Fatigue crack propagation life of weld toe crack through residual stress field was estimated with Elber's crack concept. Propagation of weld toe crack is heavily influenced by residual stress caused by welding process, so it is essential to take into account the effect of residual stress on the propagation life of weld toe crack. Fatigue crack at transverse and longitudinal weld toe was studied respectively, which represent typical weld joint in ship structure. Numerical and experimental studies are performed for both cases. Residual stress near weldment was estimated through nonlinear thermo-elasto-plastic finite element method, and residual stress intensity factor with Glinka's weight function method. Effective stress intensity factor was calculated with Newman-Forman-de Koning-Henriksen equation which is based on Dugdale strip yield model in estimating crack closure level U at different stress ratio. Calculated crack propagation life coincided well with experimental results.

This paper presents the probabilistic analysis for fatigue life of Glass/Epoxy laminates with impact-induced damage. For this, a series of impact tests were perfomed on the Glass/Epoxy laminates using instrumented impact testing machine. Then, tensile and fatigue tests carried out so as to generate post-impact residual strength and fatigue life. Two Parameter Weibull distribution was used to fit the residual strength and fatigue life data of Glass/Epoxy composite laminates. The residual strength was affected by impact energy and their variance decreased with increasing of impact energy. The fatigue life of impacted laminates was greatly reduced by impact energy and this trend depended on applied stress amplitude. Additionally, the variation of fatigue life was gradually decreased with the applied stress amplitude.

An evaluation of fatigue life of welded components is complicated due to various geometrically complex welding details and stress raisers in vicinity of weld beads, ego under cuts, overlaps and blow holes. These factors have a considerable influence on the fatigue strength of welded joints, as well as the welding residual stress which is relaxed depending on the distribution of local stress at the front of the stress raisers. To reasonably evaluate fatigue life, the effect of geometries and welding residual stress should be taken into account. The several methods based on the notch strain approach have been proposed in order to accomplish this. These methods, however, result in differences between analytical and experimental results due to discrepancies in estimated amount of relaxed welding residual stress present. In this paper, an approach that involves the use of a modified notch strain approach considering geometrical effects and a residual stress relaxation model based on experimental results was proposed. The fatigue life for five types of representative welding details, ego cruciform, cover plate, longitudinal stiffener, gusset and side attachment joint, are evaluated using this method.
The influence of the fatigue crack propagation by shot peening was studied in this paper. Fatigue tests were carried out on the unpeened and shot peened CT specimens. The changes of mechanical properties, residual stress, fatigue fracture surface etc. by shot peening were investigated. The mechanical properties, residual stress, fatigue surface etc. by shot peening were investigated. The mechanical peened specimen improved in fatigue life up to 14% by shot peening. The reason of increase in the fatigue life was closely related with the compressive residual stress, which was 519.7MPa on surface. Another reason was the constraint on crack opening on surface region, it is due to the decrease in slope of crack propagation direction.

Nowadays, many components used in machinery industry is required lightness and high strength. Therefore, the effects of compressive residual stress by shot-peening which is method to improve fatigue lift of spring steel (JISG SUP-9), which used in suspension of automobile, on fatigue crack growth characteristics was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings 1. The fatigue crack growth rate on stage II is conspicuous with the size of compressive residual stress and is dependent on Paris equation. 2. Although the maximum compressive residual stress is deeply and widely formed from surface, fatigue life does not improve than when maximum compressive residual stress is formed in surface. 3. The threshold stress intensity factor range is increased with increasing compressive residual stress. 4. In fracture surface of fatigue crack growth it is investigated that compressive residual stress remarkably retards fatigue crack growth.

Estimation of fatigue strength on the spot welded joint is very Important for strength design of spot welded steed sheet structures. In this paper, the effect of residual stress on the fatigue life of resistance spot weldment was studied. Residual stress fields of weldment were calculated by using thermo elastic plastic finite element analysis and equivalent fatigue stress considering residual stress effect was obtained. And then we predicted fatigue life, which included the effect of the residual stresses and the actual loading stresses. The calculation and experimental results were in good agreement. Therefore, the proposed calculated model can be considered to be sufficiently powerful for the prediction of fatigue life.

Reliability problem in inkjet printhead, one of MEMS devices, is also very important. To eject an ink drop, the temperature of heater must be high so that ink contacting with surface reaches above $280^{o}C$ on the instant. Its heater is embedded in the thin multi-layer in which several materials are deposited. MEMS processes are the main sources of residual stresses development. Residual stress is one of the factors reducing the reliability of MEMS devices. We measured residual stresses of single layers that consist of multilayer. FE analysis is performed using design of experiment(DOE). Transient analysis for heat transfer is performed to get a temperature distribution. And then static analysis is performed with the temperature distribution obtained by heat transfer analysis and the measured residual stresses to get a stress distribution in the structure. Although the residual stress is bigger than thermal stress, thermal stress is more influential on fatigue life.

In this study, to investigate the effects of 2-step shot peening at the surface of spring steel, tests are conducted on spring steel and shot peened specimens. Various tests are accomplished to evaluate mechanical properties influenced by shot peening process, and fatigue tests are also performed to evaluate the improvement of fatigue strength. And then the residual stresses are examined. The mechanical properties of material did not change so much by shot peening. However, the fatigue strength of notched specimen remarkably increased. In the case of 1-step shot peening, fatigue strength increased by about 20% than unpeened specimen. Especially, in the case of 2-step shot peening, fatigue strength increased by about 40%, because the residual compressive stress at surface was higher than that of 1-step shot peened specimen. The fatigue strength and life are closely related to the value and position of maximum compressive residual stress by shot peening.

The fatigue life of a structure can be enhanced by improving the mechanical and metallurgical aspects to strengthen the material around regions of high stress. Coldworking of holes in structures is one of the mechanical methods of strengthening material. The material for this research is A12024-T351 which is used for the primary member or aircraft. Specimens were tested under constant amplitude loading and residual stresses measured by X-ray diffraction technique. Fatigue crack initiation life was evaluated by a strain-life equation which was considered initial residual stress and residual stress relaxation exponent as a function of the strain amplitude. The predictions on fatigue crack initiation life were compared with experimental results. A wide range of discrepancies between them was found.

Authors had developed the model for the fatigue life assessment of welded details considering residual stress and its relaxation. The model consists of three ingredients; a hot-spot stress approach, a residual stress relaxation, and an equivalent stress. The equivalent stress is induced by stress ranges and the ratios between the applied mean stresses and the ultimate stress of material. Once being tuned with two specific fatigue tests by using load carrying cruciform joint, this model can be applied to many kinds of welded details which structural stress concentration factors are different from each other. This paper reports the application of the proposed model for various welded details including cover plate, longitudinal stiffener, gusset and side attachment. From the investigation of predicted results by using the proposed model it was shown that the ambiguous fatigue characteristics of the various details influenced widely by the welding residual stress are clarified, and also the model could be applied to assess fatigue life of general welded structures.
