rise to distortion brittle fracture change of the fatigue strength and stress corrosion cracking. The appropriate treatment of the welded component which reduces the peak of he welding residual stresses is believed to lower risk of the fracture during the service of the structure. In this study the impact loading in oxygen cutting frame was applied to reduce the residual stress. After applying the impact loading redistribution of resid-ual stress was measured by cutting method and the effect of fatigue was tested.

Distribution of welding residual stresses are mainly characterized by degrees and frequencies of thermal loads applied to materials. However, other effects as component size and clamping condition can also affect stress distributions to a certain extent thus careful manipulation of these parameters based on clear understanding of how they affect residual stresses distributions and why can be additional measure to mitigate residual stresses. This paper discusses aforementioned issues for the case of safety and relief nozzle in nuclear power plant through finite element analysis.
The buckling strength, fatigue strength, stress corrosion cracking are considerably effected on one of initial imperfections, the residual stresses produced by a circumferential weld between axisymmetric cylinders. Therefore, we study the residual stresses, plastic strain and temperature distribution with using thermal elasto-plastic analysis which are generated by a circumferential weld between axisymmetric cylinders. It is investigated that welding residual stresses have an effect on the strength of cylinder for inner and outer shell under external pressure.

One of the main causes of unwanted dimensional changes in precision metal mold casting parts is excessive and irregular residual stresses induced by temperature gradients and plastic deformation in the solidifying shell. Residual stresses can also cause stress cracking, and lower the fatigue life and fracture strength of the casting parts. In the present study, aluminum alloy casting system with metal mold equipped with electrical heating elements and water cooling units was designed and the casting specimens were produced to quantify the effects of different cooling conditions on the development of residual stresses. The layer removal method was used to measure the biaxial residual stresses in casting specimens produced from the experiments. The experimental results agreed with Tien-Richmond's theoretical model for thermal stress development for the solidifying metal plate.
In this study, the residual stress fields of multi-pass welded were analyzed by FEA under various geometrical conditions. In order to estimate the effects of pipe geometries on residual stress distribution, welding processes of each model were performed under the same heat cycles. And then, the influence of cutting off the weld bead on the residual stress redistribution was also estimated. From the results, in the range of t/D=0.05, axial residual stresses on the outer surface of the welded pipe were linearly decreased with pipe diameter increase. On the other hand, hoop residual stresses were not influenced by them. And both axial and hoop residual stresses on the outer surface of the welded pipe were increased with pipe diameter increase. But, when t/D was smaller than 0.05, they were converged in the nearly same value. The maximum residual stresses were generated at around HAZ. It in therefore necessary to consider them in welding design, strength evaluation, and analysis of fracture characteristics.

Reliability problem in inkjet printhead, one of MEMS devices, is also very important. To eject an ink drop, the temperature of heater must be high so that ink contacting with surface reaches above $280^{o}C$ on the instant. Its heater is embedded in the thin multi-layer in which several materials are deposited. MEMS processes are the main sources of residual stresses development. Residual stress is one of the factors reducing the reliability of MEMS devices. We measured residual stresses of single layers that consist of multilayer. FE analysis is performed using design of experiment(DOE). Transient analysis for heat transfer is performed to get a temperature distribution. And then static analysis is performed with the temperature distribution obtained by heat transfer analysis and the measured residual stresses to get a stress distribution in the structure. Although the residual stress is bigger than thermal stress, thermal stress is more influential on fatigue life.

In order to achieve effective prediction of residual stresses, the series experiment were carried out and the residual stresses were measured using the backgpropagation algorithm from the neural network and the sectional method. Using the experimental results, the optimal control algorithms using a neural network should be developed in order to reduce the effect of the external disturbances on residual stresses during GMA welding processes. The results obtained from the comparison between the measured and calculated results, showed that the neural network based on backpropagation algorithm can be sued in order to control weld quality. This system can not only help to understand the interaction between the process parameters and residual stress, but also, improve the quantity control for welded structures. The development of the system is goal in this study.

Up to now, many crack repair techniques have been developed for inhibiting crack growth in structural components. However, the simplest way for inhibiting crack growth is to apply a indentation at the crack tip or at some distance ahead of the expected crack growth path so as to produce residual compressive stresses that can reduce the effective stresses around the crack tip. In spite of its importance to the aerospace industry, little attention has been devoted to evaluation of the indentation residual stress effect on the fatigue crack initiation life quantitatively. Therefore, in the present work, the magnitude and distribution of the indentation residual stresses were investigated in order to estimate the beneficial effect on fatigue crack initiation by using finite element method. Furthermore, to examine the validity of finite element analysis results, residual stress distribution in the indented specimen was measured by using X-ray diffraction technique, and fatigue crack behavior at fastener hole in aluminum alloy 7075-T6 before and after indentation processes was investigated.
During the laser welding, weldments are suddenly heated and cooled by laser beam of high density energy. This phenomenon gives an occasion to complex welding residual stresses, which have a great influence on structural instability, in laser welds. However, relevant researches on this field are not sufficient until now and residual stress measurements have experimental and practical limitations. From these reasons, a numerical simulation may be attractive in order to solve the residual stress problem. For clarifying the distribution of heat and welding residual stresses in laser welds with the nail-head shape, authors conduct the finite element analysis (two-dimensional unstationary heat conduction & thermal elastic and plastic analysis). From the results, we can confirm the stress concentration occurs at the place of melting line shape changed in laser welds with the nail-head shape.

The packaging of the integrated circuits requires knowledge of ceramics and metals to accommodate the fabrication of modules that are used to construct subsystems and entire systems from extremely small components. Composite ceramics ($Al_2O_3-SiO_2$) were tested for substrates. A stress analysis was conducted for a linear work-hardening metal cylinder embedded in an infinite ceramic matrix. The bond between the metal and ceramic was established at high temperature and stresses developed during cooling to room temperature. The calculations showed that the stresses depend on the mismatch in thermal expansion, the elastic properties, and the yield strength and work hardening rate of the metal. Experimental measurements of the surface stresses have also been made on a $Cu/Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ ceramic system, using an indentation technique. A comparison revealed that the calculated stresses were appreciably larger than the measured surface stresses, indicating an important difference between the bulk and surface residual stresses. However, it was also shown that porosity in the metal could plastically expand and permit substantial dilatational relaxation of the residual stresses. Conversely it was noted that pore clusters were capable of initiating ductile rupture, by means of a plastic instability, in the presence of appreciable tri-axiality. The role of ceramics for packaging of microelectronics will continue to be extremely challenging.
